This film has one major saving grace, the atmosphere. It feels like a nyquil fever dream when you watch it and if you treat it as such its a nice guilty pleasure to have on in the background

Terrific review here, Cody. Huge respect for bringing up the meddling that this film went through. It's a tough watch, especially knowing what was removed (as I think we'd all be having far more positive feelings towards it if we got the original cut that Tim Pope and David S. Goyer were going for). A lot of fun sequences were cut, such as Ashe giving the crow the "thumbs up" when he arrives at the Trinity drug plant and using a broken window to kill the two henchmen who helped Kali kidnap Sarah while climbing Judah's tower, and hopefully we can all experience them someday because I genuinely believe there's a film worth seeing here. While not my most favorite, it’s still a good watch and the differences can be… odd, but it’s the kind of movie you would put on while cooking or something
It doesnt hold a candle to the original but its a decent enough film on its own. Beautiful directing in my opinion and a decent soundtrack. Story kinda gets a lil convoluted at times and some of the acting is weak with the supporting cast. Still like it miles ahead of Wicked Prayer ( good luck with that shitbomb! Lmao)
You talking about not being able to understand the actor had me rolling around laughing. Never saw any of the crow sequels, never had any reason to. Maybe I’ll get around to them at some point
I’ve never understood the hate for the first sequel to any movie being a copy of the first, if the first of any series was good or great why wouldn’t you want more of that. So I don’t hate this one. I will say the white makeup could have been better
As someone who suffered through every sequel I hated this movie . Vince Perez doesn't really have a great deal of lines in this and I thought the addition of the yellow power ranger was unnecessary because you never believed she was a bad guy. I got yellow ranger pretending to be a villain
As much as I love the original film this one edges it out by just a bit. 1. Because like you mentioned, the tone and look of the film. I love the other worldly feel and lighting to this one. It feels much more creative and surrealist to me. 2. Iggy Pop's Curve and the villains feel a bit more brutal. 3. The biggest reason is that I exclusively watch the Director's Cut, Yes, there is already one. Came out on the original VHS release. It is hard to find but you can get it on DVD (no Blu Ray.) It clarifies so much more of the story and helps differentiate it from the original. Like at the end it makes it so much more clear that Ashe never gets to return to the dead. He has to stay alive and immortal on Earth and suffer through his pain by making the choice to save Sara instead of leaving with Danny and the soul of the crow after it is killed during the parade. I also just recently finished the novelization of this movie and yes, even though there is a Director's Cut there is still so much that Weinstein changed that they never got to shoot. Like the Crow Sara that bookends the film. The book also makes clear that the "Murder of Crows" are the other souls that past crow's have risen for revenge and the reason that they appear is because Ashe is supposed to go with Danny and not save Sara. The Murder is there to allow him to join them but more importantly, the Murder is led by the soul of Eric Draven to save Sara from Judah Earl. Because Ashe doesn't pass over he messes that up and Sara is killed so that is yet another burden that he must live out for eternity on Earth/Hell. It is all so much deeper but we unfortunately were robbed of that. HATE HATE HATE Salvation. So dull. No excitement or energy in that movie at all. No style. Terrible performances. Terrible editing. It is the epitome of the phrase "Phoning it in" for me. It just feels like no one cared. Wicked Prayer is shit but at least they tried to make it look interesting and gave it a more fast paced editing style with the flashbacks and such much like the original and City of Angels. The movie is just terribly missed cast. Edward Furlong is a fucking joke as a Crow. He looks like a little kid trying to wear his bigger brothers goth clothing but fails miserably. David Boreanaz (who I loved as Angel on Buffy) is so god awful and hammy. Trying utterly to be the most outlandish actor in the film. Wicked Prayer is such a shame because the cast really is spectacular but they all just shit the bed.
