The Film That Almost Ruined James Bond? - 007 Die Another Day - Movie Review

  • We are taking a look at 007 Die Another Day. This James Bond movie is often completely hated and looked at very unfavorably. Being the final Pierce Brosnan James Bond film, this movie had a lot to live up to. It was meant to be a sort of James Bond anniversary celebration movie, but instead turned into a film with inconsistent writing, direction and reception. #jamesbond #007 #moviereview

Michael Apted probably couldn't have completely saved it but having him back could have made film more grounded. Tamahori went too above and beyond imo. He kept trying to make every scene feel massive when most things should have been more down to earth.

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  7 месяцев назад +2

Yeah, I think that with the same script it would not have saved the movie from the criticism received, but I do think that it might’ve helped it have a more grounded feeling in reality after the changes that 9/11 made to the entertainment industry and peoples understanding of governments and military, etc. I’m not sure what you would do about the Icarus space laser, though. No matter what that’s kind of out there for the time.

That’s true. I thought the surfing idea was cool/fun but then once he comes onto the land, it looks like he’s standing in front of a green screen instead of actually in a environment. And there’s a lot of places like that in the movie which I would argue the previous three films did not really have that problem. I think that when making this movie they were way too enamored with CGI and the ability to mess with effects.

I love Die Another Day. It came out after Vin Diesel's XxX and the Bourne Identity, and just showed why James Bond is the king of action films. I have no idea why anyone thinks it might have killed Bond. The Daniel Craig films all suck ass compared to this. They take themselves far too seriously for films based on pulp novels. I blame Batman Begins for this. Die Another Day is the best Bond film in every conceivable respect and the final melting ice castle scene and car battle was just so fucking epic. You are vastly overanalyzing this film when literally all the same criticisms can be applied to just about any film, especially Bond films. The audience revenue proves this was the Bond film we wanted and needed. The critics are all just trying to get attention by hating on the best film in the series, they did the same thing to On Her Magesty's Secret Service which was also excellent.

The move to make North Korea the new enemy instead of Russia was a smart move, and had they stuck a little closer to the Colonel Sun influence and not gone so extreme the movie could have been great. This movie was a mess. The sad thing is that it starts out really well with Bond getting captured by Colonel Moon's dad and then being tortured during the credits sequence. I was looking for a mano a mano confrontation between Bond and the agent that betrayed him (which I thought was going to be the Damian Falco character played by Michael Madsen) , as the climax to the film. Once we find out that it is Miranda Frost, we know that is not going to happen, and we are left with a smoldering mess of melting ice, Bond para gliding, people getting face lifts to look completely different and a final battle between Bond battling Graves in a Robo cop like outfit. Terrible.
I think the best post credits sequence is the sword fight between Bond and Graves at Blades. I also did enjoy the battle between Bond's car and Zhou's car...but this was too little to save this film.

Interesting how the World Trade Center incident probably helped the Jason Bourne film to become a better film than was originally written, and a worse film than DoD could have been.
This isn't even the worst Bond film, or the most tonally dissonant, and sadly the actors seem to always take the brunt of a bad Bond film, but people fail to remember that EON is the one greenlighting all these screenplays, the actors just do the best with what they're given. Can you imagine what Brosnan's Bond could have been with good writing? But then you could say that about Dalton and Moore to some extent as well.
If anything can said to have ruined and maybe ended the James Bond franchise, it's going to be No Time To Die.

I dislike what might be described as the 'character development' Bond underwent during the Craig years; and the films themselves became far too sentimental. Killing him off was the final straw.
I now consider Die Another Day to be the final Bond film. The producers would find it hard to convince me to part with my money to see a new 'Bond' film at the cinema in the way that I did for every film from Goldeneye to No Time to Die.

The same applies to Daniel Craig's tenure. Both Die Another Day & No Time to Die would have fared much better critically if Campbell had been at the helm...I'm sure of that. IMO, all Brosnan Bond films (despite their flaws) are the best of the franchise. To the contrary I see the Craig Bond films as the worse of the franchise. Basically Craig Bond is a Jason Bourne rip off; and I don't like the "grounded" Bond, I much prefer the outlandish campy Bond with all the sci-fi gadgets. That is the "real" Bond.

I feel like too many of the Bond films have similar names -- Tommorow Never Dies, Live and Let Die, Die Another Day, No Time to Die, Goldfinger, Goldeneye, The Man with the Golden Gun, A View to a Kill, License to Kill, etc... its hard to remember one from the other, especially the Brosnan films that all meld together. I always felt he was in the Roger Moore category, and their films get about the same level of popcorn ratings. I feel like Daniel Craig is closer to the Connery model and their films all seem to get a slightly higher popcorn rating than Moore/Brosnan. The other guy was in his own little category.

I don’t think Die another Day could have killed the franchise. It was simply a Diamond are forever remake (the remake of a bad Bond movie, to summarize) I understand why they returned to a more grounded tone (which was very welcome), but we shouldn’t forget that the Bond franchise had the habitude of changing tone on a regular basis (remember For your eyes only after the over the top Moonraker, or the gritty spies flicks of the Dalton era, after the campy Moore years) But, to me, if something has killed the franchise (and I’m very scared by that), it’s the way Craig left in no time to die.

Just have it being a survival movie with Bond on his own trying to get across to border to South Korea.

"Die Another Day" is my favorite Bond movie with Brosnan. Yes it was over the top, but that's what Bond movies are all about.

