What worked for me was mounting the external drive at /Users//Library/Application Support/MobileSync, so it replaces the actual backup folder when it is connected. You can make this happen every time you connect the drive using Automator.

Yours was the only easily found source with explicit instructions on how to do this. Even then, I had to look up some things I was not familiar with, such as what "Terminal" is. Could not have achieved this any other way. I guess Apple does not want to add this functionality to their computers, they want to sell ICloud storage.

Thank you for the VERY informative AND instructive video! I’m 71 and relatively new to the Macbook, so this is going to help me immensely I'm sure.
Unfortunately I have one hurdle to overscome. I had installed the Mac version of my iMazing program before trying to do the backup from the Mac OS Big Sur. Now I can’t get the Mac OS to do the backup. I’ll try and work that out. Hopefully if I uninstall the iMazing, the Mac OS will see the iphone and then do a backup as you explained.
Question, I thought I saw you had a Synology NAS connected on one of your other videos (I recently purchased and connected one also). I wondered if you made these two iPhone backup videos to an external USB because a USB drive is more common but you actually do your backups to your Synology? If so, is the backup to a Synology drive the same except that you designate the shared folder on the Synology instead of the USB? You explained a symbolic link (new to me) folder so I’ll be doing that also.
One more Please? - I will be using my Macbook to backups my iphone and iPad, my wifes' iphone and iPad, and my adult sons' iPad. How do I designate each of the 5 backups from each other to the Mac so it doesn’t overwrite the others when doing the backups? When I connect each different device to my MacBook, will it know and create or update that particular devices previous backup?
Thank You so Very Very much for helping me work through getting this done right. It’s one of the two main reasons I saved and spent all that money to got the Synology.

Thanks for making the video. I tried following the website that came up in a google search and had no luck. The difference is you manually make the directories in terminal. Is this a requirement? And also do you have to make an backup first to local mobile sync or can you create the symlinks and backup first time to an external?

I have an issue/question, I followed all steps and everything seems to have worked fine but when doing the backup, the backup data is heavier than what's on the iPhone. For example, My iPhone has a total of 249Gb used, when backing up to the HardDrive it has already taken 360Gb and it is only halfway done. Why could this be? Any recommendations? Could it be the way the Harddrive is formatted? I use a 1TB Harddrive by WD Elements

Hello, thank you so much for this video. Unfortunately, the Backup folder in MobileSync was not replaced by the old iTunes-backup, rather it just added the old iTunes-backup to the MobileSync folder so I now have both the Backup and old iTunes-backup folders in MobileSync. The shortcut Backup is in MobileSync/Backup...thus the phone is still backing up up to my computer. Can I some how delete all I have done in Terminal and start again. 1) It won't let me back up my iPhone.
    2) Now it also won't let me do a regular TimeMachine Backup of the MacBook saying disk is full although there are 500GB of free space, more than double my MacBook's capacity...
Anyone knows the reasons behind this? Or a safe way to undo the process of the video? I'm definitely not an expert with Terminal...
    Thanks in advance!

I moved my backup back to my local drive so I could restore my phone. When I plug my phone in and try to restore back up, it won’t show up. Any ideas of what’s happening? I desperately need that backup 😭

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can you restore an iphone from a backup on the external drive? Without moving the ios backup's back into the internal drive. Thank you.

I’m stuck at the mkdir part. My MacBook says it can’t find the directory, so I can’t create the folder in my external drive. any help would be great. I have Mac OS 11.5.2.

Hi, I followed all the steps you made but after clicking “back up now”, my MacBook Air (2019, 256GB) gives me an error message “Could not back up the iPad because an error occurred”

Thanks Apple for the very descriptive error. Maybe restart everything and try again? Let me know how it goes. (What iOS and macOS version are you on?)

@@TechCoreDuo All of my devices are running the latest OS (Big Sur 11.1, iOS&iPadOS 14.3). It's probably my iPad Pro (2018, 256BG)'s fault since it has over 100GB of "Other" storage and has iCloud syncing issues.
I restored it from iCloud backup and then successfully backed up to the external hard drive using the method you described. I also backed up my iPhone SE (2020, 128GB). Thank you for your help!

Hi, this worked for me great! but can I delete the old back up? if no there is not point to save space, I have the M1 MacBookair 256gb, thanks for the videos

If I understand correctly, yes you can delete the backup. But if you ever need to restore, you’ll need to send back to the Mac from the hard drive. Meaning you will need that much space available when/if that day comes.

I tried it multiple times, and the only format that worked for me on the M1 is the Exfat, all other formats when I did the back up would not save correctly, and the backup will not be found if/when restoration process. Thank you tho I learned a lot doing this.

Thanks! Question - I followed these instructions, and I can see the backup on my external HD, but when I go to "Restore Backup…" (in Finder when I plug my phone into my Mac) it only shows the backups on my Mac HD, not my external HD. Anyone know how to get to the external HD backups?
