    I've been a Cold Steel fan since they opened for business. Their 5.5" Recon 1 Tanto folder saved my life versus an aggressive Pitbull random attack. I used my CS diver knife to ward off a 6-foot shark when I was diving in the Caribbean. Not just for the money, but for everyday use. They are not perfect. I don't know of any production knife, NOR, a custom knife that is perfect. All I can tell you is that in 39 years, Cold Steel has NEVER failed me.

    I own a few Benchmade knives from way back to 1980. I've had good luck with them, and they are still working today. However, my Cold Steel knives are simply beyond reproach, with the exception of one of their Dragonfly Swords. It was an out of the box sharpness issue. Other than that, I find Cold Steel the biggest bang for the buck: materials, fit/finish, durability, presence, and the ability to do the job they were designed to do. Further, Cold Steel's customer service is wonderful, and they really do stand behind their products. Thanks very much for your time and excellent demonstration.

    Well Done Andrew! One thing I might like to see on the next test for example testing the lock from a horizontal angle with the knife suspended flat. It doesn't compare well to the stresses under utility but no one wants to have a knife break off in a rib cage. Thanks!

    It kinda kills me from the inside to see knives get tortured like that, but on the other hand I'm happy that these are tests which the manufacturers can learn from and improve their knives.

    I wish cold steel would pay the extra ten bucks to use the legit Emerson opener. It's so much nicer than their version. That stupid little lip that doesn't always catch and doesn't open as smooth. Also, the legit Emerson opener doesn't shred your pocket.

    I am still fuming over Benchmade forcing dealers to sell at nearly retail prices. This is one company you have my blessing to humiliate, Andrew.
    The 4 inch PE Talwar (AUS8) is at Knifehog for $47.99. Shipping is usually free. Merry Christmas!

      They are probably going to win over new/younger knife consumers. These will be good for people on a budget. The more experienced folks know that knives this strong are not really necessary for 95% of knife owners.

      Same, they are trying to be high class. Makes no sense because their bread and butter is black and blue line. Also, Bedlam is a failure of a design so feel free to knock Benchmade on this one!

    • @MrGnarman
      @MrGnarman 9 лет назад

      +EvilBillRoasts the only problem with that theory is that when spyderco and benchmade charge such high prices, it's because of differentiation of designs, and blade steels, and many other factors. recon: aus8a and g10, american lawman: aus8a and g10, ak47: aus8a and code 4: g10, aus8a and aluminum handles, espada: aus8a and g10... yes, I know they're starting to use xhp, but still... that's 2 steel varieties unless you count the kudu and other knives that are more keychain style than anything else. spyderco: zdp189, s30v, s90v, 8cr13mov, 154cm, vg10, h1, 440c, aus8, aus6, aus10, ats-34, ats-55, s35vn, s110v, elmax, xhp, damascus, etc... benchmade: 154cm, d2, s30v, s90v, 440c, damascus, m390, n680, etc... you pay more for higher end steels, hence the reason why the cold steel xhp blades will be more expensive than their aus8a offerings.

    Great test. Fair. I have noticed that on some Axis locks, if the lock bar doesn't come up on the blade tang far enough it will unlock like this. I had an 805 TSEK that would do that and I had to send it back to BM. They fixed it and it worked great after that. Great vid though.

  • @gromann
    @gromann 9 лет назад +2

    The triad is a stunner, but a lockback has inherit advantages. Makes liner locks a joke, anyway. I just wish CS had some better looking knives. I have a couple BM knives, but only one Cold Steel. I definitely trust the lock on the CS incase my life depended on it, but my BM Barrage just proves so much more useful and pleasing to use.
    I'd love some more practical (non tacticool) knives from Cold.

    there is no question that cold steel as the strongest lock but I'm trying to imagine in what real world scenario would I need to subject my knife to that kind of extreme test ??? the only way that I see is to put on a stick to make a spear! but there is so much more than lock strength when you buy a knife like look, feel, how it open and close and so much more it all come down to personal preference ;)

      clap5 I'm not surprised as I've never considered it the strongest of all locks out there (take a benchmade apart and you see how it could fail). The way the axis moves is its downfall when it comes to that spin test. I'm more surprised that it's single pin+liner lock held 400 fucking pounds.

