Is it true that the diesel and petrol have different 4wd systems? I’m in the UK and deciding which one to get. Petrol has a proper transfer box whereas the diesel has front and rear separately?
I grew up in Michigan and always kept a small light 4x4 for winter. S10, explorer, jeep Cherokee...... Those light short wheel base 4x4s do great in the snow.
I love my jeep liberty. I’ve rolled it on an icy road and that rig protected me from getting seriously hurt and was able to drive it back home after the roll over. Today we are using it as a mud rig as it’s not road legal.

It does have a trac lok rear differential. At almost 150,000 miles when I filmed that it was probably due for a rebuild to tighten it up a little. We raced the Liberty at a Rally Cross last year and the axle locks up good. A little brake and about 3/4 throttle and the Jeep pivots really well.
It is cheap, easy to work on, easy to find parts for, does fairly good off road. While it is not the most comfortable thing to drive it is way more comfortable than your Wrangler. I am starting to think this may be the best value Jeep produced. It does a lot of things really good.

I just bought a 2005 keep liberty with a 3.7 liter engine at almost 200,000 miles . It was sitting up for a few months and I paid 500 for it . It runs and drives for what I’ve seen the 20 mins I drove it . Any tips for maintaining it and what I should do now to make sure it’s serviced properly? Thanks in advance 🙂
The best tips I can give you are keep the fluids changed especially the motor oil. If you are late on oil changes you may end up with carbon deposits restricting oil flow to important parts. The other thing is Do Not let it get Hot! And I mean if that temp gauge gets to 3/4 to the H, shut it down immediately. Those engines have a habit of dropping valve seats if they get hot. That is what happened to mine and why I got it cheap. In fact at 150,000 miles it had happened twice and the previous owners had enough. I hope this helps! 👍

@@TurlosGarage Awesome! Also think about how interesting is the current section you are on? And editing you can work on shortening things up and tightening things up and analyzing what parts are boring therefore, what parts do you need to cut out or make shorter than the other parts. On my most successful video, my animal Crossing unboxings video, I spent a lot of time with the editing, actually adding up how much time I talked about each element. I questioned why some parts of boring stuff were just as long as the most interesting stuff. And I cut it down so that the boring parts were a fraction of time of the others. That way in the big picture, the video is focusing much more on the interesting stuff that I know people want.
@@switchunboxing Thanks. I have cut my videos down from 18-30 minutes to 10-15. I was putting together 20-30 minute videos because that is what I like to watch but my average view time is 7 minutes. It makes the others more rare and valuable. This one was actually beat up when I started. The engine had some issues that probably would have done it in if I didn’t hydrolock it first. Looks like you managed to pick a Liberty that wasn't trail rated. The Cherokee you picked was. Right off the bat, the deck is stacked in favor of the Cherokee
It could use better tires and the tires on it are one size smaller than the original ones. The previous owner said these were 20% less than the cheapest tires it was supposed to have. It still does great off road. And does not do bad every where else.
I really want to make another video like this but until the Grand Cherokee is fixed I can’t afford to break any more cars. I have been looking at cheap Cherokee XJ’s.
@@TurlosGarage It would be interesting to see what you could do with a liberity with just minor mods like the next phase just upgrade the tires to an allterrain and see what it does
If it does it would have a rear auto locking differential. The Liberty has a limited slip differential, not a posi-trac as they were trying to call it....and the limited slip is an option not a standard feature and doesn't look like it had a limited slip, or it was worn out...in a straight line it'll act like a locker, when you turn it'll release the clutch packs in the differential to allow different speeds for cornering. If you really want the best Quadra-Drive system you want a Jeep Grand Cherokee from 1999-2004...in those years the quadra-drive gave you visco-locking front and rear differentials. From 2005 on the "Quadra-Drive" only gives you a rear auto-locker.
Why BLD isn't kicking in? Did you shut off Traction Control? If you did, BLD will not work and the car will stuck when a wheel is in the air, even while 4WD, exactly as depicted on the video beginning.
You’re comparing two completely different option packages. You can get the grand Cherokee in a v6 and without the awd. I get you are using what you have but a v8 awd is going to be very different than a v6 4wd.
I know it was a completely unfair comparison. But I had to give the Grand Cherokee a fair chance by using an newer vehicle with more options. In the end, I still like the 2002 Liberty Sport better than the 2005 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7.

