Many people talk about how gaming will be stale because of patents, but wouldn't the problem be the lack of innovation itself? If we're using the "throwing ball that shakes to capture creature" patents as an example, would that not lead to more creative ways to 'tame' and interact with creatures? Is our goal to "play Pokémon but better" with a different franchise, or "play a new and unique monster catching game" that gives a reason to continue playing after the first week.
For me I take issue with the fact nintendo didn't make that mechanic first not in 3d open world games. Arceus was nintendos first game to do that and that was after other games like pocketpairs craftopia and palworld was announced at a tokyo game show in june 2021 and had it's first game play trailer released I believe the same day. And nintendo patented those mechanics in December 2021. And if nintendo saw this as a issue after patenting those mechanics after palworld was announced they should have contacted them and said to change it before release. But I truly hate they patented after palworld was announced
Nah because innovation comes from iterative updates to what's come before that's how evolution worked. Imagine people were afraid of making a pokemon game and added their own stories and features specially quality of life improvements. That's the issue they patent so much of the mechanics you can never make a game to improve on the original
I saw an interesting Forbes article the other day saying that, while Western audiences view Pocket Pair as an underdog being crushed by Nintendo, the Japanese audience is much more on Nintendo's side. Obviously the court of law is different than the court of public opinion, but that's probably not a great sign for Pocket Pair in a Japanese court.
I find conversations about legalise and patents generally really boring, speculating on release dates aswell. I understand how in these drought periods news isnt helping to feed the content machine and that must make it difficult. Id be really interested in topics focusing more on the software. Paldea still feels untouched for conversation and ripe for exploring. Discussions around the locales what makes them great/underwhelming and how we would like to improve or add to them, touch on the pokemon diversity in each area, the locals like the ghm leaders and their teams and the rematches and perhaps how they could improve, the activities or lack of. Talk about what it was like seeing these places for the first time. Honestly Paldea could have been a great region to just pick an area and discuss each week. Also id be interested in hearing about your ideas on fantasy play through teams, ie theme teams ideas like all cats, graceful pokemon, derp squad, edgelord squad etc just having fun with cool team themes. Or teams youve already played with that had a theme. Every play through i do i pick a theme and stick to it despite the typings or difficulties of the group and making it work is fun, as a kid i did gym leader teams and gradually broke out into random themes 😊 Just throwing ideas out wildly. Keep at it, still my favourite pokemon podcast by a country mile!
Digimon and other monster franchises: If Pokèmon wins the lawsuit, it would be the end of us. We're on your side Palworld.