    • @Chineseknives
      @Chineseknives 7 лет назад

      Impressive the axis lock with more than 400 pounds. Anyway, i have no doubts than tri-ad lock is the stronger lock system in the world.

    Prices given here have changed dramatically. The Talwar is $107, and the Bedlam is $146 (Advantage Talwar). Talwar made in Taiwan, and Bedlam is made in USA(Advantage Bedlam).Bedlam AXIS advantage over lockback on Talwar. Handle grip advantage Bedlam (close call). Bedlam advantage opening stud vs clip for Talwar. The steels are roughly even, although I have never used CTS-HXP. I have the Bedlam, and it is a beast. The tip of the blade is a stabbing dream. The handle is large, but it has a pronounced front and rear quillion, as does the Talwar. The blade came very sharp.

    Before I say anything I want to say I like Cold steel they have a great product for the money, not downing or bashing them in any way.
    I would like to see you test the Benchmade Adamas with one of your knives in the same class, the Adamas is stronger then the Bedlam or a lot of other Benchmade folding knives.
    For me out of all the knives I have carried, I like Benchmade more because it's strong and easy to close with one hand, While Clod steel can be quite a bugger to close with one hand an not cut yourself (for me at least). some other knives I think would give cold steel a run for their money is as follows, Benchmade Sibert, LionSteel SR1-Ti V Titanium Folding Knife, Zero Tolerance Hinderer 0561 or 0560.
    P.S is that a 1911 he is Carrying?

    Why block of the shop view? I thought it looked cool. The double weight hang was a good idea, more efficient for video sake.
    It would be nice to have a side profile view to see the knife handles bending and stressing while the weight is being dropped. From this rear view, you cant really tell the severity of sag.

  • @seanmartin7962

    Yes, the Triad wins but take into consideration deployment. Owning both a Bedlam 860 BC and a Cold Steel Spartan, I could easily tell the cold steel was stronger but it was very hard to close and often gave me blisters. The steel line was small and gave me trouble gaining leverage and sores on my thumb. I did get better at deployment but it is still no walk in the park. The Axis was much better than I expected, I could open and close the knife within 3 seconds with no pain. It's one of the easiest, fastest, and most reliable lock I have ever seen. So if you like toughness, reliability, at a cost of some pain, go for the Cold steel. If you like swiftness, speed and ease, go for the benchmade. These are just my opinions, thank you for reading

    Hold on. On the weight test, the second one, they start off by putting the Bedlam on the right. But when the left-most knife breaks at the end, they declare that one the Bedlam knife.
    EDIT: No, I was wrong. At 7:23 he does change the position of the knives. Thank you +csknives for clearing that up.

    • @cet1217

      Chester Taylor ***** Can you comment on this? At 6:50 the gentlemen lays down a knife on the right side of the frame and says, "this is the brand new Bedlam..." but then at 19:40 when the left-most knife breaks both men and the on-screen text declare the Bedlam had catastrophic failure. Unless I am missing something, and I've watched this 5 times over now, the CS Talwar is the knife that failed the weight test.
      Note: commented to my own reply to offer more information.
      EDIT: See above, I was wrong, at 7:23 he does change the position of the knives.

Sure, you call them the mall ninja guys. But, you CAN NOT call them the mall ninja quality guys. They're producing quality products with quality materials. Mall ninja is a term that is associated with shitty quality products. You know, swords that break when you swing them at a pillow. That's the last thing cold steel makes.

