Extreme temperture changes to the T-1000 caused damage on a molecular level to its nanomachines.
It was unable keep control of its morphing/merging ability, and kept glitching when it made contact with various surfaces.
It also kept trying to "refresh" itself several times to correct the issue, which can be seen visually as a wave throughout its body.

Also probably explains why it wanted sarah to call john instead of just doing it itself. It knew it could no longer duplicate her perfectly, and in fact I think in another scene it tries anyways and gets spotted almost immediately.
I think the liquid nitrogen also played a part in the T-1000's glitches as well.
I love how the terminators don't need to talk to each other when they're fighting. When Arnold's arm gets stuck there's no "Get back here! Nooo!" None of that. They know that nothing they say to each other matters and there's no need for it. They're not going to negotiate or anything and there's no need to trick each other.
one thing I'm wondering is what happened to what was left of that arm?

They can't know what mechanics are in use because it's really just a hunk of metal to put in a glass to show off a vision. They don't know how to make or use it, the only think they know is the chip, which is more beneficial than a metal arm.
It's almost 30 years old and this film has better FX than modern movies, for shame.

2:04 it's so impressive that they achieved this level of CGI quality in 1991. It holds up perfectly today.

That's James Cameron for ya. The guy is a total perfectionist. Probably the same reason why those Avatar sequels are, ehm, a bit delayed.
A lot of the effects are real and then merged with some cgi which way they appear better
Might sound crazy but the CGI used in this film was minimal. 5 minutes of it in the entire film. I read somewhere
During that scene there where he throws him he is actually wearing an all metal suit that is practical. Can see it in the behind the scenes.
1:25 I still get chills whenever I see this scene. The T-800 knows he’s not going to win. But he will stand his ground to the bitter end to protect John. The face of grim determination.
Hold him off for as long as possible so hopefully Sarah can get John away and hopefully out of the steel mill.
Him aiming the gun, eyes squinting, brows furrowed is such an iconic shot. Dude really had the quintessential action hero face back in the 80s-90s
@@dev.1359 Since the deformation make-up protrudes on one side of the face, they made the same protrusion on the other side of the face, so the frown took on the Botox look. Otherwise, he doesn't have such a frown on his undamaged face at the beginning of the movie.

Probably the defining role of his career. Despite not bieng a huge hulking guy like Arnold he gave the T1000 an extremely sinister and threatening vibe. Brilliant actor

Man the flip-around at 2:01 is so perfectly executed I can't believe it. Everything is top notch in this film.
Definitely a badass special effect there. And at 2:05 where his head shifts aside and a new head forms 👌🏿

t2 is an iconic, classic movie that will transcend for many years to come.
Nah it will be forgotten in the next 20 to 30 years. The current generation doesn't care about Terminator movies and the people who grew up with T2 will be old or dead.

@@ojx6020 Looking at the box office numbers for the most recent Terminator movie prove that the general majority public does not care about Terminator movies. Now look at James Bond. That franchise has been around since the 60s and it's most recent movie did quite well.
Hell T2 had a 3D re release a few years ago and it did poorly even by 3D re release standards. Internet message boards and comment sections do not represent majority opinion.
@@jakejoker1988 the most recent terminator movies were trash dude, literal pointless garbage, and nobody wants that.
I always wished they had included these additional shots in the theatrical cut because it shows that, powerful as the T-1000 was, there was a chance of beating it. The novelization went into greater detail about what was happening. The result of all the damage the T-1000 had sustained (all the gunfire, the semi and helicopter explosions, the liquid nitrogen) was that its life cycle and functions were wearing down. It started losing it's ability to control and maintain its structure (the unconscious transformations when touching the railing and floor grates). It was even struggling to process its own state of repair (the silver rippling was the T-1000 manually scanning itself for signs of damage or deformity). What I liked about it was its showing of a glimmer of hope. That eventually, with enough persistence and luck, they could win.
Thank you for sharing that detail. I never heard about that but i always wondered why he does the "scanning" thing and what caused the transformation touching the railing.
Same here, I read the novelizations as a kid, and it really did add to the story. It was also how the T-1000 was caught when it was pretending to be Sarah later on. It was the liquid nitrogen that really caused the breakdown, more so than the physical damage it had sustained prior.

and this is where it gets interesting, I don't hate T3 or T4:Salvation... the idea of a terminator that doesnt know its a terminator is very clever.... (yes they're not T1 or close to T2), but they're enjoyable and rewatchable...

For more observant viewers, I imagine that it would be unnecessary, considering that the T-1000's shirt and pants are mismatched when he reforms.
There are continuity issues in the novelisation, and I also wouldn't assume these extra details were official or what Cameron had in mind. The T1000 we see at the end, aside from being frozen, is still fundamentally unstoppable. If T101 hadn't managed to reboot, it would have won. It smashed 101, crippled Sarah and its only weakness was happening to be above a pool of molten steel. For the entire film, weapons did nothing but slow it down, and it would have recovered in due time from the grenade. These additional shots do nothing to suggest it's weakening or wearing down, for me - or even if it is, not to nearly the extent required for the humans to have any hope of destroying it unaided.
When he said “John you got to go now” I believe he was showing genuine concern and not just programming.
Yeah, he was more than a machine following a programmed mission at this point. He became humanized and is protecting someone he actually cares about. I also like that John didn't want to leave him behind, not because he was scared for himself, but because he didn't want the T-800 to get hurt. It really is heartwarming lol.

I like how this extended scene shows how the liquid nitrogen damaged the T-1000 to the point were he's basically trying to hold himself together, and he does that, but he's losing control of his shape shifting (merging with the handle bar, melting into the floor, etc.). You get the sense that he knows he's on borrowed time and it's like a sense of urgency that he needs to kill John now before he falls apart.

