    The monstrous clamping pressure is indeed great -- performed beautifully to produce seamless joints on a 48" wide, 2" thick hardwood table I recently built. Problem is, that amount of clamping pressure exceeds the material strength of the metal centering device and even the acme screws used in the clamp. All of the cast iron pads on my clamps are now cupped, and the acme screws on two of the clamps are bent such that I can't fully unthread them. The clamps are still usable for now, but I'm worried about continued deformation of the hardware going forward. I'm surprised they did not catch this during product testing and adjust accordingly. Furthermore, the hole pattern on the 50" extended bars are not mirrored (which I don't think they mention in the manual) -- as long as you're paying attention this is not a problem, but the first time I used them I got a surprise when I tried to tighten them up and realized I had to reverse one of the bars so that they both lined up. I also think there is too much space between the holes on the 50" extensions. I have found that on maybe one out of every three glue ups I have had to insert spacers between the pads and the stock to reach the material. When you are using these clamps alone they are fairly easy to set up, but if you use in combination with other clamps, where the stock is not resting directly on the Clampzilla bars (but rather is elevated above it by the higher plane of the other clamps), they are a freaking nightmare to engage -- to the point where it is better done as a two man job so as not to overrun the open time of your adhesive. The clamps are also a PITA to store with all the hardware attached unless you have ample space, as opposed to many of us who use the leftover tight spaces in the shop for clamp storage -- so I have to disassemble them whenever they are not in use, and spend about 15 minutes reassembling them when I use them again.

    Now this is a solution that makes sense both economically and practically. Looks like they engineered all the right things into them, especially the front and back pads...really GENIUS. I have both the KRDR from Slovenia and the Frontline clamps and both are ok but nothing like whats being shown here and both of those are FAR more expensive . I will be ordering!!!!!

    So now here is a question. I love the idea of not having to mill everything when putting together a top. But, whats happens when you take those warped, off the rack boards, glue them together and then take them out of the clamps. Will the stress from the twisted boards eventually rip it apart? By the way, as awesome as they are, you have pretty much made them cost prohibitive to all but they most wealthy woodshop owner. I realize you have to make back the research investment but you will sell more quantity by bringing down the price.

    I ordered the 4 pack of 38" clamps. After I placed my order, I called Woodpeckers to see if the 38"extension rails could be replaced (swapped) with the 50" rails. I was told that only the 38" system is sold with the package and clamp mechanisms. So, I will have to invest another $240 to gain the additional clamping width on my four clamps. The 50" rails were only made an option after the "One Time Tool" sale was published.The 50" option would give me a lot more versatility for large table tops. I have purchased a number of Woodpecker products and feel the option of either 38" or 50" rails certainly should be available to their customers for a smaller additional price. Note: I was also informed that the 50" rails have a larger cross section measurement as this additional strength is required to achieve flatness on a large width. I would appreciate if Woodpeckers would include more information related to dimensions in their advertising. I must admit, their technical support has been very knowledgeable and helpful in answering any of my questions.

    I don’t think many of us would dispute that your company makes some fantastic products. I myself have made several purchases. It’s also a huge plus to me personally that your products are made here in the U.S.. With that said, I more often than not don’t purchase your products. A fair number of us have probably been working wood for a long time. Most of us weren’t born yesterday. I really am not trying to be insulting when I say that the majority of your products are just WAY overpriced. Not a little overpriced and one is left saying, “Yeah, it’s s little out there, but I’m willing to spend the extra because it’s a really well made product and I’m supporting an American company”. The products for the most part are becoming what I call insulting overpriced. Now before anyone gets all pissed off and tells me I can go buy something, somewhere else, I mentioned above that I increasingly do just that. I like supporting American companies but I also believe in a fair profit for a fair product. Either the profit built into some of the products from Woodpeckers is outrageously high or the company isn’t doing a good job of effectively managing R&D, design or production. There is no way in the world that a 4-way clamp is work $130+. I have 4-way clamps that I’ve had for over 25 years and they still work very well and I can promise you I didn’t pay $100 for the four of them all together. Yeah, they’re 25 years old but the rate of inflation isn’t THAT high. I’m a woodworking who buys quality products. Just placed an order today for $922 with Lee Valley and ~$1,200 with Lie-Nielsen. I’m not bragging and I’m not trying to be an ass; I’m just saying if your company would charge a fair price for a fair product, I’d buy from you far more often. I can’t possibly imagine that you wouldn’t actually make more profit in the long run. If you sell 100 items for a $10 profit as opposed to 10 of the same item at a $50 profit, you’d double your profit. I’m sure you’re not only aware of,that but have your reasons for the extreme overpricing of your products. It’s just unfortunate and I personally believe that this type of marketing by American companies is what has contributed to so many consumers purchasing products produced overseas. Personally I’m fortunate to make a pretty good living and it’s not a matter of not being able to afford more of your wonderful tools; I just can’t justify the cost. Again I’ll emphasize that I’m in no way slandering your company. You make incredible tools.

    Without jointing the edges 1st, and if you force-"bring" the edges together, doesn't the stress from the wood later cause separation or other problems the wood expands and contracts?

    • @frankpolanco561
      @frankpolanco561 5 лет назад +3

      I believe the intent of their demonstration was to show you a 'worst case scenario' and to show off the power of the clamps. I'm very confident they understand that you wouldn't do a glue up on the boards from the demonstration. But if they can handle that large of a variance, they could easily handle minor variances.

    Look closely. If you are a woodworker you will see that this particular design of the concept would not be difficult to duplicate. Square tubing, even drilled out stuff is available and drop nose pins and some garden variety flat bar and some cross dowels. The 'H's out of hardwood or ply and treaded rod with 'T' nut and lock nut diy disk handles. Plenty of other diy wood designs of the 4 way concept here on YT, Google/Bing Images. As metal work goes this design is basic off the shelf raw product and is a simple hacksaw cut and bolt together project. Machine shop accuracy , these aren't, is not required. Have some playing card shims and low riser blocks around for custom clamping. Saturday afternoon tool build "I've been saving those sticks for.....". Hit and miss wife diplomacy.