Yall need to youtube the crow city of angels 2nd coming. Its the movie with some deleted scenes some parts of the comic book thrown in and scenes moved around for continuity. Its the closest thing you'll get to the movie before Weinstein got his hands on it.
I fell in love with this movie because of the style/the look, the soundtrack, and yes., Vincent Perez's performance. The story WAS a good story, the problem was the final product being chopped up and pissed on by the Weinstein co. The thing is, I instantly "got" what Pope and Goyer were going for...even through the studio chopped editing, I could see it (maybe I was lucky). The look as this sulphur -like drenched pallet, filled with smog, broken glass... artistically, the setting was beautiful - a pretty dark and decrepit beauty anyway. The way Pope set up some of the shots with Perez were amazing as well. Particularly the shot as he first puts on his coat after Sarah helps him understand and he looks over his shoulder...it was damn near scary, and that was perfect. Another as he stands in the runoff tunnel facing down Curve as Curve yells and taunts at him. The setup of that shot...the blue forelight on Perez with that sepia, smog filled background and the look on Perez's (Ashe's) face....very very good. I didn't much care for the character of Judah...however THAT was mostly due to the interference with the cuts to the film by the studio...I understand that his character was more fleshed out in the film that Pope shot and the story that Goyer wrote. In my opinion, this film gets way more hate than it deserves. It seems to me that most of it has nothing to do with the quality or lack thereof of the film itself, but from confused "fans" that never quite understood that this film, this story was of a completely different character than that of Brandon Lee's Eric Draven. The attitude seems to be that because Lee died during the filming of the first film, that the idea, the mythos, and the property of 'The Crow' should die with him. To me, that attitude is asinine and frankly, I don't believe Brandon Lee would have wanted that. I know that Lee was very passionate about OBarr's creation and he was proud to be apart of the project. He was amazing. But I don't think for a second that he would have wanted The Crow to die with him. On that note...think too how Perez must have felt steeping into that role knowing that some fans would have their inevitable, misplaced assumptions. He spoke briefly on his hesitation with the role on the special features on COA. You can tell he had a very humble approach to entering into the film franchise of The Crow because of how great Lee did in the original. That said...I'm really looking forward to the new film with Bill Skarsgard. I think he will do great. No film, no actor needs to "compete" with Proyas's and Brandon Lee's film and performance. It's not something to compete with. It's a piece of art and they own what they did. That can never be taken away. What should also never be taken away however, is this amazing, original story...this amazing concept of The Crow that James Obarr created through his own pain and loss. It's sorrow from a man that turned into a beautiful gift for all of us, and I for one appreciate it greatly.
“There’s no fun, there’s no levity…” yeah. There’s no random reoccurring cop with the catch phrase, “what the crap?!?”, just so that you know that the same cop who was in a car chase with Skank has him crash landing on the hood of his car lol.
This movie was actually was my introduction to The Crow movies. I loved it and for that it holds a special place in my heart. However, nothing will stack up to the Original
@@captcrais101 Personally, I don't find validity in that kind of reasoning if there is still more story to tell. Besides, Salvation and Wicked Prayer are not sequels, story wise.
@@leedaley3404 but who will you cast to play The Crow? Then there is how Hollywood will do the movie. The next Crow director might put Woke politics in the movie. I don’t want a Wokey Crow.
Yeah, this one isn’t good but….. wait until the others. lmao. You should do a first time watching reaction video. We drink every time you roll your eyes
I never know if stories like this are true or not, but I'd heard that Harvey Weinstein personally edited this movie himself to look as close to the original Crow, because he thought that the director's vision for the movie wouldn't translate into good box office sales. There are rough cuts of the movie out there with scenes put back in that make it closer to the director's original vision, but yeah, according to what I've heard, we can thank Weinstein for the mess that this movie became.
David S Goyer wrote the screenplay for this movie and after 25 years of messing up other franchises like Blade, Batman and Terminator, he should stop being involved with movie The guy just keeps on getting a free pass for some reason and I don’t understand why
Would have been totally fine with a retread if they completely stepped away from the original but only going half way and having some truly embarrassing performances crushed this thing.
