If you have any Notion tips to share, definitely drop a comment! I'd love to both deepen my own understanding of the tool and have this video be a great resource to others. If you want to give it a shot, you can sign up for Notion here: ntn.so/devduck.
you defs strike me as a Notion man
love that Tabasco shirt btw
hi randy how are you
Wow congrats on the sponsor! I've been looking into Notion recently but your setup has sold it for me. Thanks for the great video!
Notion is the only thing keeping me sane through my degree and I’ve been evangelizing the software to my friends for years now! I’m so glad to hear that you also discovered it and that it works for your purposes just as well as it does mine!
I also love Notion! You recommended it in a video back in the "before time". I've tried other tools as well but Notion has been the best solution. Thanks for recommending this way back when. Cheers!
I watch your videos because I'm an aspiring game developer. I also watch your videos because of your philosophy towards life which I think looks to make your happy, productive and consistent. Very inspirational.
Really great video, I've been using Notion for a while and there is still so much I don't know about it, I really need to take a deep dive into it at some point!
I've been using Notion a lot since last year as well, before that I had all my notes on paper/google notes/trello/random text files. Now I organized everything there and it's been a lot cooler, I'm doing that even with pages I want to see later on and instead of keeping it as a fixed tab on my browser, I just save it there.
Good video!
I've seen Notion being used, but I didn't know how powerful it was! This is going to replace my Notes app, GitKraken Glow Boards, and Todoist and I can't wait. Thanks for sharing your workflow with us! Love the videos.
Looks like I'm going to start using Notion. I've been adequately organized with my project so far, but the organization and filtering features showcased in this video would be extremely useful to have!
Following your last devlog, I was curious about the new tool. I love this video. I've often mixed up tools like Trello, OneNote, Wunderlist (before it was shut down), Notepad++ etc but this video more or less captures the requirements I have for each of the tools I listed. I'd not heard of Notion previously, but it looks pretty neat for both home and work.
Wunderlist wasn't shut down, it's called Microsoft To Do now ;)
@@meffcio Yep. I never switched over to that one.
This helped me start to realize what's possible with Notion. I've been using Trello, but that quickly becomes overwhelming. Thanks :)
I have been looking for something like this in what seems forever, thankyou so much for this video. This is the one stop shop I needed
Thank you notion for the authentic review
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!!
This will not only help me in gamedev, but school life in general!
I'm really considering trying notion myself. I'm really used to Trello for task management and I'm not sure if I like Notion's task board more but I definitely value having my notes, wikis, and dev tasks in one cross-platform application. Was interesting to see your tips and workflow.
Seems useful, might give it a try for both my PhD finishing and my gamedev aspirations.
This was actually super helpful! Because i use Samsung Notes for recipes, Excel for workouts, Google Tasks for my ToDo list, one note for my work notes, and Trello for my coding notes. Yes it is chaos. But this software seems like it can def combine all of these.
Sponsors like these u can’t do anything but respect
Great video. I saw that you were using it in a most recent video of yours, and I was trying to pause it to see how you were organize... and i found this video 🤣Thanks !
Thank you for making this video!
Keen to check notion out as I've also tried a few different note apps and not been satisfied with them. Btw your audio is pretty quiet compared to most videos I watch on here. Had to turn the volume on my PC up a fair bit
Thanks for this video, it was a life saver, I have a trello but did not know the import option for it, at first it was kinda weird for me using notion, but seeing that you can customize colors and card covers (Im a visual motivation person) I think notion has it all for my game dev plans. Thanks notion!
good video. I like your storytelling, and eloquence.
I have started to use Notion whilst developing my game, I find it great that I can have a 'wiki', notes for my game mechanics, aswell as my development board on the same website. Because hopping back from google docs and trello was a pain. Notion is great!
Totally agree, this is a huge plus for me. And the whole database approach makes my "wiki" feel so much more organized than just nested folders in a notes app.
I'm convinced! Gonna try that.
I switched from notion to self hosted Joplin.. not as feature rich as notion with tanles and data linking but I used it for notes and code snippets and I love It
Been using Notion for months, I love it!