A lot of comments on the Liberty’s capability off road. Should I make a video and go more in depth? Most the people that have commented know more than I do about these Jeeps, and probably driving off road.
Apparently some of them do. I think some kind of posi or locking differential in the rear would make the Liberty very capable off road. I have to correct myself, there is some kind of posi in the rear. I can spin both rear tires when turning on wet asphalt. It is not enough for off roading. I think a locking rear differential would help but a lift kit that allows for more rear axle articulation would also be a benefit.

The grand is a better soccer mom suv much more comfortable to drive take road trips whatever. The liberty is a tank it can go just about anywhere. Live in mid west lots of dirt roads ice and snow and nothing stops it. It is not the most comfortable thing to drive but it can do stuff my wife’s all wheel drive crossover can’t. I feel like people lump the liberty in with the patriot or the compass and it is definitely not one of those it’s a real jeep maybe not a wrangler but it still can do jeep things.
More data please, like specifically which year and trim is the KJ and which is the Grand Cherokee, I know the liberties come in And have a few different transfer case options, and my Liberty does have ESP, which is extremely helpful in comparison to my older Liberty but this is the 2007 limited model, and on that I have the command track case, it's got the four-wheel drive full-time option which is apparently usable on dry road, so that's definitely better than delivery you're using which seems like a base model perhaps with a rudimentary transfer case, strange to me to see the two front wheel spinning but no action from the rear but that was because one rear was spinning I imagine . I don't know what kind of differential on the rear I have but where I would become stuck previously with my 2004 Liberty I could easily push through with The ESP which blinks a light when it's being used it's also got a electric throttle which is strange to me, but also what model And you're for your Cherokee? She over 05, I did not know Jeep made an all-wheel drive option or system, most of the time I think of all wheel drive is all wheel BS.. either it's not real like on the Ford escape 2007, or it's always on and causes damage and extra wear like Saturn Vue AWD, these are my two favorite Jeeps you got right now the 2012 and up Jeeps are nice and by Jeeps I mean the Cherokee, but I wouldn't buy one past or 14 or 15..
If your Liberty has full and part time 4WD, its Selec-Trac not Command-Trac. Command-Trac system has 2WD, 4WD Part Time, and Low Range. Selec-Trac has 2WD, 4WD Part Time, 4WD Full Time, and Low Range....both have neutral. The Jeep full time 4WD system has changed over the years. It used to actually be true full time 4WD, where power was sent to the front axle all the time regardless of traction conditions. The newer models starting in 1999 went to the NP247 transfer case which diverted power to the rear wheels during normal driving, and when low traction conditions were detected it would then start to send power to the front, and could send 100% of the power to the front wheels if needed. Prior to 1999 they used the NP249 transfer case in the Quadra-Trac models which sent 48% power to the front and 52% power to the rear during normal driving, but could vary the output depending on conditions. I had the 1996 Grand Cherokee with Quadra-Trac, that thing did awesome in the snow/ice, and I took it offroad a lot and never had issues getting stuck, the 4WD system would figure it out and you'd just keep on going. The downfall to the NP249 transfer case was it had a viscous coupler in the transfer case that varied the power going to the front axle, over time that viscous coupler would wear out, normally after around 150,000 miles or so....once that happened you went from full time 4WD, to more of a part time 4WD as the viscous coupler would fail in the engaged 50/50 torque split and during tight turns it would cause wheel hop and drive train binding. my 96 Grand Cherokee amazingly made it to 232k before the viscous coupler failed...and at that time I didn't know I could have simply swapped in an NP242 or NP231 transfer case and kept on going. The NP231 transfer case is Command-Trac part time 4WD only. The NP242 transfer case is Selec-Trac full and part time 4WD. Both the NP247 and NP249 are both the Quadra-Trac Transfer case. What gives you the Quadra-Drive system in 1999-2004 the front and rear differentials had vari-lock differentials allowing full lock up of the differential if necessary and they were automatic, and hydro-mechanical....in 2005 and newer Quadra-Drive models they only have a rear locking differential and the front is an open differential and they use the ABS system to modulate brake application to trick the front differential into sending power one way or the other for added traction....it just wears out your brake pads much quicker LOL. Most automatic 4WD systems, and AWD systems are reactive rather than pro-active, so they engage after you've already lost traction, rather than being live all the time providing you varying amounts of traction/stability regardless of road conditions. Subaru's AWD system is on all the time and sends power to all 4 wheels in varying amounts depending on many variables.
Sweet!

