Last year, he was almost sold for around 150m. The amount of people whodve been involved and had a small packet of that is more than sports fans realise. He's barely worth 50m but the English tax and putting him up amongst names like Messi and mbappe helps bump his price

I'm an Arsenal fan and Keown embarrassed me big time calling Kane a national hero. A hero gets the job done and gives the country something to be proud of. Blazing a big penalty over the bar the way he did does not make him a hero to me. A hero is someone like Saka or Rashford who bounced back from a disappointing moment (euros penalty misses) where they were accused of letting the country down yet bounced back to be two of our best players this world cup and had fans demanding they play every game. Mbappe scoring 3 penalties past a keeper who's better at saving them than Lloris really made me rethink Kane's miss. The top players get it done. Penalties can be saved but there's no excuse for not hitting the target.
Would he have missed if he'd been facing a keeper he plays with who has known him for almost 10 years though? Because I'm sure that would have been running through Kane's head too on top of the other pressures. Probably why he missed the target altogether.

Simon Jordan is spot on with his analogy for the simple fact that Harry Kane fluffed his lines because he was asked to take his second penalty in normal time against his club colleague.
Mbappe in a World Cup final at 23 showed what Harry Kane should have done in the QF. He didn’t even get it on target. Those are the moments where unfortunately he’s shown he’s not quite in the absolute upper echelon of top world class forwards. Of course anyone can miss a penalty but look at the careers of Messi and even Mbappe (still only 23) - you can’t compare what Kane has achieved in terms of trophies to them. Kane hasn’t won anything unlike those two and he has had opportunities as well. The Champions league final where he was essentially non existent, World Cup semi where he missed a massive chance to go 2 up against Croatia and now this pen in the QF.

At 19 years of age? It was last year FFS and it cost France. Martinez also got his hand to 2 of 3 penalties he took as well. Kane did bottle it but these margins are incredibly fine and it can happen to anyone in the heat of the moment. Messi has also missed critical penalties in his career too. It happens.
Simon has convinced himself that Kane bottled it, which is a shameful position to argue from as he is doing here, because he simply cannot prove that his position is factually accurate. Both Simon and Martin make valid points here, IMO. Any player can miss or fail at any point, but for me is more of HOW often do you miss/fail.

I think Simon is right, and I thought the exact same watching Mbappe take those pens. Kane is captain, he gets paid quarter of a mil a week, a player whose supposed to be up there with the best of the best, and he buckled under the pressure. It is precisely because Kane is so good that he should not be let of the hook for missing penalties in important moments.

There was a slightly different psychological battle for Kane since he was facing Lloris, who knows him so well. People are treating the penalty like it stopped us from winning. We would have just lost in ET afterwards or on penalties. The fact is we were always playing catch up and were relying on pens to get goals. Maybe we should have scored in open play like France did.

I wouldn't judge Kane just on a penalty miss. If anything blame Southgate for asking his most prolific striker to also be the playmaker and defender. Mbappe does virtually nothing when France doesn't have possession but is lethal when they attack.

My estimation of Martin Keown as a man has plummeted since joining TalkSport. I thought that he was a true leader of men, after all he was in one of the greatest footballing sides in British football history. Yet here, he talks like a fucking wet lettuce. It's an absolute disgrace

As harsh as Simon makes it sound he is right. When you are a leader like Kane is those moments are what you are needed for. When the goalkeeper makes a brilliant save that's life he guessed correct and saved it. Kicking it like a Rugby conversion is another story. Empathy and sympathy for those earning 250k a week and only want praise and no criticism.

Let’s not forget that Harry Kane is an outstanding player who’s scored nearly 200 PL goals for Spurs. We all see that Mbappe is a level above with him delivering in the big moment and Kane doesn’t but we gotta remember that every player is only human at the end of the day. misses can happen

Its an England problem. Netherlands have a similar problem, they are also terrible at penalties. Germany & Argentina are awesome. Some national teams just have superior mental fortitude in critical moments which gets them over the line.
Anyone can miss a penalty though and Keown gave him perfect examples
1) Mbappe wasn't 19, this was just last year lol he was 22
2) Messi has missed important penalties
3) Ronaldo has missed important penalties
4) Maradona has missed important penalties. It happens.

20 years ago belgium would have overachieved, 30 years ago spain you be surprised if they made it out the group stage. 10 years ago, england started welbeck, cleverley, young, glen johnson, parker every game. the expectation is adjusted accordingly based on what you have in hand. if southgate had squad from 12 years ago, he wouldnt even qualify for world cup.

So Keown didn’t like hearing criticism from Jordan about his “hero” Kane, and after Jordan answers Keowns attacks, he attacks Jordan personally. When you attack someone on a personal level, you’ve lost the argument.
Simon is correct, he fair on praise and also the bad , kane is decent player not world class , he dnt do it against bigger sides. The fact he got so many goals for England and Club is cuz no other forward or should say mangers over use kane. Southgate should of used other strikers in friendlies. Vardy stopped playing for England cuz he knew kane one 1st choice. I dnt blame him am sure others will do the same. Grealish only plays cuz media pressued Southgate too play him. Southgate has his favourites.