Nice video! I love notion, struggle to fully embrace it due to a seeming lack of backup or version history in the free version. I guess I should just pay huh...
Keep up the great work sir.
Wow, looks great. Will definitely try it. Love the customizability
A friend told me about this recently. Might have to give it a shot
Great video. I've seen more and more people using this tool and I'm very tempted to try it out. I guess the sponsorship works 😂
Honestly I started using Notion about two weeks ago and it is just something else entirely. It feels nice, it's super powerful and Latex AND code block support AND it's free? Beautiful
Very cool. Thanks for sharing, I will definately check it out.
I love Notion! Great video!
Great video! Curious why didn’t Obsidian click for you?
I just switched to Obsidian a few months ago and my brain's going "nooo please don't switch again" but those databases are really tempting
I love using Airtable with my team for tracking a database of assets and pipelines
Notion is nice for sure. However the open source Obsidian with Kanban Plugin installed ticks all the boxes for me. I recently switched to it from Evernote and I love it.
@Flipox Like I said, Kanban Plugin. It's not native to Obsidian.
I've always really loved the Kanban style of Trello and Github Teams; especially for web development. But when I started getting into gamedev it turned into a monster of a chore due to all of the tickets needed. You have game logic, art, sounds, scene creation, core features, etc. Wayyyyyy too much, and then I would just end up feeling demotivated by how many tickets I wrote.
It definitely seems like a personal preference, but I honestly found it more freeing to make a small weekly and monthly TODO list with larger goals to accomplish. How I tackled them was up to me depending on what I was motivated to do, as long as I accomplish the larger task. But that definitely is a perk of being a solo dev 😅
Long time process/productivity experimenter here and I hear you. One thing I think Notion is good at (and I'm just trying it out a bit so not an evangelizer) is the filter option. Seems like you could put all your tickets in there in a "capture my thoughts before I forget them" mode, but add a tag that would let you filter in just a small subset at any one time to your active board view. Maybe it's by release, or current month, or easy/low/hard or whatever makes sense to you. Whatever works for you - but what I love about board tools like this is the ability to get things down on an electronic notepad so they aren't forgotten.
@@craino308 That does seem like a useful feature, thanks for sharing 👍 I may try out another kanban tool in the future, just to experiment with how I can more efficiently utilize my time now that I'm comfortable with my current development routine; however, I'm currently using google sheets to keep track of my weekly / monthly checklists and it does an amazing job at keeping track of "capturing my thoughts" due to the simplicity.
The google drive mobile apps are also really convenient for when I'm on the go and inspiration hits; I'll have to look up if Notion and their competitors have decent mobile offerings if I go down that route
@@daemontale Totally agree with you and I'm a huge fan of whatever works for you in the simplest way. Personally I love google tools as well once you commit to their universe. Good luck!
I was really ready to love notion for daily use at work but the slowness of loading pages and just navigation in general made me give up on it. I do still use it for person stuff like recipe lists, trip planning, garden notes, etc, things that I don't need to be constantly context switching in.
Just a heads up that I remembered this video like a year later and it informed my decision to use Notion
Dang. a year later and i'm apparently back again
Great video. I started using Notion about a year ago and it's been great.
In a future video, would you mind detailing your thought process on organizing your projects? I'm always interested in better ways I can organize my thoughts and tasks.
For example, I just have a simple todo->doing->done kanban board for my gamedev projects but I saw in this and a previous video that you also have a board to capture top-level categories. Such as Milestone, Feature Work, Tweaks & Enhancements, Bugs & Issues, & Ideas. I definitely am going to implement a view like this in my project planner.
Can't wait for the next vid!
Awesome video!
This software looks really solid. I used to manage a pretty good sized startup and went through a ton of softwares. Ended up landing on ClickUp for the longest, until I left said project. Now, I personally use Milanote for my uses. It gives me a bit more freedom to do what I want (It fills out almost as a white board, meaning I can move and place things exactly where and how I want it). May just try this out though!
Would you be able to drop some template versions? would love to see how you laid out your family and hobby sections.
“Native” 😬
I switched to Obsidian a while back and is great for me.
But what matters is not the tool but just having somewhere to drop your brain into.
