  • What nicer way to celebrate a birthday than to spend time on the water. I covered several miles of shoreline in Big Lagoon and found a few small fish.

    Happy Birthday!!
When fishing is slow or non existent I blame it on Jupiter and Mars not being in perfect alignment. 😎

Happy Birthday and another great video. Would have liked to have seen the one you said was not a trout.

Thanks Andrew, there were bluefish and mackerel in the area. I got cut off several times fishing live bait.

My family and I are going camping at Big Lagoon SP in a few weeks. We will be fishing from shore around the park. Any tips? My son is 10 so we are mainly interested in just catching some fish. Nothing fancy.

Some areas of the park are still closed from Hurricane Sally almost two years ago, but you can fish from the shore in the boat launch area. Be wary of strong tides and drop offs. There is a bait/tackle shop just west of the park entrance where you can get frozen shrimp, etc. When my son was that age, we fished on the bottom with dead shrimp. He was super happy just catching small pinfish. Across the lagoon from the park is Gulf Islands National Seashore (Perdido Key). You can fish on the gulf side in the surf, and also on the lagoon side in some areas. There is an entrance fee, but I think it is good for a week. The gate opens at 5 am, but is unmanned until about 7 am, so you can just go on in. A lot of people fish at the kayak/canoe launch area, but you have to wade in 3-4 foot water to get to it. If I can help you further, please don't hesitate to ask.

I'm surprised you don't use the CS more often as much work as you've put into it.....Say where are you launching in relation to Scenic Highway and Escambia Bay....

I use it fairly often, my fishing friend does not like the cameras, so no videos. My usual launch is at Big Lagoon State park near Perdido Key, but I also launch at Oriole Beach in Gulf Breeze, Bayou Texar off Scenic Highway, Archie Glover on Escambia Bay, and the city ramp in Milton to fish Blackwater Bay. There are others.
