When I sing this song in my head, it is Ruthie's voice I hear. I would always compare any rendition of this song with the way she sang it in the 10th Anniversary Concert.
10th Is just uncomparable. The problem is, we all get older and that can also have an effect on your vocal chords. I've heard some say she was recovering after being sick and this show just came up to early. Either way, she own the song and no one every sang this song like Ruthie Henshall.
Doesn't matter whether she hit or not the right notes...what more important is...RUTHIE HENSHALL will always be the very standard of I DREAMED A DREAM... I will always look up her as my idol...i love her so much....
with the tenth anniversary version I completely agree, It is quite clearly the best ever rendition of the song. But if this was her only version it would not be the gold standard
I saw her sing this last night in Cork. It was an excellent version with great control and emotion. By contrast, its so obvious that she is not on top form in this clip, and there can be no argument that her pitch wavers in places. I'm sure no-one would have been more aware of this than Ruthie herself. But the show must go on, if at all possible, and it must have been very distressing for her to do so knowing she had some difficulties. That's brave. We expect and demand faultless performances from people of Ruthie's calibre every time; let's not forget that they are human too.
She’s always had pitch problems. Even in her prime. She’s had them even in her She Loves Me days, when high notes were always hit or miss. They just have never been so prevalent as they are here. I think she was ill, and this concert also doesn’t seem to have been especially well rehearsed. A lot of the musical direction seems a bit sloppy. And if they had more rehearsal time, they might have found a different key for her, or modified some of the phrasing. Even Salonga seemed uncomfortable in some of her numbers.
She has a unique vocal style, which I have never seen another singer employ. She sings much of the time with her teeth clenched almost together. I have never noticed that before with any singer. It is not just this performance, but with all of her songs. She is still impressive.
In her most famous version of the song the 10th anniversary of Les Miserables I believe she does not sing through her teeth she sings properly there, I don't know what the reason is for her doing that, maybe it's a bad habit she developed or maybe she as jaw issues I don't know, I love her very much though! She is so great
I was there. She struggled all night, must have been under the weather with her throat, she is usually pitch perfect.....she is still however, an absolute musical theatre legend x
She spelled 'phrase' incorrectly, get over yourself. If you want to picky, you used 'elucidate' incorrectly. She's correct, the sustained notes at the end of each line wanders flat.
To the people complaining about her voice, I made the mistake of reading the comments before listening to the rendition and expected it to be poor. It is nothing of the kind, this is still a very good performance. Yes, years have passed and she doesn't sound exactly like 30 years ago, how could it? This was awesome to watch and listen to. Just my 2 cents.
Love it! Such a raw performance. Her voice has matured, but I think that it just creates more depth to the song. Incredible. I really felt the emotion in this. She was phenomenal at the 10th anniversary concert, but this performance is just incredible, I'm captivated by the pain and suffering in her voice. Love it!
I love this performance! Its so real and truthful. The song is about anguish and sadness, and the fact her voice is strained a little just ads to the performance! In my humble opinion its not meant to be sung beautifully, because a the moment in the show, its any thing but beautiful: Its heartbreaking! Ruthie Delivers just that: A heartbreaking, pain-stricken performance! :) x
I am in love of her exquisite voice, I feel like I'm listening an angel, impeccable voice, impeccable perfomance oh my God I am in extasis listening her. I can listen her over and over, Ruthie you are beautiful and a BEAUTIFUL VOICE, I LOVE YOU, AND I LOVE HER VOICE FLAWLESS. The best version of I dreamed a dream
You cannot expect Ruthie to stand up to young Ruthie... What you can expect is a strong and beautiful voice... and passion. Here you have it. Shut it with your comparisons...
I love her. I still prefer her original performance when she was younger. Her voice has matured with age, but she's still gorgeous and the best ever. Her original rendition is unmatched
Honestly the performance she gave at the tenth anniversary was the perfect pitch musical version but this one has more of a Rock and Roll feel to it for me. Somewhat flawed but richer and grittier. I love it!!!
Regret that Ruthie's voice and breath control to sustain her top notes has disappeared. Such a shame, but it happens as we get older. Her performance in the 10th Anniversary concert is still the best rendition.
There was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting There was a time Then it all went wrong I dreamed a dream in times gone by When hope was high and life worth living I dreamed, that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used and wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung, no wine untasted But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart As they turn your dream to shame He slept a summer by my side He filled my days with endless wonder He took my childhood in his stride But he was gone when autumn came And still I dream he'll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms we cannot weather I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed
Has her voice over the years suffered a little? It appears so, it happens to us all. Nevertheless she is still a great entertainer and I'm still a huge fan! Like Frank Sinatra you will always peek at some age. Nevertheless don't be discouraged by that, I love you today as much as always....so sing for me! I will always appreciate it :)
I don't think any performance will compare to the 10th anniversary concert, that was sublime, and yes there are a couple of bum notes but for me that added to the emotion of the performance and added a different element that only maturity can bring - it helped communicate the pain and regret all the more so
Excellent. Ruthie He shall is and always will be Fantine. Too many negative comments from armchair critics that have no idea what they're talking about. This is a true, gritty performance; think of what Fantine has gone through at this point in the story.....
