What a stud he was, so much fun to watch, and the goals he scored. Amazing player. That hattrick when he hit 500 goals, what a game, what a magical performance. Too bad he never got to hoist the Stanley Cup.
Sundin was awesome to watch at times. He was a force when he wanted to be. I wonder what his career would've been like if he stayed with Quebec/Colorado..
hey shannon i am new to hockey so i wonder if you could do a history of nhl like all the stanley cup champions and notable players so i can be introduced to this sport. Thank you
Can you do a career video for Reggie the rifle Leach? He was one of my fathers favourite players growing up. Can’t believe he isn’t in the hall of fame.
Surprised there was no mention on his difficulties with higher management in Quebec, which started in '93. Things got so bad that Sundin decided to stay in Europe and not to report to Quebec. The Nordiques would trade him shortly after in a bid for Wendell Clark hoping to get physically tougher and more aggressive. In the end, it showed the Nordiques were poorly managed.
In Sweden we call him the captains captain. He will always be the captain with the likes of Alfredsson, Zetterberg, Lidström, Norström, Näslund, Forsberg. Toews might be captain fantastic but Sundin is the captains captain.
Sundin haters “he never won the Leafs a cup!” … ask them about Gilmour winning the cup and they go quiet lol Mats is one of the most under rated players in NHL history. If he wasn’t a euro he’d have way more accolades from the old boys club.
Anybody remember a few years after Mats retired the Leafs had him back for a tribute night? At home, Saturday night, coast to coast on HNIC? Against the Habs and the Leafs lost 5-0? Good old Leafs, shitting the bed again. Not long after that fans started throwing their (expensive) sweaters on to the ice.
It's odd that people would dispute if you could win with him as a leader. in Sweden it is viewed the other way around. He was the undisputed captain for the Swedish national team when it was stacked with some of the biggest names in the history of Swedish hockey. Lidström and Alfredsson hade no chance of taking the C.
The first memories I still have of the leafs involve sundin. I don't remember the playoffs but I started being a fan at around when the lockout ended. I have a soft spot for sundin and every swedish player the leafs get, I compare to sundin. Might be a tad unfair but I can't help it.
His final season pro-rated to about 20 goals and 40 assists. Not bad for a guy who was nearing 40 years old or so. He probably had another couple of productive seasons in him.
There are no Finnish hockey fans in their 40s who don't have a love/hate relationship with Sundin. In 1991 World Championships Finland was leading Sweden 4 to 2 with less than minute to go. Sundin scored twice and the game ended 4 to 4. What made it more bitter was that Kenta Nilsson did exactly the same thing in the 80s.
@@klompsauce They must not have been around for the rivalry. Although even though I was around for it I don't dislike the Avalanche anymore. That era has passed and the teams are very different now. Hard to argue Sundin wasn't a great player. One player can't win the cup on his own, you need a team. I think he stepped up in the playoffs. Sundin never got a cup but I blame the GMs in this case not the player.
I have the same view... It's a damn shame that he never won one, but it is what it is. He played well, dedicated himself to a win. Toronto management is the one to blame.
Sundin was fine with the Canucks. 1 year deal so it only hurt the Owner's wallet... even if it was 2 years it probably would have been fine. Regular season totals maybe not quite as advertised but 28 pts in 41 isn't bad he didn't really come in ready to play either, and he was PPG in the playoffs. Unfortunately that team was not as good as the Blackhawks though. And absolutely he was good enough to win a Stanley cup, lots of great players don't get cups, and you have 4th liners who have won it a ton of times. He's easily one of the greatest Swede's to ever play the game
Didnt Chris Nilan say that the hardest punch he ever got was turning his head around on the ice and accidently hit his head onto Sundins shoulder or elbow, kinda funny tho since Nilan took a few punches in his career
It's funny how people were so concerned if he would be able to captain the Leafs to a Stanley Cup or not. It's not like any of the other captains before or since have been able to for the past half century either.
Sundin is almost as consistent in his point production as Shannon is in his video production.

Honestly, the only reason I remember Sundin playing for the Canucks is because of that shootout winning goal against the Leafs in Toronto. If that had never happened, I would have forgotten about his time in Vancouver too.