Though i EDC a cold steel voyager medium i also EDC a ka-bar Dozier Design 4065, I had this knife since i was a teen and i abused the this knife quite a bit and holds up fine even to my amateur resharpening. I've accidentally machine washed and dried this knife like 4 times because its so light and thin that i forget about it or dont notice it was still clipped onto my pants. I got this knife for about 12-15 dollars back then i think it runs about 20 dollars now. the knife is 2.2 ounces and i think its Aus 8 steel that's a lock back design and no liners. I'd like to see one affordable lightweight Vs another of two companies i highly reconmend

I picked up one on a whim from a guy on ebay who had a buy it now for a used CS XL clip Voyager and a Victorinox Trekker for 40 bucks... I got it because i kind of wanted the Trekker.... Turns out the XL Voyager replaced my Fixed Blade as my Outdoors EDC... Anytime i head out to go fishing, camping, hiking, or Mountain Biking that XL Clip Voyager comes with me... When open and held with your hand at the rear of the handle it actually has the same reach and chopping ability as my Kabar USMC knife... Yes, im not joking... It was so capable that i went and purchased a brand new Recon XL Clip for 89.00 shipped to my door... IMO the Recon XL is the most capable Combat/Tactical/Survival Folder ever made my any manufacturer....

  • @Savage.Doomer
    @Savage.Doomer 8 лет назад +6

    Weight has nothing to do with it, you were just going to use that as an excuse if the cold steel lost. You also keep talking about not having steel liners, it is the lock strength you are testing so the liners have nothing to do with it. Sure the cold steel is stronger, but strength is not the only reason to pick a knife.

    • @nathan_navaja
      @nathan_navaja 8 лет назад +5

      Corpse Grinder Heavier knives are usually stronger than lighter knives, because they have more material to take the brunt of the force. The point Andrew is proving is that a supposedly weaker, lighter knife can perform way outside of its weight class capabilities. Why? By design, the lock itself is taking more of the force, not the handle. Proving a superior strength/weight ratio.

    • @TheStratman007
      @TheStratman007 7 лет назад

      The liners are added for weight, which I particular like, and also for scale reinforcement. The lock may hold, but perhaps the handle (scales) may collapse. There are a plethora of knives from which to choose whichever one is best for them. After all, the best knife on the planet is the one "you" like the most.

    • @ianchen9449
      @ianchen9449 7 лет назад

      steel liner does make a difference. if you take a look at different lock tests, a lot of the time the failure mode is through linear deformation. In this case tho steel liner would actually negatively influence the result as frp has higher shear resistance than steel.

    I have tested the Bedlam with a spine tap 20 times with no failure. I would suggest that this test here may prove which knife passes this test, but the test has no relation to the lock performing during a self defense scenario. Beyond self defense, I have no idea when such a test would be relevant or even prudent. I have been in a self defense encounter, and I have had a knife lock fail. I always check the lock carefully now before I buy one. It probably is time to upgrade your tests like it is the prices given here. Nearly 5 years have passed, I understand.

    I know this is an obscure one, but what about comparing the Aus 8A 4" aluminum Ti-Lite to the Smith & Wesson (actually made by Taylor Brands, which includes Schrade, Old Timer, and Uncle Henry) Black Ops series of folders? I'm asking because I've had the serrated drop-point tanto model (SWBLOP3TS) for many years (okay, I bought it at a store and didn't know much about knives back then), and it hasn't failed me (I've done a lot of spine whacks and stabbed many things with it). It seems to have a decent liner lock, compared to other brands' liner locks. I am not sure how good the quality control, and thus consistency is, or if any of the newer Smith & Wesson branded liner lock folders have the same liner lock. I have never seen it tested, but I know that similar models are fairly popular at Knife Depot. Most similar models have a secondary safety, which through an unknown mechanism prevents the blade from closing even when the liner lock is depressed. Needless to say, I carry a Voyager now, but I would like to see if any company, especially a lesser known company, produces a halfway decent liner lock comparable to Cold Steel's.