I feel the same way about Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman with that accent issue. Stupid fans keep attacking me saying things like “How do you know that that is not supposed to be the Amazonian accent?” Fanboys and girls of course will defend and attack to the point of ridiculousness I swear. But yeah I saw this movie when I was a kid. It was confusing too cuz they picked a guy whose physique was just like Brandon Lee
From what I remember I thought this one wasn't great but it wasn't terrible. There's a few thing's I like about this one and there's thing's I don't like about it.
I wanted to much to love this movie. When it came out. I rented it and watched it two or 3 times. I seriously tried to give it a fair shake. I even bought the soundtrack . But since since I've refuse to watch it. I barely even remember anything about it except for the grey orange atmosphere
There are a lot of things you said I agree with, but I think the fact that I saw this b4 the first film helped me enjoy it more than you did. I got no problem with Ash or how he was portrayed. I thought the fight with him and Trini from Power Rangers was really fun. Especially the clip you showed of him dancing on the table then back flipping to the floor just to taunt her. I thought the chase scene where he's going after Iggy Pop was fun. I love the drug Lab Scene with Monkey where he blows up the place. It could just be I see a lot of myself in how he handles his business but I enjoyed him. I didn't like Sara being there. Honestly she could've been any other woman on Earth and you wouldn't know any different until you were told. But that's on Weinstein. I'm sorry you didn't like it, but I enjoy the film. I only wish they focused more on the relationship between Ash and his son
I didn't know that there was a plan for ash to stay alive and be with Sara , just for her to be killed and he's stuck alive and alone , I like the premise , but when the crow character is done getting his revenge I feel like the should return to being dead , I feel like that's the only way he gets to rest and be at piece , so that at the end of the movie he gets to go to heaven and be with the person he lost in the first place , I feel like if a person is made to be the crow , with all the heart ache and sorrow they had , to be able to come back to avenge the people they lost , That they have to die in the end
I gotta say I like Crow city of Angles better than I did the other two sequels. The fact that it was a child murdered this time made the story more sad and heartwrenching! And the pseudo S&M/ drug abuse vibe The villians had made the a little more interesting and scary plus Iggy pop and The Yellow Power Ranger as Villians you gotta love that 😅
I have a soft spot for this movie cause of the look and characters but I want a true director's cut. Fun fact Iggy Pop was supposed to play Funboy in the first movie but couldn't cause of his touring dates so he was brought in for this one.
What never made sense to me was why all the Crows after Eric did the same makeup/look as him. It was based on the mask in their apartment, it was personal to him and Shelly; why'd they all get the same exact look?
The movie was hated by critics it's divided in terms of the fan base the film has a cult following. The movie was hacked to pieces by the studio after filming the original Directors cut had more romance scenes between Sarah and the Crow and more flashbacks to the son and more development of the main villain and why he is obsessed with the occult. The original cut also had a totally different ending more fitting for the darker more sad vibe of this one with the Crow missing his chance to go to the afterlife with his son because he doesn't want to let Sarah die so he chooses to stay but she dies anyway and he ends up trapped on the earth until the end of time and pretty much decides to become a superhero and watch over the city. The problem with a sequel to the Crow is the Crow is really a one-off story about revenge done in a comic book world there isn't really anything you can do to follow that up because the first movie is open and closed. This movie takes place in the future at the time which gives it a more comic book look the acting is mostly fine some have weak moments the visuals are good the ending is a little weak overall as its own stand-alone Crow movie its a decent film but as a sequel to the first, it doesn't work well because the original was never open for sequels.
I watched it when it came out, I thought it was a decent film. The Crow in this one reminded me of an unhinged Jim Morrison. Love Iggy Pop in this too.
