  • At around $180,000, the 2018 Flight Design CTLSi is about as modern as any LSA on the market, with a Rotax 912iS Sport engine, a three-display Dynon glass cockpit,a BRS whole-airplane parachute and a high-end leather interior. But if you're looking to save some money but don't want to sacrifice performance, a preowned late-model CTLSi is worth a look. For this video, Aviation Consumer Editor Larry Anglisano took a close look at the CTLSi models to see if they really can work as efficient traveling airplanes. Turns out they can.

    I own this plane. I put on an e-prop and I’m getting 120 knots at 4.6 gph.
    Beat that.

    Make rudder pedals a little beefier/more mass/asthetically pleasing please. Great video, thank you!🙏🇺🇸👍
    (Love the tundra tire use).

    I like it, but when considering retail price, the Vashon Ranger (also has a cantilever wing design), with like panel, is 114k new. Also has a lower revving, easy to check oil level and more commonly known among A&P's, Continental 100-hp power-plant.

      The ranger has a lot going for it. I would be very interested if it could carry another 100lb like the CTLSi. The LSA market is tough for Tall 200lb guys, there's not much left for passenger + fuel.

    I can't wrap my mind around why LSA are so expensive... More often than not small airplanes are cheaper and perform better

    Looks like a nice plane but 180k strikes me as a huge opportunity for cost optimization in the aviation world because the equivalent mass produced car is a 10k$ product.

    • @DanFrederiksen
      @DanFrederiksen 6 лет назад +1

      And if fiber composite is hugely labor intensive then make it with other materials because fiber composite cars are not significantly lighter than metal if at all. 10% heavier at 1/10 the cost should be a no brainer.

    • @DanFrederiksen
      @DanFrederiksen 6 лет назад

      And if Rotax thinks their ancient tech should cost as much as a car, replace them.

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 6 лет назад +6

      The economies of scale are a thing. Also, certifying aircraft parts in order to ensure that they're going to operate safely (you don't usually end up in a life threatening situation if the engine dies in your car) is a significant part of the cost of an aircraft.
      Composite airframes require less maintenance and inspection because they're not prone to corrosion or fatigue.
      The Rotax 912 iS is one of the most advanced aircraft engines in production, which illustrates how ancient most light aircraft engines are. There are no modern engines in production which could replace the Rotax 912 iS. People can't buy what the market wont offer.

      Dan Frederiksen Rotax 912 iS ancient haha? Multi port fuel injection with full FADEC built by Rockwell Collins. It’s as state-of-the-art as you’ll find in GA.

      The advantage of fiber composites in aircraft isn't just weigh, it's also aerodynamics, there are no fasteners protruding and no offsets at panel joints like in metal aircraft which means a lot less parasitic drag. Also they're very strong for their weight.

    Wow! So cheap! Love how the Lsa market has still been made totally out of reach for most average joes. Talk about major major price gouging in this segment! Don’t expect the rules to change as far as weight, speed and other things with the faa. Too much money to be lost by these corporate moguls.

    The Pipestral Virus beats the CTLSi everywhere except maybe comfort. The Flight Design is very cute looking but is disappointing in speed and that baggage hold panel on strings is really, really cheap looking for a machine costing an eye watering $180,000. The Virus also has more character for a pilot looking for such a thing in an aircraft. If only the CTLS could achieve 140+ knots it would be a winner.

    • @glibsonoran
      @glibsonoran 6 лет назад +2

      With only 500-odd pounds of useful load you're not going to use much anyway

    • @jonathantrunz4482
      @jonathantrunz4482 6 лет назад +1

      If you have something longer but light, skis, small golf bag etc. You can load them from the cockpit by taking out one of the seats, which are very easy to remove. There is a Velcro curtain for the tail boom but something light could go back there without interfering with controls, fishing rods etc. There are several tiedown points in the baggage compartment to help secure items.

    • @jonathantrunz4482
      @jonathantrunz4482 6 лет назад +4

      glibsonoran Leave off 10 gallons of fuel and have 60 more pounds to carry. That is still almost 5 hours of fuel.

    • @gbigsangle3044
      @gbigsangle3044 6 лет назад

      The cargo space (not shown) actually goes down the length of part of the empennage. And it's on both side of the aircraft. But you are limited to a total baggage weight of around 120lbs.

    Some over-modulated audio distortion and bad voice over breath-popping. Those headset mikes are especially bad for recording. “Bad sound makes good video look bad.“ But, thank you for the effort, especially with the body mikes.
