  • Bought this 2019 dolly and couldn't go over 45mph without a bad sway..
I fixed it with a ratchet strap.
I also added a 3500lbs winch and safety chains.

Thank you for your video. After dropping off a car 80 miles away on my way back, my dolly was swaying like a dog's tail. I pulled on the side of the freeway and applied your method, and no more swaying very helpful video

Good info. The user manual suggests another way. 5. Check that nuts and bolts securing tongue and tongue support bars are properly tightened.
(Proper tightness of support bar nuts and bolts are achieved when loading ramps stay in upright
position when tilt pin is removed). Tighten the front nut and bolt going through the tongue
securing support bars at the front, and the nut and bolt at the rear of each bar attaching it to
the axle as necessary. If these bolts are not kept tight a swaying condition during tow will result. To lower loading ramps simply step onto the rear of one of the ramps and both will
    lower to the ground.

I had this same issue & this helped a little but still had a ton of sway. Turns out my truck sat too high & my 3" drop wasn't enough. I bought a 6" drop & it pulls perfect now

Great advice. I would like to add that the correct ball height is important too! I lost my master pin on my first trip... didn't realize it until I got to my destination 1,000 miles. Tray never flipped back under weight of car the whole time. I now use a bolt with locking aviation nut.

In the location where your pin is for the tilt action .... my dolly had a lot of slop there -- l put in a 4"-5" heavy duty grade 8 ⅝ or ¾" (?) diameter bolt , tighten it up till the slop was gone .

Mine has a clamp with a set bolt to tighten on the tongue so as to take up the slack and stop the swaying. It stops it too.
Until the last time I went out to look at a car and on the way it started swaying again until hitting a bump and it would stop for a while. Glad the deal fell through on the car, because when I got almost home I stopped and took a close look at what could be causing the sway to stop at times when hitting a bump and found the axle cracked all the way through and the left tire leaning like a mother. Time for another tow dolly I suppose.

Once had a trucker tell me to load a pick up truck backwards .... very bad idea, took both lanes to get it stopped with out rolling both vehicles. Heavy end goes on the dolley .
Also tire pressure in the towed vehicle can cause amplified sway.

I've did it for 1400 miles no problem. You have to lock the steering wheel & ratchet strap the steering wheel on both sides so there's no chance of it moving. Of course, no speeding.

      @Patrick-c8x 3 года назад

Correct , I car dollied my 78' Trans Am loaded backwards -- swayed like a sumbitch past 45mph. Reason for doing that ... I didn't wanna disconnect the driveshaft. I agree , heavy end on the dolly --

Also...Let the tire pressure down to 20-25 psi when traveling empty. I take a portable air tank to get the pressure back to 45-50 psi, once the car is loaded. Otherwise the dolly dribbles down a rough road like a basketball.

So I also have the master tow dolly and it has this sway problem only when we don’t have a car on it. I tried this strap fix and it did not work for me it still swayed. Which makes it hard to move. I recently had someone tell me it could be a bearing problem? Any other fix I can do?

    • @Kartastrophic

You can try and remove the caps on the end of the axle or the hub. The nut holding the hub on could need to be tightened up.

Thinking of moving to Mexico 🇲🇽 with one. I want to tow a 2013 Chevrolet Impala with a 2016 Buick Envision. I understand that I am way over the tow limit. Tow rating is 1500 pounds with 200 pound tongue weight. Trailer brakes required after 1000 pounds. That part is easy. I can tow 3500 pounds in the future with 350 pound tongue weight. I think that will be easy. However, beyond 3500 pounds might be dangerous, especially if the tongue weight is beyond 350 pounds. 4100 pounds should be okay if tongue weight is 350 pounds or less.