I wish he could have played longer tbh
Yeah I forgot also, I guess because it was a forgettable for him in production
Love sundin! My favorite player & leaf of all time! Watching sundin got me started watching hockey!
You are my hero Shannon! My Idol. GoLeafsGo...Capt. Clutch
You win when you're clutch. This guy didn't win squat in the NHL. Overated.
@@gutchmang2430 the fact he didn't win in the NHL is a travesty. That comes with being a Maple Leaf. His playoff stats, at just under a point a game, on Leaf teams in a team sport that were just not going to win. He was always by far the teams leading scorer and best player year in year out for 13 seasons. 11 seasons he Capt. this franchise during the most successful era since the 60's. Gave the city hope! 2 conf. finals, multiple series wins. A consistant playoff existance that is very much lacking in our franchise. Mats didn't just score goals, leads franchise and is 12th in NHL history with 96 GWG . Ranked 2nd all time with 15 OT goals. And my personal fav hockey moment EVER. Game 6 2002 conf. finals, facing elimination ties hockey game with seconds remaining. Even in Vancouver PPG playoff player. That's money! That's clutch! His contributions as a Sweden born European player with a Gold medal and that pesky C on his jersey, speak for themselves... Mats Sundin is Captain Clutch. Even though he won squat in the NHL he will always be my idol. An honourable idol. GOleafsGO
A true legend for the Leafs
I fucking love these career videos during the off-season keeps the channel interesting, and something knew to always watch.
Love matt sundin actually got a chance to meet him here in toronto really great guy. Also as a tampa bay fan I pray one of those boards is a martin st louis career video. my favorite player ever deserves it especially with the story he has ;D and with tampa's success would be good to look at there all time points leader
He played his best hockey with the national team.
My favorite player (ahead of Lidström and Forsberg), glad to see this video :)
Thank you making this career video, Shannon! Glad my constant requests on the live chats finally led this beauty of a career video! On behalf of Leafs Nation, thank you for everything you have done for the hockey community.
One of the most underrated players ever
The damn lockout prevented him from being the first Leafs player to have 1,000 points with the Leafs!!
Just gotta love Gary Buttman, huh?...two lockouts under his tenure with 04-05 and most of 2012-13...
@@SonicSlicer 94-95 was a shortened season too. I think Bettman was the commish then too.
Have you considered making a career video for John LeClair? I feel like he’s highly overlooked and underrated due to being linemates with Lindros.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN! sadly injured against a terrible carolina. cujo seemed to fade the longer playoffs went on, too. he has a lot of amazing round 1 performances and that's about it.
I have played a18 hole round of golf with Mats Sundin in Sweden in the summer of 1994 by accident. We where pared in the same group of greenfee players just randomly. I was a bit shaky on first tee..haha.. Such a Nice down to earth and classy guy! We had a greate round and we talked the whole round and had o lot of fun! He invited me to dinner after the round. I was so chocked so I said no a bit to fast because I had an appointment..stupid me! That should have been quite a memory!
A great person, player and ambassador of the sport. Overall the 2:nd best Swede to play in Toronto of all time. The No 1 Swede in Toronto you ask… Börje Salming of course.!💪
Wasn’t Salming the first European the leafs signed as well?
@@mattwilliams2562 Could be, I’m not sure. He was definitely the first who was really loved by the fans!
@@mattwilliams2562 I think he was. There was this mad man called Harold Ballard that owned the Leafs and did not like european players.
Salming was signed basically because he was in jail at the time
First European-born player to be drafted first overall. One of those kind of players that almost everyone loves. Lots of points, flashy smile, great leader, doesn't break. Damnit, I wanted to see him lift the cup.
one of the biggest class acts in the games history. my favourite player and hero as a young kid. the OT winner in the return to Toronto is one of the most epic moments in league history
The year after Sundin was with Vancouver, Henrik Sedin had his Hart trophy season. I don't think that was a total coincidence.
That's what happened when Sundin played with solid players around him.
Another great video like always. I didn't even remember him playing for any other team other then toronto and vancouver
Fun fact- the entire time Mats played with the Leafs, only a by then near the end Alex Mogilny beat him for the team lead in scoring
I never understood why Quebec had traded him away in '94, remember Sakic and Sundin were amazing together with the Nordiques
hey shannon i am new to hockey so i wonder if you could do a history of nhl like all the stanley cup champions and notable players so i can be introduced to this sport. Thank you
Can you do a career video for Reggie the rifle Leach? He was one of my fathers favourite players growing up. Can’t believe he isn’t in the hall of fame.
