I absolutely found it useful, informative and entertaining. I always get nervous with transportation systems when I get to a new city and you helped calm my nerves a lot. Thank you.
I’m going on the tram for the first time as a 16 year old and I was so nervous about understanding the map! I didn’t get how you chose which tram to get on but now I do, thank you :)
if there's a station with 2 zones, you use the zone that is closer to the city centre as your start/finish point if you are heading in that direction, or the zone furthest away from the centre if you are travelling away from it. For example, whitefield tram stop borders zones 3/4. if you are heading towards the city centre, your ticket only has to cover zones 1, 2 and 3. if you are heading to bury, then your ticket only needs to cover zone 4. hope this helps
This video is absolutely perfect, thank you for taking the time to make it. It told me everything I wanted to know, in a way that was very easy to understand.
Fantastic! Thanks for doing this. I'll be in Manchester for the marathon in April 2023 and didn't want to confuse my brain too much in advance of the run!
I have only used the tram a couple of times and found this very clear explanation to re cap on how to buy a ticket. I did not know about contactless payment. That is very easy. Thanks for a very well presented video
Thank you so much for this comment. It makes me really happy to know that you enjoyed the video :) The contactless option is nice and easy to use, especially if you are in a hurry :)
I am here on holiday and did not understand the contact free option. I touched in with a credit card on Sunday 20/3. Then purchased a day ticket at the machine. I did not therefore touch out. Will I be charged for both? Thank you for the video.
@@laurengelman6730 I think you may be charged a set amount although I did that in London once, I had another ticket already which I used to get back on the overground train, and was not charged. Hopefully you will only get charged for the day ticket.
Hello, I've just checked and if you tap on but don't tap off, you will pay an "incomplete journey fare" of £4.60, which I unfortunately believe means you may be charged for both. I'd check your bank account though to see if that's the case, and I'm sorry to hear that you had a tricky time with the system.
Thankyou very much for the informative and clear video. I’m planning on using Metrolink soon for a journey to Salford Quays, so this is all new to me, but the video makes it easy to follow and understand
Brilliant video and thank you for taking your time out doing this :) A little nervous as it'll be my first time in Manchester and need to use the Tram.
Thanks for the video. Four questions 1-The maximum charge with a contactless card is £4.9 ? I mean, is like London?, that if you do a lot of trips on the same day has a maximum of charge to your credit card. 2-The Metrolink has not names , like "MetroLink A" ó numbers from what i see on the map route. The Trams are associated with the colours of the map? 3-Talking about the "Free Bus" , do i need a card to use that bus or do I simply get on at a bus stop without paying and that's it? 4-From what i see, is cheaper to go to the Airport by train, is that correct? Thanks in advance
Thank you so much for this video! Massive thumbs up. I have been looking into how to get to Cornbrook and then onto the Trafford Centre and back. Forgive me if I've missed something, but how does the tram know that you have paid? We saw you use a machine to buy tickets, but when you board the tram who / what checks your tickets to make sure you have paid? Can you explain in a little more detail how this part works? I live in a town that doesn't have this kind of transport system. Thanks!
Hello and thank you very much for your comment :) There are ticket inspectors that board the tram to check your tickets/contactless card or device that you've paid with. They can board at any point so it's always a great idea to have your ticket handy incase they ask to see it. I hope this helps :)
I'm in manchester from wales, I've never been on a tram before so I want to go on a tram all around the city centre but not get off if that makes sense. I want to eventually get off at the same stop I got on, so I want to go around in a loop, could someone please advise me how I would do that? 🙏
If I want to get a tram in the evening, weekday, from south chadderton to Victoria and stay there for a few hours and then return to chadderton which option is best? Can I purchase the all day off peak ticket and return back to chadderton for free?
Great video. I will use contactless on my first tram journey from piccadilly to IWM. Will it be direct or will i need to change trams on the way? Thanks.
Thank you :) if you get the tram from Picaddily, you want to get the blue line towards Eccles. That will take you straight to MediaCityUK, and will take about 25 minutes. Then from there it's a short 6 or 7 minute walk to IWM. Alternatively you could go to the IWM tram stop, but you would need to switch trams at Deansgate-Castlefield and hop onto the red line towards the trafford centre. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the video. I have a question. I'm going to travel to Manchester in a few days and I'm going to buy an Adult 7-day anytime travelcard. How do I validate the card before each trip?. I can't find that information. Thanks!!
Hello, I assume if you are buying a 7 day travel card, you can just keep it with you, and show any ticket inspectors that require proof of ticket purchase like you would with a regular ticket :) I hope this is helpful, and I hope you have a lovely time in Manchester.
Hello :) when using the tram, there may be a ticket inspector aboard requesting to see your paper ticket for proof of payment. When tapping in or out with a card or contactless device however, you wont get a paper ticket. I do believe that the ticket inspectors can run a check on the card or contactless device you used, to check that you tapped in correctly. As for buses, you can pay aboard using cash or contactless card, and you will get a reciept for any inspections or returns. There are also many kinds of travel cards that you can use for the buses, so if you're looking for that kind of thing, I would check this website for more details: tfgm.com/tickets-and-passes/where-to-buy-bus-tickets
@@rhi-defined I can confirm that if you tap in with a debit/credit card and ticket inspectors do a check, you give them the card you used and they can put it against their devices and check it's been used to tap in. I always wondered about this until it happened to me.
@@blotski Oh thank you, I use the machines to pay so always have a ticket for proof. I read that was the case, but hadn't experienced it first hand, so thank you for confirming that :)
The 1 day travel card gives you unlimited travel throughout your chosen Metrolink zones. Your ticket must be valid in all zones you travel through. You can travel all day, including peak periods (before 9.30am Monday to Friday), as many times as you want for one day, until the last tram - even if that's after midnight. :)

If you forget to touch in, you could be charged the contactless standard fare of £45.00. If you forget to touch out, you will be charged the incomplete journey fare of £4.60. I hope this is helpful.
The Manchester Metro is the worst public transportation system in the whole world. If you want to travel across or within Manchester City Centre then it is easier and quicker to walk. At most stations the arrival display is not visible unless you stand directly underneath it as it is obscured by the roof of the shelter canopies. If there are any engineering works, signage for alternative routes will not exist or be totally confusing. Andy Burnham - any answers to my points?

The M5000 trams that were built by Bombardier are amazing trams used on Manchester Metrolink. Very nice trams in Greater Manchester.
They are nowhere near as good as the original trams. And the colour scheme is terrible.
