I just rode the KTM the other day. Its absolutely amazing. In every way.. power, Ergo's, Throttle response, brakes, literally everything you can think of. Just amazing
Ducati: Better fuel economy, looks a lot bettersounds a lot better, holds its value better, cheaper.does the review really stink? I think they are both right with choosing the ducati
No they are not. Main reason I buy motorbike is riding experience. To buy less fun motorbike because has slightly better fuel economy, looks better (we all have different taste), cost slightly less, and offer less fun/performance at driving is in my book nonsense... And on end, if test from respectable testers, like one brand more and choose/offer another one on basis of cosmetics, slight difference on value, then it looks, mildly speaking, strange to me... Here they didnt test daily commuters, but high performance fun bikes...
I own a smr & I ride a RM in the dirt & have owned two CBR's previously. The smr is the best all around bike I have ever owned. My opinion is that of a off road/sportbike rider. I know that the Ducati is an awesome bike. But what impresses me that the frame on the KTM is also the same for the off road adventure versions short of the handlebars, wheels, etc. 990smr FTW =Urban jungle! And peeps saying that smr is ugly, lol I have gotten more compliments on it than I ever did on my rice rockets.
Why nobody talked about the fact that Ducati is lighter, that it gives more pleasure on the everyday ride thanks to more low-end power? It also sounds better, which is quite important for your daily pleasure???? Nobody talked about the fact that the Ducati costs less in maintenance as you have to do it every 12000 kms and on the KTM it is every 7500 kms???? Nobody told that Ducati drinks less, 5 liters for 100kms and the KTM is more around 8 liters when you just cruise??? Nobody told KTM is drinking oil a lot!!!??? Nobody told that everything is rusty on the KTM after 1 year? That Plastics have the same quality as Fisherprice toy???? I owned both of these bikes, and I am only writing about my own experience!
I own a KTM, 2006, also ridden at winter, there is no rust... Looks better, drinks less fuel, drink less oil? All ok, but i bought my motorbikes for riding, not statistics... and a litre more fuel on a motorbike aint a problem at all... It was a driving test, no need to be angry about that. U do own a nice bike, but there are bikes which are better on road and/or track as yours, live with it. And there are bikes which are better as mine in some aspects etc, i CAN live with that.
Stéphane Swiatlowski I also owned both and could not stand the run ability of the 1100 hyper motor. Ran like a chain saw at 4400 rpm or under. I power commanded and custom tuned it as well. Better than the SDR was the SMT 990. Even more use capability and really one of my favorite bikes. Just my view.
I have ridden both bikes, and actually own the Hyper 1100 EVO SP... and it's fuckin' awesome! I have also owned a Speed Triple, an s1000rr and a zx6r, and the Hyper is by far the most enjoyable bike I have ever ridden... not to mention it's one of the coolest looking bikes on the planet... it's comfortable, super quick, handles extremely well, it's fun at ANY speed, it sounds incredible with the Termi slip-ons, and it's an iconic Ducati... really, what more do you need... Ciao!
I don't know why the sound guys insist on putting a random music track under the riding scenes. The sound of the bike is the subject at hand, not some band music no one came here for.
Amazing what a brown envelope can do - the conclusion is ridiculous! So 2 seconds a lap is nothing!? How many seconds would that be after an entire race!
While you are driving the Duc, you are sitting so far to the front Wheel that you are nearly getting illbecause you are looking at the spinning Wheel. The KTM drives much more precise than the Duc and the Foot - Bars(?) are scratching very soon on the Duc. The Price for her very nice Looking is a mini - Gastank, in the Alps you only can make about 120km before getting dry. And if you are over 1.80m tall, you feel yourself on a Toy - Bike when you drive the Duc. Please forgive my bad english
@Boothzor Before speaking, all u ducati guys should try a 990 ktm. The Ducati gets 2 second for lap from the Ktm. What we are talking about? I can tell u that ktm is pure riding pleasure, pure happyness, pure power and torque. U will not believe in me. So try it. Than we could speak. Ducati is better in only one thing: going to the bar for taking a coffee :D
I can't say I'm surprised with the verdict, yes KTM it's a better bike, but they are 3 major buying motives,1.performance 2. Beauty 3. Comfort .some bikes have it all some just one or 2 characteristics but if we're my money I always consider beauty over function
Funny thing is these bikes are now priced around the same on the used market…($7k -9k) good luck finding a 990 SMR as they only made 250 worldwide😪 the Duc you’ll find allllll day though lol
It's got to be the Italian passion.....Like buying a Ferrari vs a BMW. Both bikes are exclusive for sure. Don't see many folks at all riding them in the states.