The Riverton Rifle. His playoff 76...
What about H. Sedin, Karlsson and Landeskog?
Sundin haters “he never won the Leafs a cup!” … ask them about Gilmour winning the cup and they go quiet lol Mats is one of the most under rated players in NHL history. If he wasn’t a euro he’d have way more accolades from the old boys club.
have you done such list of top players not winning a cup?
Him and cujo are my favorite players ever
I know you get lots of request for career videos, but I might as well ask:
Derian Hatcher
(or maybe even both, Derian & Kevin)
He mentions them briefly here
ruclips.net/video/0jPyNhIj8Fc/видео.html
nuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmbeeeeeeeer 13 matsss sunndiiinnnn!!
He put up all those points without a Lanny MacDonald or a Salming or Turnbull. Imagine if he had those 3 ( like Sittler did)?
I stopped watching hockey for 15 years when Sundin retired... I only just started watching again because I love watching McDavid
The first memories I still have of the leafs involve sundin. I don't remember the playoffs but I started being a fan at around when the lockout ended. I have a soft spot for sundin and every swedish player the leafs get, I compare to sundin. Might be a tad unfair but I can't help it.
To Mats 👏🍻
His final season pro-rated to about 20 goals and 40 assists. Not bad for a guy who was nearing 40 years old or so. He probably had another couple of productive seasons in him.
jeff finger was way later but yeah i remember that news now and again
Looking at Sundin... always solid... Then... Vancouver is really the team where talent, skill, and hope and dreams go to die. 😜
I hope that a video on the career of Daniel Alfredsson will be made.
I wished the Wings could've grabbed him in FA, one of my favourite players
Aw man we could’ve for sure bring him a cup. It would’ve added more depth to our roster at the time
@@saltywingsandavsfan he'd maybe crack the 3rd line on the '02 team 🤣
How are you fans of both those teams???!
@@klompsauce They must not have been around for the rivalry. Although even though I was around for it I don't dislike the Avalanche anymore. That era has passed and the teams are very different now. I'm grateful that both teams existed because that rivalry was the best I've seen in hockey since. LGRW!
@@Adam202 yeah, I hear ya, I was pulling for them this playoff, but with us in the east, we can meet for the Cup in a few years
the leafs were in horrible shape coming out of the lockout of 04-05 cap problems from aging high payed contracts ...and then came john Ferguson jr nightmare ... BRUTAL
Now we talking about one my absolute favourite players ( coming fram Sweden and all 😀 ).
I mean Mats was HUGE and clutch for Sweden in international games.
Probobly the best player we had in tournaments 💪💪💪
Shannon, do you have the career of Peter Stastny somewhere that I missed? Or if you're open to unsolicited requests...🤷🏻♂️
He talks about all three brothers here
ruclips.net/video/0jPyNhIj8Fc/видео.html
Best trade Cliff Fletcher ever made. IMHO, the best Maple Leaf since Borje Salming. I much prefer him to Matthews. Mats was very loyal, and I think Mattews is going to leave at the first opportunity. Another excellent video Mr. Hockey Guy.
As a Leaf fan from the west coast I feel Leaf fans from Ontario don’t give Sundin enough credit.
Scored #500 against my Flames
And it was a beauty.
Sundin never really made a mark in the swedish league but he was a beast for the national team.
he came out of Sweden pretty early IIRC. Played two seasons there, tops.
But you're right, always clutch for the national team
A CANUCKS LEGEND
ONLY SECOND OUR FOREVER CAPTAIN MR. MESSIER
My dad called me mats growing up cause I loved mats sundin
Didnt Chris Nilan say that the hardest punch he ever got was turning his head around on the ice and accidently hit his head onto Sundins shoulder or elbow, kinda funny tho since Nilan took a few punches in his career
Why not mention world cup, olympic feats etc?
It's funny how people were so concerned if he would be able to captain the Leafs to a Stanley Cup or not. It's not like any of the other captains before or since have been able to for the past half century either.
The best maple leaf ever
One of the greatest Leafs ever