I have a friend that bought an 06 CRD Grand Cherokee a few months ago and it has been great. I am very impressed with the 4x4 system in these Jeeps.
Got a stock 07 liberty with some AT tires paid 6k for it. Live in bc Canada and go hunting in the mountains regularly. The thing is a beast on the trails usually my buddies get scared to take their trucks and all end up in my liberty
I love it! That is Awesome! I am still impressed with what the Liberty is capable of.
I pulled a buried 4WD Kubota with a bush hog implement still attached out with my liberty. Libertys are very capable little Jeeps. They almost remind you on the old school Cherokee with the inline 4.0.
I have had a lot of people tell me the KJ’s are going to replace the XJ as they are starting to become more valuable and harder to find.
@@TurlosGarage I agree. Some of the KJ's are like bulletproof and will definitely be around. They can be expensive to maintain but if they are treated well and maintained, they are worth every penny. They are easily as capable as a land rover if they are set up properly. They're quite dependable and very good for treks. Like you said, just gotta keep an eye on the overheating.
You got a video of that also.
We would love to see that.
Just like my friends would like to see that 40 pound perch fish I cought last Friday. Lmfao
The Liberty replaced the Cherokee XJ in the US. In other countries where the Liberty was sold, it was still called a Cherokee.
New Subscriber here. I have two 2003 Jeep Liberty's one of which I bought with a blown engine. I'm using it for body parts. Liberty's most two important things to upgrade are a bigger 4 core radiator and a good transmission cooler. Our little Liberty has been a great 4wd that goes awsome in snow.

I love my jeep liberty. I’ve rolled it on an icy road and that rig protected me from getting seriously hurt and was able to drive it back home after the roll over. Today we are using it as a mud rig as it’s not road legal.

Wow.. The liberty does not have rear posi-trac. It is an open or limited diff. I'll stick with a good ole' WJ with lunchbox lockers on 32's and a 3-inch lift.
There were different options. I have a 2006 Liberty with Command Trac 4x4 and in Low it would Easily traverse what was in this video.
I have a 2004 liberty renegade, and it’s got a locker in the rear. I’ve taken that rung everywhere.
I think if my Liberty had a locker it would go anywhere.

What is the difference between the 2002 and 2007 Liberty models, and is there a difference between them and the Liberty Ranged, and which one is better? Thank you?
I am not exactly sure. I think mostly the body design was changed a little. There is a Liberty Renegade that had some off road extras.
The liberty will match almost every rig if you give it a decent set of tires.... the "off road test" was a terrible display (first few mins)
That Jeep Liberty wasn’t even Trail rated. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was.
I own both a kj and a WK would take the liberty off road anytime before the grand cherokee
I have to agree with the comment on BETTER tires on the Libbey...From experience when switched from Wranglers SR-A to Falken A/t3w, it was an impressive big difference between the two tires how it handled offroad Mud and 6inches of snow.
I've also owned both a GC and Libbey...and i agree GC is way more comfortable, but i found the Libbey more easier to steer and handle .
Liberty is not a very capable offroader! AT ALL!