Adding to tommasauser 's comment.. 7:30 ''However, for some 'bizarre reason' even though the Ducati is losing out on many aspects, it's still the one I'd actually go for'' Ok. Why? ''It looks better (No it doesn't), it's cheaper (fair enough), it's got an italian sexiness'' (Berlusconi made you say this?) And my favourite 0:41 ''but, which one is best (he's talking about track performance) and also which one is best for the real world?'' 7:43 ''We're not racing the bikes here are we?''
@L4Isoside and the KTM's got it in the looks department too. It's just not a mystical, magical Italian bike that the mags seem to gush over and the Kool Aid sippers seem to swoon for.
They tell you the pros and cons and give their own personal opinion... seems fine to me. Obviously not an in depth review, but it wasn't a review in the first place. Enjoy the eye candy, and be happy with your own personal choice.
Hawokki you go leg straight out on a dirt bike... in the dirt. you can go leg out on a supermoto, but a more effective way to reduce lean angle and get some weight on the turning side of the bike is to have a knee out. you can ride with a knee out on anything: a cruiser, an adv bike, etc. it is not just a sport bike technique, it is a technique to keep as much of your tire's patch on the pavement.
Those bikes don't belong on a racetrack imho. They're more fun on smaller roads and pleasing the inner hooligan. :) Just a fyi. The Hypermotard toolkit sits under the left 'fairing' panel which you can open with a coin so next time a Hypermotard riders comes asking for change you know what time it is. ;o)
You have no point or case at all because you are comparing a 100kg bike to a 190kg one without looking any further then first impression. The 990 SM has the characteristics of a BIG supermoto, It feels light and nimble and gives you the urge to ride it like a dirtbike on 17" slicks. It's even allot of fun on dirtroads! It's the perfect balance between an SM and a nakedbike.
2 seconds a lap is a MASSIVE difference. Really, the KTM can blow past the Ducati giving it a one wheeled salute so ... theres no question, if your mate has a Ducati and you the KTM, you'd show him up at every opportunity and relish it.
Nice review =) Are they any english guys right here? Where does the Steve comes from? Pretty hard to understand his accent. (no moto matter but...). Thanx
@Boothzor owning a 300exc isn't owning a 990 smr. I tried Hm and bought an smT 990 I know what we are talking about, you can only figure it ;) See you on the Alps (if your Ducati can travel up to there without breaking) :D
weird, the ktm was 2 grand cheaper in the states. In my opinion (if you're american) the ktm is the way to go because you have 20 horses more, better fuel capacity, better ergonomics, its cheaper, and the ktm doesn't make mechanics out of riders.
Guess you had a towned down 100hp version. Fullpower 990sm(r)'s go on the back wheel in 3rd gear by just twisting the throttle, and that's on low down power... It's far from heavy and unbalanced aswell, the bikes are known for there light and precise steering.
You're not getting the point. There is an objective part of the review (ie KTM is the 'better' bike) and a subjective part (we LIKE the Ducati more). Think of it like this; The Ducati is a like a supermodel that can't cook, is always late and can't really hold an interesting conversation. But that's not going to stop you from going out with her, is it? ;-)
whatever makes you sleep at night. i'm talkin about being able to do some REAL offroading here... real business... take a ducati and try some extreme offroading and watch it break.... get a KTM and try the same and watch it shine. they are made for that. when u make a bike and call it an adventure bike, make it good enough to perform well offroad as well... nobody does that as well as KTM... now that's a fact... you tell yourself whatever that makes you sleep at night kid.