I think she can get Oscar through les miz(2012 movie) if she act Fantine but I eventually know she’s aged, but still much more better than Anne Hathaway
Ok... After looking through the comments I see I am not the only one who felt this particular performance was under pitch. Nevertheless SHE IS STILL AMAZING!!! I adore her. They should have brought the key down for her. I'm just saying. It would have still been amazing.
I can't help but wonder how so many can conclude Ruthie lost it after comparing this performance to the 10th anniversary when she was only in her 20's.
I am 59 and can still sing on key. She is much too young to have this much trouble with her voice. Something is wrong with her vocal chords. Very heart breaking.
Oh wow... I thought she was lucky at the 10th anniversary, she is definitely the best Fantine. I'm no voice pro but not like the others, she does not pause to breathe air at 3:57
A few bum notes in their Ruthie...maybe it's cold. Maybe the not exercising them vocal chords as much. `Or just getting older. But still the best version I've heard at the 10th Anniversary.
I don’t know how you can say this is better than the 10th Anniversary Les Mis performance. She is flat on many notes. The 10th Anniversary performance was perfection
@@garethbarnett5846 I love her too but she obviously has had vocal damage these last few years and it is heartbreaking. Her passion and beauty is still there but the voice is struggling. As a singer myself, I heart hurts for her.
@@garethbarnett5846 whether someone is flat or not is not an opinion, someone is either on pitch or they aren’t. Here, she’s very flat in many of the notes. I love her voice, but factually, she was not hitting the notes properly here
Couldn't make it to the end :( This is so flat in pitch and highlights one of Ruthie's ongoing odd singing techniques of predominantly singing through her teeth. Surely a teacher or vocal coach has raised this with her?
Funny all these "experts" on her voice. I cant find videos or records of you singing or being in successful shows or producing albums ? Just arm chair and key board experts proscastinating as self appointed "experts"
And I don't even know where Lytham is. But I know where the Albert Hall is. And that recording is much better. In this, Ms Henshall seems to sing flat quite a lot. By some margin.
I can't understand the criticisms as Ruthie sounds fine to me. It looks bloody cold, wet and miserable where she is singing. As for ageing, don't we all? The earlier videos of her are 20+ years old.
I think the issue of her voiice is pretty easy to explain: In the 10th ani version she was working in an ensemble-cast, where they were telling a story. This means the song stays close to the chest and 'feels' personal'. In this version she is dolled up, massive gown on, ready for glamour. To sing a song about how your life went to the shitter, while wearing a year-salary dress is rather defusing the emotional aspect imho. The voice is still good, but this version is too showcase-y.
Im a full grown man of 43 years old, and I think I’ll cry watching this interpretation.
My God…
you need to grow up and need a good shake then you are a weak person
When I sing this song in my head, it is Ruthie's voice I hear. I would always compare any rendition of this song with the way she sang it in the 10th Anniversary Concert.
That's right and even She is far from that level in this rendition.
We wrote the same comment some how in different vifeos...
I didn’t recognize her face at all but that voice, I recognized immediately. She is the one and only Fantine in my heart
It’s the 10th for me too
10th Is just uncomparable. The problem is, we all get older and that can also have an effect on your vocal chords. I've heard some say she was recovering after being sick and this show just came up to early. Either way, she own the song and no one every sang this song like Ruthie Henshall.
I love Ruthies older richer voice. Not identical to her younger voice but still powerful and she captured the essence of this song x
Me too, I could hear the pain and the story in Fantine even more now in this version.
Doesn't matter whether she hit or not the right notes...what more important is...RUTHIE HENSHALL will always be the very standard of I DREAMED A DREAM...

i am skeptical. i also heard her perform 'don't cry for me argentina' recently and she was just as she is here.

Bad technique and booze did it, not age. I agree though her 10th Anniversary rendition is wonderful.
Her performance at the 10th anniversary was amazing. It gave me chills. This didn't
But Lea's voice..
she's lost her ears.
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong
I dreamed a dream in times gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed, that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream
I dreamed
She will always be the best fantine
This may not be the best vocally but the acting within it gives me goosebumps
true that
Not true. This should be a cautionary tale on treating your voice well. Any ENT would you this is a result of vocal damage(nodules)