You know I'm thinking about how I keep hearing about the remake of The Crow. I just feel some of you should never be remad. But I remember when evil Dead was remade I was like no ooooooo. Then I ended up loving it the crow is my second favorite movie of all time right behind yeah I know tremors. If they remake it I hope they do it good.
For the character of Sarah U didn't mention how it was a different actress portraying her. Mia Kirshner took over the role from Rochelle Davis in the 1st one. Also aside from Thomas Jane Thuy Trang, aka Trini the Yellow Ranger from Power Rangers was in this playing one of the villains.

I remember having mixed feelings when this released. I really wanted this to be different. I enjoyed the soundtrack to this one though. Interesting we almost got a Rob Zombie Crow movie with a female lead. Thankfully that didn't happen as we all know the lead would have been Sherri Moon Zombie.
To be fair. The books don't only have Eric Draven. After Eric's story is done, they introduce another "victim, hero, or crow", and so on and so forth. The studio needs to keep The Crow as the true classic it is, and think outside the box. For example... One of the Crow comics features a female victim. It takes place in the cowboys & Indian days. She's a pregnant Indian woman, who gets gangraped and killed. By a bunch of cowboys. She comes back to avenge the death of her baby. The problem with that book is that there's a time jump, that didn't need to be. But the point remains the same
So I finally watched the sequels (except Wicked Prayer) and I thought they were fine? Of course no where near the first one, but it had everything I love about The Crow in it. As far as his accent I didn't have any issue understanding him but it was pretty think so I can see how it would be hard to. The Sarah x Ashe stuff was rushed but still cute.
GOODBADFLICKS did an amazing video on exactly how Harvey messed it up. This had the potential to be amazing
And it's still not that bad. Only the ending sucked. Ash should've fought Juda and killed him with his hands.

I Quite Liked City Of Angels it’s a Good Comic Book Crow Film Vincent Perez is one of the Best Actors to portray Crow
While not my most favorite, it’s still a good watch and the differences can be… odd, but it’s the kind of movie you would put on while cooking or something
you can see a lot of potential in this movie that was clearly ruined by studio execs.
I have a soft spot for this movie but that be because of nostalgia due the fact that I saw this movie in the theater when it came out.
I actually love this movie flaws aside maybe it’s nostalgia I grew up watching this regularly.
I Like Vincent Perez he’s an Underrated Loved Queen Of The Damned And Crow: City Of Angels
I’ve never understood the hate for the first sequel to any movie being a copy of the first, if the first of any series was good or great why wouldn’t you want more of that. So I don’t hate this one.
I will say the white makeup could have been better
RIP Thuy Trang (Kali).
She was the yellow ranger on power rangers and she was fantastic.
@@jamesmoss3424 Knew that.
@@mower2008 me too and she will be miss.
As someone who suffered through every sequel I hated this movie . Vince Perez doesn't really have a great deal of lines in this and I thought the addition of the yellow power ranger was unnecessary because you never believed she was a bad guy. I got yellow ranger pretending to be a villain
I actually like this one it's not as good as the first though
The poster is quite cool
Honestly I loved this movie I saw it when I was a kid before the original
The crow is the crow entity that guides the spirit back to seek Vengeance to Spirit that comes back is not the crow the crow is the crow
Cool. The characters are still referenced as "The Crow" in pop culture.
This movie was actually was my introduction to The Crow movies. I loved it and for that it holds a special place in my heart. However, nothing will stack up to the Original
I’d never skip this
The Crow: Salvation is my favourite of The Crow sequels. But you may not accept it's technical problems because it was released allegedly unfinished.
The Crow should have been a one and done. It doesn’t need a sequel.
Brandon Lee signed a contract to do two more sequels. Would you still have the same opinion had he been alive to go through with them?
@@leedaley3404 perhaps not. That is the thing. Once Brandon died the plans to do more sequels should have died with him.
@@leedaley3404 is there proof of that?