KTM is faster KTM is better in longway trip KTM is better on the road KTM has better engine But Ducati wins the comparative. I suppose Ducati is better than KTM in 1 thing, the main one : paying review's magazines :D My suggestion: try a KTM, then the world will never be the same foru you! :DDD
Lol and he says the Ducati is better because it's nicer (true), and it is cheaper. But in France, the Ducati 1100 Evo SP costs 14 190€, the KTM 990 SMR 13 170€. So the KTM is cheaper. ;) But they say on websites the KTM s not comfortable, it's expensive, and you don't use it often.
@Boothzor I think the aesthetics is subjective. I'm 190 cm tall. On the ducati it seems i'm riding a trycicle for kids: ridiculous. For the "sports performances" point, i hope u will not meet an smr on twisty roads, cause u will not be able to stay behind it. It's obvious that the track isn't the main field of those kind of bike, but with the ktm u can take your satisfactions...with the ducati u get 2 sec/lap from the ktm :D
@tommasauser ... I just think is an important difference 2 seconds in a short track.... With the name SP, R, performance are important.... Theese are not race machine, ok, but 2 seconds are 2 seconds... The same guy of mcn (you can see the vid on you tube) talk negative of the hypermotard comparing it with multi 1100 and bimota, i think someone say that he must talk better about ducati... i have a multi 1100S and i tryed hyper and ktm sm T.... I can feela big difference in the punch of the k!
Dreadful review.. If the Ducati is better... why? This isnt explained in this video? Im looking at buying a SMR and this didnt help me. Italian sexiness doesnt fly with me.. Plus i think the KTM actually looks better. Does MCN actually read these comments?
OK, so all these guys have proven is that when it comes to choosing between these two bikes, they're posers. I'm glad that i chose my SM R. I've ridden both, and as they said themselves, the KTM is a much better bike. I commute to work and do track days, and its easily the best bike i've ever ridden. Real world useability, performance and, its a KTM!!!!!!!
The ducati requires a more aggresive riding style and more balls, the KTM is easy to handle. the ktm is good for beginner riders while the ducati requires more expirience to have the same laptimes.
@Ataylor0 You missed where I said the KTM looks better (and it does) . Your readin comprehention needs work as does your spelling (it's knob with a K, like K-TM) I really don't care at all about 2D street racing. These guys reviewing do apparently as they made a point to do a track day with both bikes. I've got my bikes and I know which I'd choose between these two.
Ive had a super moto since 07, from day one i beat its fucking ass daily like it owes me money. The only thing thats gone wrong with it is I eat tires every 7k. Love the one's it came with , will never change scorpions zr's stick like glue ! As for the motor , remus pipe, more air , I eat every duck I come along. I give up 150 cc's , 50 lbs, and still , bye bye , I have an R 950 moto, dont tell me it aint pretty !
yea till the motor blows up at 15k, and the ktm will look alot better still running! Got damn dago/s I love the look , piss off , Ill take the runner , still looking for your allen wrench spagetti gargler!
You wasted a day on comparing two bikes. If you're going to say that the ducati is better just for styling, "italian sexxiness" (dafuq) and price (which you can know whitout testing those bikes), besides the ktm is better on being a motorbike...try to spend your time on other things.
I suspect someone in the MCN office knows the band whose music is in this video and many other videos. Their music isn't very good, it stops you from hearing the engine noise and adds nothing to the video. Please stop adding their music to your videos.
ktm has got a better engine, it's faster,,, better on the road, better on track, but u would go for the ducati because of it's NAME and because it LOOKS better? .... no comment! cause i do comment, it will be ugly!
noob fanboys are talking about the ducati but half the things stated are not even facts..."the rear shock rebound is blocked by the airbox" really? you have no idea what your looking at lol
i wouldn't say no to either of these if somebody gave me one, but i wouldn't go out and buy one. Too damn ugly for a start. is it normal for the brake fluid to be bouncing around in the reservoirs like that? I'd have thought it'd lead to air in the brake lines...?
i prefer my lc4, its light and made to be ridden in anger. i smash plenty of supersports believe me, iv had big bikes and theyre just not as quick to turn, i dare say half the manoeuvres required on a supermoto track would be next to impossible. im pretty sure the riders on that track were novice, if that had of been fast group or even inters then those two bikes wouldnt of stood a chance on an open track like that. i guess the 990 probably makes more sense than mine on the road like though, i do miss the speed but at least i stand a chance of keeping my liscence now!lol
@7:44"only 2 sec. down, we are not racing the bikes here are we?"
