My grandfather was a Staff Sergeant who landed on one of these on D-Day. He told me about driving up onto the beach with a snorkel for the engine, with cold water at neck height for him as he drove it.
The job of him and his fellow soldiers (they served under Bradley and then Patton) was to lay telephone wire to keep communications between the command HQs and the frontline troops. This job kept him and his friends on the front lines, and they saw a lot of action, and his halftrack (which he named “The Virgin Mary”) saved his life multiple times. I also wouldn’t be here if not for the M3 halftrack. Very cool to see it on Pawn Stars!
The one my grandfather’s unit rolled with only had a single M2 .50 cal on top, not the AA configuration with 4 barrels you see here. But it kept him safe across Europe from France through a Belgium and the Netherlands and into Germany, and that means it did its job.