Haven’t heard too many good things about these sequels and idk if I’ll watch them. I guess all I can say from this point onward is, good luck
Happy Monday!
Salvation is ... Ok , but i like City of Angels better
We need a release of the ppv version.
While the directors cut certainly adds a few minutes more, the rare ppv cut adds much more to it.
David S Goyer wrote the screenplay for this movie and after 25 years of messing up other franchises like Blade, Batman and Terminator, he should stop being involved with movie
The guy just keeps on getting a free pass for some reason and I don’t understand why
I didn't know that there was a plan for ash to stay alive and be with Sara , just for her to be killed and he's stuck alive and alone , I like the premise , but when the crow character is done getting his revenge I feel like the should return to being dead , I feel like that's the only way he gets to rest and be at piece , so that at the end of the movie he gets to go to heaven and be with the person he lost in the first place , I feel like if a person is made to be the crow , with all the heart ache and sorrow they had , to be able to come back to avenge the people they lost , That they have to die in the end
funny thing, a so-called "director's cut" was released on VHS/laserdisc but is literally just an extended and alternate edit of the theatrical version
I gotta say I like Crow city of Angles better than I did the other two sequels.
The fact that it was a child murdered this time made the story more sad and heartwrenching! And the pseudo S&M/ drug abuse vibe
The villians had made the a little more interesting and scary plus Iggy pop and The Yellow Power Ranger as Villians you gotta love that 😅
Hey @Cody Leach do you have the balls to watch and review the crow stairway to heaven series?
I have a soft spot for this movie cause of the look and characters but I want a true director's cut. Fun fact Iggy Pop was supposed to play Funboy in the first movie but couldn't cause of his touring dates so he was brought in for this one.
This is the best sequel. Salvation is ok. Don't get me started on Wicked Prayer.
What never made sense to me was why all the Crows after Eric did the same makeup/look as him. It was based on the mask in their apartment, it was personal to him and Shelly; why'd they all get the same exact look?
I have not seen this movie in years and I remember not enjoying it. Will it ever get a directors cut?
So update the Crow is created by James O'Barr writing and drawing ... this movie 🎥 was just another in a line of comics ...
I’m pretty The Director’s Cut is Better than the Theatrical Cut Of Crow 2, Because David S. Goyer probably had a Better Storyline than theatrical Cut
Unfortunately this is the only viable sequel... If that doesn't say anything I don't what will 🙃
I didn’t hate City of Angels-even the theatrical cut. I did, however, despise the third and fourth movies.
Didn't really matter what actress played her my thoughts had nothing to do with the performance.
To this day, still the only movie I've ever walked out of. Wow.
Are you going to talk about the unmade Rob Zombie sequel Crow 2037? The script is easy to find.
My Favorite Writers/Directors Kurt Wimmer Underrated, David S. Goyer, Len Wiseman Underrated, Jonathan Hensleigh Underrated, Michael Bay, Frank Darabont, Spike Lee Underrated, Neveldine/Taylor Both Underrated, Peter Berg, Darren Lynn Bousman Underrated, Leigh Wannel, F. Gary Gray, David Ayer Underrated, Neil Marshall, Ridley Scott, Rob Cohen Underrated, John Carpenter, James Wan, Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan, Tim Burton, And Joh Woo
But the point remains the same
Still wonder what happened to the original version?
Great review!
here is a hot take...i like city of angels more then the original.
So I finally watched the sequels (except Wicked Prayer) and I thought they were fine? Of course no where near the first one, but it had everything I love about The Crow in it. As far as his accent I didn't have any issue understanding him but it was pretty think so I can see how it would be hard to. The Sarah x Ashe stuff was rushed but still cute.
i personally like this movie alot 🤷♂️
Oh really, get ready for wicked prayer 🤣
I really wish we could see what the original was like, goodbadflicks had a really good video on it.
They did though revisit the franchise with Bill scargards version of the crow .