well.....you wasted a full day comparing the bikes at a race track
I just rode the KTM the other day. Its absolutely amazing. In every way.. power, Ergo's, Throttle response, brakes, literally everything you can think of. Just amazing
KTM:
Better on the road
Better on the track
Best engine
Easy to set the suspension
Best for long distance
Ducati:
Cheaper
Sexier
...this review stinks

I disagree with this. I think the KTM is better looking too!
the conclusion is just a matter of taste - I would go for KTM : )

+Stéphane Swiatlowski +1 The 990 eats fuel...and insurance money. Have not tried the 990 but I *love* the hyper.

can you realy talk about sound with stock exhausts? the KTM sounds realy good with an akra or arrow, even better than the ducati
Stéphane Swiatlowski funny that my 950sm from 2005 doesn’t have rust anywhere. Maybe YOU just can’t take proper care of a bike.
I can understand picking the Duc, it is all they said but I'd still buy the KTM. It rules and KTM knows SM and more pedigree in that dept than Ducati.
Great, long, thorough review, with sights & sounds...
If one day we should get HD, it would be IT...
That Ducati is bloody quick down the straight!!!!
Amazing what a brown envelope can do - the conclusion is ridiculous!

The KTM is better in every way but we are choosing the Ducati because it looks better! What an intelligent choice!😂
you guys are nuts going on the wrong side of the road like that in a blind corner!
Isn't the Hyper supposed to have a tool kit in the front side panel?
Funny thing is these bikes are now priced around the same on the used market…($7k -9k) good luck finding a 990 SMR as they only made 250 worldwide😪 the Duc you’ll find allllll day though lol
that's what you get when adam makes a review. but his recent videos seems to get better.
so you consider your road test tobe going around the same turn 8 times?
I totally agree.
Im sorry but a really bad conclusion! Did a Ducati shop provide both bikes and free track time?
I don't agree, you can't say one bike is easier to handle than the other. It depends on the rider. Different strokes for different folks!
It's got to be the Italian passion.....Like buying a Ferrari vs a BMW. Both bikes are exclusive for sure. Don't see many folks at all riding them in the states.
Looks so stupid to go knee down on a supermoto :D
Adding to tommasauser 's comment..
7:30 ''However, for some 'bizarre reason' even though the Ducati is losing out on many aspects, it's still the one I'd actually go for''

Love those black leathers.
ducati because looks are everything.
Both are exellent motorcycles and at the end, the own taste decides!
i also own a 990smr and its a great all day bike
They tell you the pros and cons and give their own personal opinion... seems fine to me. Obviously not an in depth review, but it wasn't a review in the first place. Enjoy the eye candy, and be happy with your own personal choice.
What is the name of the song?
I would love to know what his track settings for the Ducati hypermotard are. Would be nice to know from a pro rider. Please and thanks!!!!!...
wonder what a hyper wirh lc 1198 motor would make of the KTM?
i a ktm fan but why are guys ride it like a supersports?
because they're supermotos.
I think Oswald meant, they lean in like superbikes. You are not supposed to knee down a supermoto. You go leg straight and heels scraping
Hawokki
you go leg straight out on a dirt bike... in the dirt. you can go leg out on a supermoto, but a more effective way to reduce lean angle and get some weight on the turning side of the bike is to have a knee out.
you can ride with a knee out on anything: a cruiser, an adv bike, etc. it is not just a sport bike technique, it is a technique to keep as much of your tire's patch on the pavement.
you only do that on very tight corners, like on a kart track
Those bikes don't belong on a racetrack imho. They're more fun on smaller roads and pleasing the inner hooligan. :)
Just a fyi. The Hypermotard toolkit sits under the left 'fairing' panel which you can open with a coin so next time a Hypermotard riders comes asking for change you know what time it is. ;o)
So the rattling is not a clutch, but coins in the pocket, to open panel, to get a toolbox to lift a seat? Italian way, for sure ;)
@davethecats No. They're road bikes trying to creep into a new market share. Supermoto is just slang for motard
This just proves that the guy on the Ducati is a better rider...Nuthin else...My money is on the KTM though!!
