He sounds a lot like Bob Binnie! Lol I'm learning this year and wish the clubs the wife an I joined had guy's like this who teach with experience and confidence. Great job explaining how you went from 8 to 80. I was watching the video on Bob Binnies RUclips where you said 8 to 80 and I rewinded it a couple of times to make sure that's what I was hearing.👍
Please keep on speaking great job and |I need all the help I can get lol In Canada its hard keeping these little suckers alive @ -40 & I do not care if it is C or F Keep up the great work Seth & Thank you
Great talk Seth! Im going into my 3rd year with 18 hives in kentucky coming out of winter. I havent lost one yet, ive lost some swarms last year though haha. I built some double screens to try this year! Keep throwing out those vids, they are alot of help.
I like that you show several different methods, and explain the pros and cons :) Now, if snow would melt over here so I can start working with my bees, that would be awesome :D
Top notch video Seth, IDK where you were giving this talk, but April swarms ? I had a 4 frame nuc swarm 2-21-23 then my strongest double deep swarmed 2-23-23 with 7-1/2 frames bees and good amounts of drones, she left enough bees and queen cells behind that I was able split the double deep as well, I was there so I caught both swarms.
I love that 8 fr divider board in that 10frame, LOL! I enjoy your videos. Been splitting like crazy. Up to 55 colonies already, gonna break 80 quick! could make a hundred if I push.
Great job Seth. I put cork floaters in the cap & ladder feeders, that way the bees can "ride" the cork floaters versus drowning. Just a thought. It works for me.
What l like the best and its always there and clean is a square piece of plastic mosquito mesh.. put vertical in the feeder. Best ladder they ever had for keeping everything clean. You'll never find a dead bee with it inside
Thanks! Typically I use frame feeders but this year I want to add the traditional jar feeder on the lids of my homemade nuc boxes and this really helped save me a step or two.
Question: I am in Virginia and was told when setting up a bee box to put it in full sun because they like the heat but other beekeepers say keep the beehive in a shady place and/or sheltered in the winter. What’s your best advice for placement - full sun or half-shade?
There’s benefits to both the sun provides you no hive Beatles and a happy hive in our area for the most part I like to find a spot with about half and half that way in mid summer the bees can get a break from the heat they are kinda like people they like to sit in the shade every so often
Use to talk fishing Infront of groups like that.. not easy room full people all staring waiting for you to mess up.. I think that went well for you.. might add to it.. why don't they mate well on pallets .. why do bees get loud queen less things like that details that would make your speech little different than Bobs .. he breaks it up with old stories people love it ..
Hey Seth. When doing a split above a double screen board and adding a mated queen, you can pull that split in two weeks. Correct? I know when you add a queen cell, you like to wait 3 weeks.
You can that’s perfectly ok in warm weather in cold weather we like to wait about three again so she will be hatching her own bees or if you want to move them just move them at night main thing is to keep as much of the field force as possible with the split 👍🏻
@@sethhillABR we split them 4 brood frames strong with at least two capped. That should give us some margin for error. Picking up 30 queens from you guys in morning for these splits.
@@mark-wn5ek actually spoke with Seth at Hive Life, he very smart when it comes to bees and would be a great speaker. His accent is a plus, could listen to him talk forever because of how fun he makes it. But thanks for the reply.
When you add in the plastic foundation frames (undrawn), are you adding any new or additional wax to the foundation (e.g. rolling on melted wax) or do you rely solely on the wax the comes straight from the vendor on the foundation?
if I can get the frames from the manufacturer in a timely fashion ill just rely on there wax job if they have been sitting in my shop for a month or two ill go ahead and apply some wax with a roller
Drop half a dozen little flakes of plastic milk jugs (food grade plastic ) less than 3/4 " circles or small geometric shapes the pieces have to be able to float to the bottom without hangin up hence the size . I use 8 of these cap and ladder feeders and it has totaly TOTALLY eliminated the drowning . I pull a ladder smoke inside the feeder the bees crawl out of the second ladder and the smoke keeps bees fr flying in while filling the feeder once full put the ladder you pulled back in I used to be sick with the dead bees in the ladders Now no dead bees!!! No matter how small the hive !!!
Seth, wouldn't it be better, to split colonies before swarming? So take 2 frames of brood and leave em with 6-7, to prefent them from swarming? The bees will produce a new queen anyways
You can but the swarm cells make better queen than an emergency cells unless your installing queens or grafting your own queen cells then yes you would definitely want to split before they start swarming
Hey seth, i have a question not related to the video. Can u combine two strong colony at the start of honey flow? If yes does that colony make more honey than when they are separated?
it will we call it a colony and a half, because you have two queens producing bees to make honey. Usually this is done by use of a double screen board when you make a spring split. Wait for said split to grow to about 80% of the box if the timing is right and pull the double screen board out, and use a queen excluder directly under the top colony and super between the two colonies. Now if you just want a fast way to re-queen you could remove the queen from the bottom and do the same thing and you have killed two birds with one stone so to speak.
We finally getting some more real Beekeepers who don't sell unnecessary gadgets or products but teach methods. Great job
Thank you 👍🏻
Hi Seth! Saw you 1st on Bobs channel. Just subscribed. Great video brother!

Pretty cool Seth. All the ways to make splits in one video with explanations or rationale for the use of each one. Really appreciate this.
Glad you liked it!
Love to see the entire talk. Great information thank you for sharing. James Australia

I'm gonna set the mood with my queen, tonight! Love ya Seth!
I am as far as you can go southwest and be in Georgia. Would you be willing to talk to our club? This is pure genius
depends on the time of the year in the late fall and winter time absoloutley.
Well done young man!
Good, job! Myself I will be splitting with 2 frames of brood and a matted queen end of April depending.
yessir i like to do it that way if I need nucs on short order ill go three but two is just about right for every situation other than that one.

@@sethhillABR yeah, that harder one.. that you can fold or roll and it takes the shape... lasts forever. Or until it gets lost in the grass
This guys a legend, really looking forward to his RUclips future, really enjoy his video’s
Simple question... what size hole do you use for a good fit on jar lids? You and Bob's lids seem to have a good perfect fit.
If your not worried about painting them a harbor freight 2 3/4 inch hole saw bit is dead nuts but for paint you have to custom order a 71mm hole saw
Thanks! Typically I use frame feeders but this year I want to add the traditional jar feeder on the lids of my homemade nuc boxes and this really helped save me a step or two.
Mr. Ed of Jeff Horcheff bees splits his bees with a fillet knife!😂🤣😜😹🍀
How many hive do you really want???
And how much equipment do you have,???
So a double screen board is economical in brood and bees in the split? Dosent hurt the old colony so mutch. Regards Swedish me ;)

Great information Seth! Where do you find those jar lids and what size hole do i drill, Thanks bee brother!
A 70 mm jar lid mason jar lids work if you use a harbor freight 2 3/4” inch whole saw with no paint it’ll fit perfect

Why do a queen go on a mating voyage when their is drones in the hive
Well the reason for down south is the drones come on sooner sognificantly
Wow, an 8 frame box is smaller than a 10 frame?? Never would have guessed
you would be surprised LOL
