    I just love how Elizabeth is blind to the fact that Mr. Darcy is in love with her! Everything she says, everything she does, he ALWAYS pays close attention to. And when he said, "I do not have the talent of conversing with people so easily.." he whispered it so slowly to her, as if it were one of many secrets he kept hidden to himself. Her response? "Perhaps you should take your Aunt's advice and practice." That hit him hard, but in a good way.

    I love how she thinks that when he comes to stand over her while she plays that he's trying to intimidate her, but later we see when Lizzie visits Pemberley for the second time and meets his sister that Darcy stands over Georgiana while she plays too. I suppose it is an intimate moment between the siblings, their way of being close and Darcy naturally gravitates towards doing the same thing with Lizzie because he wants to be close to her.

    I don't know about anyone else, but when Darcy says, "I do not have the talent for conversing easily with people I have never met before," it changed my entire perception of him. I know he says that (or something similar) in the book and in the 1995 adaptation, but it comes out sounding obnoxious there. Here, it's a personal admission, almost like an apology for his behavior when they first met. And I instantly revised my opinion of him from a pompous jerk to a very sympathetic, thoughtful character. I thought it was the most enlightening line of the entire movie.

    • @whatreallymatters571
      @whatreallymatters571 8 лет назад +292

      This movie changes him and makes him more likeable and lovable in general. In the book and in early adaptations he is a true spoiled jerk who becomes a loving man because of the women he loved. In this version is he still prideful but it isn't so much to a fault and he is actually very sensitive and loving on his own as shown by his relationship with Bingly. Overall for me this was the best version of Darcy.

      anniekski yes this was the best Mr .Darcy, both Matthew and keira did a amazing job as much as the script would allow it. I like the 1995 version better because it's very similar while this 2005 versions misses on the story. Matthew was the best dracy for me because even when he was being a prideful, obnoxious man there was some vulnerability in his eyes, which are so expressive in this flim

      I believe it is more then being shy or insecure. Darcy needs to be careful in who he associates with because of his status in "English Society." I'm sure they are many who would like to make his "aquaintence" for purposes other then friendship. Therefore he needs to extra careful.

      KimPossible Well, if there is one thing we have seen over the past 20 years, it is that Firth plays the same guy, with the same proud and repressed demeanor, and awkward stunted emotions, with the same outwardly directed pained vulnerability (from his anxious and fearful love of a woman, or from stuttering etc) over and over again... He is right up there with Hugh Grant for riding a one trick pony all the way to the bank.
      Now, he does do it exceptionally well, it is just too bad so many people now can only associate it as the one and only way to play Darcy.

      @@chanaberlove8720 If we are to compare the two productions, we have to verify that the rewritten scripts for each are different. The BBC's production is extremely faithful to the book, minus the memorable wet shirt scene. Already the 2005 production takes more freedom of interpretation. That's why Darcy looks more shy than proud. Although I love Mathew's performance in Pride and Prejudice 2005, I still prefer Darcy's characterization of Collin Firth's life-giving script.

All she can think of him at this point, is an arrogant guy, who talked bad about her in the ballroom. In this context his "i didn't know anyone beyond my own party" gave the impression to her "simple, if i don't know them, i don't talk to them". But his sentence after that makes Lizzie realize, what he actually meant and why his behaviour was so weird. 1:28 Elizabeth accuses Darcy of trying to frighten her, but says "she won't be alarmed"
    Sure, Elizabeth, you faltering at 1:25 exactly as Darcy places his hand on the pianoforte has _nothing_ to do with him at all [sarcasm].

    This scene has a lot of little details in it that are truly more enjoyable on subsequent viewings. Mr Collins cutting Lizzy's legs out from under her as she tries to avoid playing: "Come, come Lizzy, her ladyship demands it!" and the stare of death from Lady Catherine at 0:38 that seals the deal.
    I particularly like Lady Catherine declaring: (and I don't remember if this was in the book) "... few people have such great natural taste. If I had ever learned, I would have been a great proficient!" Which pretty much sums up every youtube critic's mindset in a nutshell! (I literally just read a comment on how "Stairway to heaven" was a mediocre song, and the guitar solo not complicated at all from a guy who never bothered to learn a note, let alone try to write a song that would be a classic more that 40 years after it was written!)
    Do classless fans of the movie troll the BBC/A&E series clips, or is it just them coming to the movie clips?

    • @lupina015

      +Neal M I always found it interesting that Lady Catherine asked Lizzy to play AT ALL.
      She told her when they were dining that she only plays a little. Lady Catherine seemed to suspect that Darcy had a thing for Elizabeth (that's also the reason she let Elizabeth sit next to him in the dining room. And the fact that they straight away started to talk to each other, was a confirmation for her) and thus tried to humiliate her in front of him.
      Darcy instantly looks at Elizabeth when she starts playing and turns away hasty when his Aunt asked him how Georgiana is doing. Then his eyes go quickly back to Elizabeth. Charlotte notices this and watches for Lizzies reaction, to find out what's going on between them. But Lady Catherine interrupts her too.
      That scene is so fun to watch ^^

      +Lupina015 - Good observations! In a way, I think Charlotte may have been participating vicariously in Darcy and Elizabeth's courtship, since her own marriage is so lacking-as she told Elizabeth earlier, shortly after her engagement to Mr. Collins, "We can't all afford to be romantic!"

    • @tashazors
      @tashazors 5 лет назад +3

      ThatClassic70sGirl Charlotte had noticed Darcy’s interest in Elizabeth long before she married Mr. Collins. When the group of Bingley, his sisters, brother in-law and Darcy were in Netherfield, Charlotte asked Lizzie on more than one occasion why Darcy stared at her so much. I think at one point she even poked fun at her for possibly making him fall in love with her.
      But in this scene, Charlotte being able to see how Darcy reacts around & towards Elizabeth only solidified her suspicions. She’s an astute friend, that one.

    "Shy Darcy" is great and all, but it downplays the aspect of Darcy that is really proud and insufferable. Part of the point of Darcy is that he is genuinely not a nice person, and Elizabeth gives him a wake-up call that causes him to re-examine his personality. It's not just that he's not good at talking to people, he has very little impulse to try, socially, if those people are "beneath him."