This is like the Harley review... "The other bikes are all better machines on every metric, but they are not Harley's... so buy the Harley." WTF?
Nice review =)
Are they any english guys right here? Where does the Steve comes from? Pretty hard to understand his accent. (no moto matter but...). Thanx
Ducati is always the best !
@Boothzor owning a 300exc isn't owning a 990 smr.
I tried Hm and bought an smT 990
I know what we are talking about, you can only figure it ;)
See you on the Alps (if your Ducati can travel up to there without breaking) :D
weird, the ktm was 2 grand cheaper in the states.
It's far from heavy and unbalanced aswell, the bikes are known for there light and precise steering.

did he say 100 miles per tank or 200? im hoping 200.
@artonsafari its not all about performance though, you have to actually like the look of something too.
whatever makes you sleep at night. i'm talkin about being able to do some REAL offroading here... real business... take a ducati and try some extreme offroading and watch it break.... get a KTM and try the same and watch it shine. they are made for that. when u make a bike and call it an adventure bike, make it good enough to perform well offroad as well... nobody does that as well as KTM... now that's a fact... you tell yourself whatever that makes you sleep at night kid.

@Boothzor Ure too harsh on the KTM there mate...
Yes, yes, KTM has a better engine blla blla blla... But hypermotard will make you fall in love, will make you love her more and more every day.
@Blaze0303 They are EXACTLY supermoto!!!!! maybe not supermotard but 100% supermoto!
the name of the song??
MCN always seems to favor ducatis.
I would give both my balls to have these bikes
ducati might be great on the road but there is one fact: nobody will beat KTM offroad.... i am not arguing with u i am telling u.
@Boothzor I think the aesthetics is subjective. I'm 190 cm tall. On the ducati it seems i'm riding a trycicle for kids: ridiculous. research where supermoto was born and how it cam about and you will then see my point. I rest my case
@Blaze0303 They're ULTRAMOTOS :D
Nice vid #UN#
because you have to try a hypermotard before....
KTM is better in everything
The KTM looks like a BEAST, but sounds like a Bee ?
And the Ducati Looks like a Bee but sounds like a Beast ?
200 miles and one corner
You wasted a day on comparing two bikes. If you're going to say that the ducati is better just for styling, "italian sexxiness" (dafuq) and price (which you can know whitout testing those bikes), besides the ktm is better on being a motorbike...try to spend your time on other things.
oh btw, KTM's name is superior to ducati!
In what fucking planet??
I think I would go for Ducati only because I wouldn't want to change the oil and adjust the valves ever 10 hrs.
@yfm88 Because they are better. Everyone I talk to says KTM has big problems with engines and stuff like that
@ttraynor1 Me Too. It's Ridiculous, Insane, And i wouldn't commute to work any other way!
wow I cannot understand pilot UK english, damn accenture
noob fanboys are talking about the ducati but half the things stated are not even facts..."the rear shock rebound is blocked by the airbox" really? you have no idea what your looking at lol
What a bizarre conclusion. Why bother riding them?
u still talkin?
i wouldn't say no to either of these if somebody gave me one, but i wouldn't go out and buy one. Too damn ugly for a start.
is it normal for the brake fluid to be bouncing around in the reservoirs like that? I'd have thought it'd lead to air in the brake lines...?
husaberg all the way
What just happened? You rode them like supersports!lol I dont understand these bikes anyway, too slow for this kind of track and too fat for supermoto
i prefer my lc4, its light and made to be ridden in anger. i smash plenty of supersports believe me, iv had big bikes and theyre just not as quick to turn, i dare say half the manoeuvres required on a supermoto track would be next to impossible. im pretty sure the riders on that track were novice, if that had of been fast group or even inters then those two bikes wouldnt of stood a chance on an open track like that. i guess the 990 probably makes more sense than mine on the road like though, i do miss the speed but at least i stand a chance of keeping my liscence now!lol
really good remark indeed. to ride them like supermotos you must be really good at it. very unforgiving for mistakes there.
this is the "ahh" version
ktm is then.