    If nothing else it's fun
Brosnan is great as always and didn't deserve the way he was treated wasn't his fault the movie was slated when it came out
He had another film in him
At least anyway i enjoy the film it's a guilty pleasure of mine
Good review both of you 👍

No it was after casino royale where All bond films ruined the franchise. Daniel Craig was boring. Stop bashing the great Pierce Bronson. I loved die another day especially the beginning action scene 😅

It’s not really brosnan’s fault the movie came out how it is. He just so happened to not do his best performance and had a horrible director and writing.

I always thought the film would have been better if the Korean characters just stayed Korean. The whole idea they want to be white guys to hide and use the diamonds was ridiculous.

That’s actually pretty funny, and I know this is going to be a super unpopular take, but I actually really enjoyed Star Trek nemesis lol. And I was a huge fan of the TNG generation, so I wasn’t like a casual fan or anything, I think I was just in the minority. I do know it has a lot of problems though. I think it would’ve probably been better if Jonathan Frakes had directed it, even if it had a similar story, I think he could’ve given it more heart.

When I was a teen watching this, I thought Die Another Day was a pretty bad movie. I rewatched it about a month ago for a Bond-son marathon with a few friends and I will say... Die Another Day is a fantastic movie to shoot the breeze with pals.

That’s the thing - even with its problems, I personally think it’s still really fun and enjoyable. It kind of feels like watching an action video game at times. And there’s a lot of really cool scenes in it, and I think even people who don’t like the movie appreciate a lot of the good scenes.

my problem with the invisible car is the cloak is too perfect for a 1st attempt technology. It some how masks the tyres and wheels, hides the shadow the car casts has no real distortion if you look across the surface or look at the surface directly and has 100% the same effect regardless if it is being emitted from metal or glass. Its just too sci fi over the top.

    Compared to whats happened since
    - the real ACTUAL death of James Bond on film - and the nothing that is happening right now ...
I'll happily take another Die Another Day style movie ANYTIME now.
And i bet millions of other Bond fans feel the same way.
And i would also DEFINITELY choose to watch that film over No Time To Die any day.
It used to get alot of hate years back,
but i think in the years since and with all the serious depressing Bond material we've seen come out in recent years,
I think people now look back at this era and even at this movie itself with a great deal of fondness and nostalgia
The sense of over the top silly fun and adventure in Die Another Day is something that we had always gotten with the Bond films and something i think Audiences actually have grown to miss in the series.
And i bet they would be very happy to see the return of this style - even with all of its bad dialogue and larger than life impossible to believe gadgets and stunts!
But maybe we could leave out the tidal wave surfing....

Miranda was University with Moon. If you like he "turned" her to his way if thinking, made her a fanatic As a result when she competed in Fencing she then got noticed by MI6 which was her In on Moon's behalf.

Haven't thought about this movie for at least a good decade. Great review, got me wanting to re-watch it alongside the other Brosnan Bond films.
From memory this film felt like the so-bad-its-good Brosnan flick being genuinely good until Jinx showed up who like Jill said, felt like they were portraying her like she wanted to be the next Bond but having her mess up enough that it felt like you weren't meant to root for her.
Then the waves scene and Gustav Graves' armour, Graves' whole DNA modification and even invisible car at the time adds to the so-bad-its-good nature. Maybe I'd appreciate the latter on rewatch.

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  7 месяцев назад

Yeah I think I enjoyed it way more than I did when I was younger, but it's definitely a mixed bag. It's a shame Jinx was ramrodded into the story because that definitely just added to the issues of the movie :/

Sorry, but as bad as some of the more contentious bits in DAD were, IMO this film stands head and shoulders above any Daniel Craig Bond film (with the exception of Casino Royale), and I will always rate Brosnan as a better Bond over Craig, any day of the week.

@@sethdavis459 nope! The whole set up of the Bond girl being Moneypenny at the end was ridiculous. Bond spent so long with her out in the field and yet he didn’t know her full name till she told him at the end of the film? Seriously? Would have much rather had John Cleese return as Q (or R) than what we got - a stereotypical portrayal of a young geeky computer nerd who looks about 12 years old! I thought Bardem with his highlighted blonde hair was a ridiculous villain and his motive to get revenge on M, years later after what she did to him, seemed too long a gap to be believable.
The ending was, as others have noted, reminiscent of Home Alone and since when did Bond inherit a stately home? This film (and CR) mentioned he was an orphan, so why couldn’t the script writers have had Skyfall be the children’s home he spent his years at, after the death of his parents? That would have been much more believable. I also don’t get why they killed M off. Silva killing her (via the attack on Skyfall) means that he ends up getting what he initially set out to do (even if he didn’t live to see her die) and Bond ends up failing in his mission to protect her! It would have been better for M to have survived Skyfall and simply retire at the end of the film, paving the way for Mallory to take over.
I also didn’t think the action sequences were anything new or special. The only thing I really liked (and it was a good nod back to Fleming) was the villain’s deformity (something which I could see Fleming coming up with had he lived to write more Bond books.) I will say that Skyfall is 2nd best to Casino Royale, followed by SPECTRE and then NTTD, with QoS bringing up the rear, but the last three are so much of a muchness for me, that what I think it’s shown is that without the blueprint of a Fleming novel to go by (or taking elements from different Fleming novels), the script writers and the producers cannot come up with enough essence of Fleming to do the Bond character justice.
CR was superb in its updated adaption and I would have loved had they followed it up with more updated versions of Fleming’s novels, beginning with LALD, but that would have needed each film to have been released every two years, and Craig’s age would have been against him completing the full 11 novels. Had the producers gone with Campbell’s choice of Henry Cavill as Bond, aged 23 at the time, he could have achieved that feat had he been up for it, but everything is in hindsight, isn’t it? Still, I have CR to watch again and again, and whilst I thought Craig did a good job in that film, he’ll never be Bond to me, and I feel Henry Cavill was a major missed opportunity.
