- DIY Faux Stones & Wood - Fairy House Jars
In this video tutorial I show you how I made a medium size fairy house using two jars, tin foil, hot glue, paper clay and watercolors. It’s fun to make and you can use it as candy jar for a candy bar, birthday party, thank you gift for a baby shower, baby room decoration, piggy bank, jewelry box, cookie jar and so on. You can turn it into a lamp also adding some battery operated LED candle lights
Materials and tools: two empty jars with lids, aluminum foil, paper clay (the one that keeps its size when dry - I used “DAS modelling material” a great paper clay, but the secret is to water it a little and work it in your hand before you use it, to make it smoother), hot glue and water colors. (A lot of you asked me if you can use polymer clay on this kind of projects. Of course you can use polymer clay but for bigger jars like the ones I used in this video you will have to use a lot of polymer clay and the whole project will become expensive. You will be able to save a lot of material using thin foil but still, I would recommend you to use paper clay.) Choose some jars and clean them with hot water and soap. Think about the shape of your fairy house. Start shaping some tin foil into your house roof. Cover it with tin foil and integrate the lid at the bottom. You can add multiple layers of foil until you get the desired result. Glue the tin foil cap to the jar’s lid using hot glue. Cover the tin foil shape with a layer of paper clay. Draw the door and the windows on the jar and start adding clay around them building the walls. You don’t need to pay too much attention to details at this point. Let everything dry. Apply another layer of clay to create textures and details like door handles, roof chimney, stones or any detail that might give your fairy house a unique look. I made some stone textures for the walls and wood texture for the door and windows. If the clay doesn’t stick to the previous layer I recommend you to water the areas you want to work on. Also keep a water container near by to wet your hands and working utensils when they get sticky. Use water to achieve smooth and shiny surfaces. Paint the fairy house in the desired colors. If you use watercolors for this step I recommend you seal them in the end with varnish or regular hair spray.

The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need
3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay?
Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects.
4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks?
You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question
5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations?
I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay

I made these with third graders with solar lights on top. They each designed their own. We read Fable Haven together and they were obsessed with fairies. When they graduated from fifth grade this year many told me it was one of their best memories and they still have them in their rooms.

Si están muy bonitas pero no entiendo cual es la finalidad de enseñar el trabajo si no das el material y no vas diciendo que hacer, que colores usas, y todos los tips que se requieren. Imagínate una clase de cocina, que se ponga la maestra a guizar y los alumnos viendo, y los ingredientes? y cuanto tiempo es de cosido? y cuanto se le hecha? y que le puso? etc. etc. Para mi es una falta de respeto que no hablen, ni digan nada y como crees que yo voy a compartir algo asi.?

1. ¿Qué arcilla usas?
Yo uso una arcilla de papel. Lo compro o hago el mío dependiendo de lo que quiero crear

El hecho en casa no es tan suave y solo es bueno para superficies con textura como piedras y corteza de árbol. Es muy barato de fabricar, por lo que podría valer la pena lijarlo y trabajarlo un poco más que comprar una arcilla de papel. Sin embargo, no puede guardarlo más de 5 a 7 días en la nevera. Tiene la mejor consistencia cuando recién lo hizo y está fresco, por lo que le recomendaría que lo use el mismo día o el siguiente y no haga más de lo que necesita.
3. ¿Puedo usar arcilla seca al aire? ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre la arcilla seca al aire y la arcilla de papel?
Muchas veces las tiendas venden tanto arcilla de papel como arcilla de cerámica con la misma etiqueta "arcilla seca al aire". Es cierto, ambos son endurecidos al aire, pero hay bastantes diferencias: la arcilla al aire libre (arcilla de cerámica) es realmente barro, arcilla natural, mientras que la arcilla de papel está hecha con celulosa y otros ingredientes. La arcilla de papel es más fuerte que la arcilla seca al aire (arcilla cerámica). La arcilla seca al aire (arcilla cerámica) se contrae y la arcilla de papel no se contrae. Esta es la razón por la arcilla de papel es la mejor opción para mi tipo de proyectos. Mis proyectos generalmente requieren que cubras un frasco o una botella de plástico.
