  • This video shows how to back up and restore an iPhone to and from an external drive.
    due to the limitation of local hard drive capacity, backing up to external drive can save you space on your PC.
    with the increase in storage size of iPhones, it is becoming more and more difficult to save everything locally.
    here are the paths of the back up folders created by itunes :
    Windows
    if installed from Microsoft Store:
    C:\Users\(username)\Apple\MobileSync
    Exe
    C: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    MacOS
    ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

    But I don’t have enough storage on my pc so when I do the backup on itunes, it doesn’t complete it, hence it never creates an “Apple” file where the backup would be stored. Can I do an itunes backup straight to the usb external hard drive?

    Thank you, last comment at the end of the video of itunes creating duplicate folder and we need to have twice the size of backup file to get in the restore option, that helped a lot!!

    Change the misleading title to Backup iphone on PC, then copy the backup folder to anywhere you want...

    I think people are looking not to have to backup to the computer first! What's so hard to understand about that

    Hello,
    So I decided to factory reset my phone because I noticed it was going slow. So I decided to back up my iPhone using iTunes on PC. I successfully back it up (took around an hour). The back up is currently stored in the C drive (users>user>apple>mobilesync>backups). However, when I connect my phone and restore it, it appears that I don’t have enough storage and the restore doesn’t go through. Please I need help I’ve been up 3 hours and I don’t know what to do.
    Thank you.

    Does anyone know how to do the opposite? I need to transfer my backup from my external drive to my new iPhone, I really don’t wanna lose the photos in that backup. I have windows and iTunes doesn’t give me an option to do this, it can just restore a backup that has been saved in iTunes. Please help!

    A tip for anyone else watching this that couldn't find the MobileSync folder: On Windows 10 it is hidden by default. Go to the Start menu and type "Hidden" then click "Show hidden files" then next to the line that says "Change settings to show hidden and system files" click "Show settings" on the right. Then under the View tab in Advanced settings go to "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" click on the bubble to the left of that text and select Apply. Your MobileSync folder should now be visible.

    I need my phone to backup to my D: Drive (over 1T space) but it keeps trying to go to C: Drive (very little space). How can I change that so I can do full backup to my PC?

      Yeah Apple don't allow to change in the iTunes app. But in your PC you can change directory to your D Drive.

    If I copied my Backup to another drive, and then format my Windows, reinstall it, is this method gonna work for me?
    I already sold my phone.

      Yes it should work as long as you place the back up folder in the same directory after installing iTunes

      These are backup files that can’t be read directly on the computer . The purpose is to create a back up to be able to restore from later. I can make a video on how to “ Copy” certain files on your computer and be able to view them like “pictures, vids etc “

    You clearly don’t know what backup to an external hdd means; this is simply MOVING your backup to a HDD not actually backing up to a HDD

    What about when your back up exceeds your laptops memory? How do I back up directly to my external?

    • @slimjed9353
      @slimjed9353 4 года назад

      Halal Meatz your OS hard drive where iTunes is installed needs to be more than your phone storage

    • @halalmeatz5644
      @halalmeatz5644 4 года назад +3

      Slim Jed you missed the question but thank you. My iOS is larger than my laptop memory. So I bought a 1 T external. But I could’nt change the file path to save the back up to the external. Found a software, iMazing, that easily does it. Although you have to pay for it to restore. My problem is my Mac and MacBook are considered vintage and apple doesn’t support them or iTunes anymore. So I was forced to use my PC to access iTunes. I think I am quitting apple.

    • @techsavage1015
      @techsavage1015  4 года назад +1

      Halal Meatz. I think the only way to fully restore your phone through iTunes on your computer is that either you would install a new hard drive with more than your phone capacity ( means that you have to install OS and iTunes on the new drive etc, ) or the easiest way would be to borrow or have a friend let you use their computer ( it has to have more storage than your phone ) back up and or restore on their machine and save those files to your external drive.