I agree! And in hindsight I should have chatted about what's going on under the hood with electron.
@@DevDuck wait what’s electron
Hi, devduck community I need an advice.
I'm starting developing a RPG and I had this ideia:
It will not have classes so you can use any weapon BUT, in the skill tree you can especialise into different classes so if you especialise in archery your attacks with bows will be stronger.
Or I just create classic game with specific classes...
Look up Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2. They're similarly set up classless games that you can specialize into a specific skill tree or you can branch out and hybridize your approach.
@@TomDonahue Thanks for the feedback.
Have any tips or tutorials where I can learn how to make an action RPG
@@TomDonahue *in godot
Heartbeast has a great tutorial series on RUclips for this!
@@DevDuck Thank you I will check it out
Bro what are those awesome hexagons doing on the wall
My man
Interesting and noted!
Only tool I use is a big text file that I always have open in my code editor. Very easy to keep lists and move stuff about by copy paste. Don't need internet to code anywhere then too.
I’m going to check out notion. Thanks. I use milanote but am willing to check out alternatives
can you do a setup tour? I kind of like that mouse and keyboard and would like to know more about it
I have a setup tour video not too far back!
Notion looks great, for sure, but why doesn't it have recurring tasks (I mean out of the box. I know people code their own)? Am I missing something?
Damn I thought you were talking about the Notion wm for a sec lmao
Do you have any templates to help getting started. Specifically the video planning one would be awesome
Have you considered other options such as Obsidian?
Hey, You've convinced me to try and move my project over from trello to notion. One thing that's got me stumped is on the board page how do I add background colour to my cards? (i.e purple for milestones, yellow for tweaks, red for bugs etc). I know how to apply colour bg to a line of text but can't figure out how to get it to apply to the whole card like you've done here.
I need to get a game done before thinking about what Task manager im using. Curently using Trello as well lol
The Game im working on is semi linear so I dont really need to switch.
Also inside the milestone cards are there stuff inside of it like things you need to do
If I was organising so well my hobby development, I would prefer spend the weekend working.
How did you create the columns on the Landing pages? The ones with underlined headings and icons for each subitem 😊
What monitor do you use?
I really like to use Notion for my daily note taking and to keep track of my personal projects. But my turn off in using Notion is they didnt't encrypt our data which means Notion's employees can read all my personal notes if they want to, and if someday Notion database is breached, the hacker would have all my personal notes and informations :(
Your keyboard mentioned here looks a lot different to the one in the video 😂😂
I am using it too, however the lagginess of the Windows app is making it really annoying
Why don't you have shared pages separate under a "shared" yeah on the left? It is like that for me even though I don't want it to be :/
how did you get youre board cards to be colored?
I personally like Obsidian
What is this Trello you speak of?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣The irony is that I use notion and I couldn’t find anything game dev related to notion and this video popped up😇
which vs code them are you using?
Keep in my that notion has a lot of security flaws, so use it with caution because there's a posibility that someone can get your data and use it maliciously!
No offline support and E2E is a dealbreaker. Hope they add these features soon.
you can check Anytype then
How do you put color to yours cards? can you tell?
Let me be honest, I'm lazy af! Could you share a template with us, please? thanks!
I really wish my ADHD didn't make this out of reach for me. This looks like a really wonderful tool to use.
Bear in mind you can not export a backup of your schedule/pages etc if you're offline. Even if you only want to do a local backup.
For that matter you can't do an import of a local backup if you're not online.
Why? There's no good reason except that they insist the data passes through their servers.
Not cool guys =\
Notion looks really nice and way more powerfull than trello. So if I would come from trello I would switch to it without wasting any thought. But I prefer to have a dedicated Kanban-Board like I get with hacknplan. I know that I can build something similar like that in Notion (I actually did that). But it just doesn't feel the same.
But I think I will keep an eye on it - or may use it for game-jam-projects. But for my not-jam-game-project it doesn't fit.
Would the game be free to play
Hey! :D
Does anyone know how to get that highlighting effect at 7:43 on his Dauphin board? I don’t use Trello, so I don’t have anything to import, but I really want to highlight my board!
In the Group Tab on your board, simply enable Color columns