"It bottomed out a little bit" I'm sure standing on the throttle had nothing to do with it

If the Liberty had sure grip it would have done a lot better.
I never would have guessed the liberty.
It is cheap, easy to work on, easy to find parts for, does fairly good off road. While it is not the most comfortable thing to drive it is way more comfortable than your Wrangler. I am starting to think this may be the best value Jeep produced. It does a lot of things really good.
The exhaust tic drives me nuts. I will be fixing that very soon.
Wait, you can't lock the diffs on libert? Is that true for the CRD model as well?
I found out that was an option. Some had electronic locking diffs some did not. I am not sue if that was something standard on the CRD models.
That "Trail Rated" badge means something. Do your homework then wheel a Libby with the badge (and the right tires). Big dif!
You can install a locker in the c8.25, I ran a rear 8.25 in my old yj and installed a arb locker. I just built up a kj and will install a lunchbox locker in it.

Thanks so much

I think that Jeep liberty might had benifited with some "Allterrain Tires"!

does the WK have the QDII system?
Yes

I have to correct myself, there is some kind of posi in the rear. I can spin both rear tires when turning on wet asphalt. It is not enough for off roading. I think a locking rear differential would help but a lift kit that allows for more rear axle articulation would also be a benefit.
@@TurlosGarage well a couple of the guys say some of the have lo range 4wd and if thats the case then they should be very capable!
@@EricJohnson-tb9sj in the one year Liberty review video you can see the transfer case shifter at 4:20.

08:23 Water ingestion in engine air intake
Broke the Number 8 rod and bent the number seven. The Grand Cherokee’s air inlet is about the center of the grille while the liberty is on top of the radiator support. A few inches makes a huge difference sometimes. 👍
I liked your WARNING LABEL in the beginning! Thought that was pretty funny! Your Narration of this epic is amazing! You are a great narrator! Wow! It was interesting to see you ROCKING that Liberty in the mud puddles like that. You were literally ROCKING IT! So happy to see your wife participating like that! Great choice of music. I am really enjoying your narration skills. That makes all the difference to help move the story along. Oops -- your forgot your take measuring stick/tape? (Chris at C and C Autoworks is also a great narrator.) I am enjoying seeing the differences between these two vehicles--the pros and cons of each. Wow! This is a great video! No wonder you have almost 55,000 views since November 8 of last year. Great Job! Wow! Ruthie B. Howard 10.19.21 I just became your 903rd subscriber.
Thank You Ruthie B! I have learned a lot from each video. This was fun to make and we had a good time as a family taking a little off road trip although my wife was not happy about breaking the engine of the Grand Cherokee. I am still working on getting it fixed. Chris at C&C does some great videos too.
@@TurlosGarage I am so happy that you can have fun with your wife like that! That is truly important. And yes! Mr. Chris puts out some great videos, too! I watch many of his -- and he supports our channel, too! Glad that we are all interconnected with some of the same channel. I like that. Have a great day! Ruthie B. Howard 10.19.21
Stuck in Park as a result of wading through a puddle lol
The shift cable came out of the bracket on the transmission. I clipped it back in and no matter how hard I pulled it would not come out again. LOL
What year is the Liberty?
2002. Not as new or as nice as yours.
Fun video and a fun place to drive..
It was a fun day of filming. I had been there once before but had no idea how big the place was. We got lost on some of the trails and had to make a u turn a few times.
Iv'e owned a Liberty and a Grand Cherokee. I still have the Grand Cherokee for many, many, many reasons.
what reasons ?
Go go liberty lol funny stuff
It does really well off road, and going to the mall. It is the best all around SUV I have owned so far.
Hydro-lock, huh?
Just a little. Only broke the number 8 rod and bent the number 7.
Jeep🤙
I love my Jeep’s. They are impervious to everything but my driving.
I have owned both of these. 06 grand and a 12 liberty. I still drive a 12 liberty just a different one so I’m on my second liberty I always kick myself for trading the first one .
