i recommend doing art in public and bringing business cards. don't have a pot for coins or people to pay you. just be absorbed in say, drawing the façade of a neoclassical feature of a building, for example. i was doing this in a busy, expensive shopping district of london and so many people stopped. its the exotic factor as you mentioned. in a busy, consumeristic location, it strikes people as quaint and charming to sit and make art. i didn't go out specifically to network but i should have! going to make some business cards and sketch in mayfair next time
