Thank you. I've always had females & short coats. Here I am later in life with my first male & first poodle. Wow their hair grows fast!

Hi Sherri, welcome and lol, yes, owning a poodle boy is a whole other level! And not only does their hair grow fast, I'm sure you've found out that it's like "velcro", picking up all sorts of stuff you don't need nor want. But you have got this! Good luck in your Poodle journey together! 🙏

Thank you so much. Our groomers have almost doubled their fees here, making it unaffordable for us after the repercussions of lockdowns. I’m having to DIY everything including my poodles haircuts. I’m trying to learn how to clip him safety. Bless you.

Hi Kayleen! Welcome! Yay, I am a Spoo owner and lover, and yes, you can absolutely do this! Funny enough, as fancy as Poodles may seem, they actually have one of the easiest coats to work with for basic styles. You'll need to invest a bit and follow some basic rules (brush before bathing, be thorough with your bathing and prep work), but after that, you need to figure out what you want for their look, and then I can help steer you in the right direction for the smallest investment in equipment that you would need. You'll save a ton, and yup, Covid changed a lot of industries, including Grooming, and it seems that many people are in your same boat. But you got this, and I am here to help! Thanks for your interest! 🙏

@@GinasGrooming thank you, that is so sweet of you to offer! I had most of the equipment. Now I have a bit more confidence to use it! 😅 Thanks for the extra tips.

been considering which dog breed i could take care of and i'm circling around the coton de tulear, but the grooming is a little bit daunting. these videos makes it seem more approachable, tysm :)

Yay, I'm so happy to hear that! They are absolutely lovely little dogs, but yes, they sit firmly in the 'regular grooming' category! Love that you are researching and educating yourself before making such a big decision! If you haven't run into it on our channel, here's more of a deep dive on the breed and grooming: ruclips.net/video/NZIhoitAVM8/видео.html. Thanks so much for your comment and good luck on your pup journey! 🐾😍

But why do you shave the belly? For the boy, I can imagine it’s to avoid wee getting in the fur, but then I wonder, why do that for the girl?

Hi @Calatheas! Thanks for making me think about this, since it's a really good observation! Now, I can't say I know the historical reasons, but here are my two best conclusions: 1) Most things in Grooming styling are driven by symmetry and anatomical markers, so going up to the bellybutton (added to the fact that the boys need that cleared out) falls in line with that principle. And 2) The coat in that area is really different! It's more sparse and soft, thus more prone to getting twisted and knotted. If you think of a coated puppy like a Shih Tzu, they are growing their hair all over as they mature, but their little bellies are naked for a while, right in the same area that is emulated by a sanitary trim. So, not absolutely sure who decided that this was the right thing to do, but as a Groomer, it absolutely helps our coated pups stay clean and healthy. Very interesting to think about, thanks so much for bringing it up and for joining! 💖

My vet said keeping the belly and part of the chest short helps to keep them cooler in the summer. We live in Florida, so he gets his belly and chest cut pretty short. However, when we lived in Chicago, I would leave it a little bit longer in the winter time. Because he is so close to the ground, it helped keep him warmer in the winter.

My 11 mo old male Maltese pees on his belly and down both legs, tried shaving underbelly but didn’t work. He’s a long haired Maltese and is constantly being groomed, face eyes and private parts cause of urine stains. What can I do? 😢I wipe everytime he potties with every product on the market and still have stains, please help my baby boy😢

Hi Audre! Great question! A few thoughts: 1) He's 11 mo old, and they are just plain messy at that time. He should learn to pee "better" as he matures, 2) Scoop out the sanitary more - a good groomer can do a "comb-over", so that you can't see the shell shaved underneath the carriage, lol, and 3) (please go with me on this one), ask your groomer to leave a bit of hair on the tip of his penis. By leaving a few centimeters of hair right there, you'll direct and focus the stream. I know that sounds crazy (I felt crazy typing it, haha), but physics is physics! It has worked in my past, it may work for you! Thanks so much for your question! 😍