      ***** Obviously he is English-challenged, but I have no trouble understanding his question. He wants to know why you left the weight hanging on the Bedlam for longer than you left it hanging on the Talwar. Not too hard to understand that at all, if you want to understand it.

    • @donavan1021
      @donavan1021 9 лет назад +1

      ***** I don't think it even makes much a difference honestly, but you said you don't understand why he would think that, but you can clearly see it in the video. I certainly don't think CS was doing it on purpose. I have no need to redo the tests anyway, the test has shown what it has shown. The Tri-ad lock can resist more force before it fails than any other lock out there. The question is, does it matter? Is anyone gonna actually use this much power on their knife? Is it more important than ease of deployment, blade steel, handle ergonomics, ect ect? I don't think so. CS doesn't really sacrifice any of these, especially after finally upgrading from AUS8, and generally makes good knives.

    • @donavan1021
      @donavan1021 9 лет назад

      I'm not saying it isn't important, but I honestly don't think a blade will ever be exposed to that much stress in real use. And also, even if it was possible, I still would never consider that more important than blade steel, design, ease of opening (on which the axis lock is superior imo), ect. And also, if you needed that much lock strength, why wouldn't you just carry a fixed blade?

    I actually commented before I finished watching the video, but wow, that was the "fight" yet, with the weight hang at least.. I'm curious though, as I couldn't tell from watching.. were the Benchmades still working after each failure? I mean did the lock fail by "slipping" out of place on both tests, but afterwards still opened and closed alright? Also thanks for all the tests, they're very fun to watch. I will surely pick up a 2015 version Cold Steel sometime with the new steel and dlc coatings, so glad you guy finally upgraded those, they were the two things that keps me from truly loving Cold Steels' folders :)
    BTW, I seriously envy your shop.. ya got a Hardcore Maximizer in the background and a KMG horizonal etc etc etc. (at least in the other vids). So, it's "handpicked" to compare two one-hand opening/closing knives? It's only fair if a one-hand opening/closing Cold Steel is compared to the slow, two-hand manipulated RAO/RAO II? As for Quartermaster, that would be a good laugh. It doesn't look to me like they've even held a real knife before, much less learned how to build one. But, maybe, just by chance, they make a better framelock than any other knife company, even if their QTR series looks like they took a band saw to real knife handles.

    • @roberthill7885
      @roberthill7885 9 лет назад

      Andrew Tadsen Cold Steel - "comparing knives of similar size, weight, price or materials". Don't take it so personally Mr Tadsen. I'm just suggesting there are many other knives within the scope that CS suggested that would be suitable for these tests. The Vs tests seem to me to be from a small range of mainly US made knives, that could be "handpicked" for particular weaknesses they may have. I'm not suggesting any winner or loser, just that based on CS's own remit, there are other knives that CS could go up against and would make interesting tests. My Rao II opens very easily with one hand, as does my Nemisis and there are other ER knives (and not just ER), that fall within the CS remit. Just because you personally don't like the appearance of a particular knife, doesn't make it unsuitable for any test either. I'm pretty sure the people at Quartermaster have actually held a knife before.

    • @andrew-ripley1747
      @andrew-ripley1747 9 лет назад

      Robert Hill
      So you want to test the RAO without the pin in place? In that case, the test could be considered "fair", comparing similar knives, but I assumed that since you mentioned the RAO in particular that the idea was to test the Tri-Ad lock vs. the RAO with the pin inserted. Does the RAO have a legitimate claim to strength without the pin?

      Did Cold Steel replace it? Sounds like either the blade steel or the handle failed...not the lock mechanism. Also, remember, the KUDU is a $10.00 knife.
      I have 3 KUDUS and 3 ELANDS. I use them to trim brush, in the kitchen, and I have even filleted fish with them, with no troubles at all.
      I am not going to ask why you were stabbing a tire. but If I were going to do something like that, I would use something with a stronger point, like a Ti-Lite or a Tanto Voyager. Tires have steel belts in them.