SuCKeRPunCH187 I’m willing to bet that both damaged him in some way. I’d say the nitrogen caused the initial damage but the extreme heat was steadily exasperating said damage to the point of loss of control. My opinion, of course.
@@newavengerxx4428 When he glitch and lose his texture with a bar that travels across him I feel it's the nitrogen. When his hands and feet merge with stuff I think it's the heat. He may have regained his liquid form but he is probably still cold and then touching the hot metal ramp mess his system.

The T-1000 is kinda just the best movie villain ever. It is set up perfectly throughout the film as a truly relentless killing machine. We, as the characters do, fear the presence of this entity. The setup is so effective that by the end of the film, simple shots of the T-1000 casually walking towards our heroes is enough to send our anxiety levels off the scale.
Can't think of many films since 1991 that have managed to achieve this level of pure, primal, fear.

А какова вероятность что эти буквы образуют какой нибудь абзац? А какова вероятность что эти буквы образуют какой нибудь текст? А какова вероятность что эти буквы образуют какую нибудь книгу? Вероятность равна почти нолю.
А ведь двойная спираль днк намного сложнее устроена чем текст на асфальте.

The reason the T-1000 didn't run after our heroes or simply slice off John's head when he was just 10 feet away was probably because it couldn't. Being frozen, shattered, thawed, and reformed has probably damaged the T-1000 to the point that it was struggling just to hold itself together.
I like how the Terminators don't go into a martial arts stance and start throwing punches, they just grab hold of each other and start slamming each other into walls as hard as they can.
Well if you think about it, once single punch from a Terminator can knockout a human or possible kill them. So technically it’s their robotic body that is pure enough to combat a human (unless you’re Captain America or Batman)

I would assume if they knew any open-hand fighting it would all be for fighting against humans. I imagine the vulnerable areas and balance points of a terminator are completely different.

1:13 - 1:20 some of Arnold’s best acting. Usually when he speaks as the T-800, be it in T1 or T2, it’s monotone and robotic as he should be; but in this segment alone, given he’s John’s father figure, he shows genuine emotion and urges John to flee for his life with concern and urgency.

At 00:59 Sarah says it's too hot as Arnold drags them closer to the molten metal. As a machine, the t 800 doesn't feel that but as a human Sarah felt the heat. The detailing is amazing!

I know what that's like. I've been close to huge fires. People may not know how hot it gets sometimes. It doesn't even have to be an unnatural fire. Normal fires can radiate immense heat. But if you have a broad light object, it can be held up to block the direct radiation.

And 2 juggernaut box office toppers that held it for a decade each for 20 years in a row, Titanic and Avatar.

For those that were wondering why the t1000 kept changing camo and phasing in and out.
After it was frozen, shot and thawed out it damaged it's Neuro system causing it to glitch.

What sold me for the T1000 being a machine is not seeing him in his liquid form or morphing.It's that he's always so clean and fresh,like it would always be in it's best human form,while the T800 sweats and grunts like a normal human with him being covered IN a normal human tissue.Gotta love these details.

It's so eerie to not hear a single grunt or "umph" whenever they throw themselves at each other
Good observation but I think the writers would have known that- and let them be "Robots or Cyborgs" with an eerie sense of no grunts or sound as like how "Humans and Animals" posses when in conflict or "Fight or Flight" mode/s
I think if a T-800 who knew a lot about human behavior would probably pick up making sounds of human frustration and struggle.
It makes sense though. They're machines, they don't feel pain, get tired or need to take a breath. Must've been tricky for the actors though unless they removed any such noises post-production.

That moment when arnie reaches back at Robert Patrick, constantly trying to keep him away from John. Perfect.
Everything about this movie was perfect, the background music, special effects, story line, actors, and everything else that comes with it.
Especially the helicopter scene and the m4 full auto mag dump into the t1000,then it just gets better when the truck Jack Knifes and spills it's load of COLD😎
I was 14 when I saw this in the theatre, now at 41, rewatching this scene still makes me sad. Then T800 vs T1000 was truly a classic. As a teen, I wished I had a T800 protecting me. Arnold’s character was hard to let go after it died.... loved this movie.

The fact that the T 1000 looks pissed off. It shows more emotion than most real people.
This scene not only shows how the T-1000 can also be damaged, but it has a great intense-ness about it that really adds to the mood. I wish they had left this in.
Anyone else noticed that the the T-800 legit starts acting more human after his reset. His movements, the way he talks and reacts to certain info and the way he talks to John.
That was the point of it. Skynet built in a physical override to prevent them from developing their own independence. Sarah's line about skynet not wanting them to do too much thinking on their own is great. I don't think the idea has been well explored in the sequels, and the attempts that have been made have caused push back. I didn't mind the Carl Terminator being into drapes or having a family, but the lack of humanity after decades was terrible, especially considering the point you make here.
Usually I don't care about plot holes but Dark Fate's "Carl" Terminator that turned good guy after killing John is wrong in my opinion because "Carl's" chip was never reset like Uncle Bob's did they just wanted Arnold back in Terminator movie is my bet.

A rare misstep for Cameron to delete the scenes of the T-1000 glitching from the final cut. They add a lot of tension, and give the T-1000 a bit of desperation. The shot of his boots is just amazing!
Yes, true, however Jim Cameron has subsequently made more than a few more serious missteps. Producing the last dog of a Terminator film most notably. I really miss 1991.

I remember watching an interview with the director and noticed that the shots with the terminator and the t-1000 fighting, the camer is facing up, almost as if to convey the idea that these two were insanely powerful. I loved that little detail and it really felt like watching two titans slugging it out
3:00 until Terminator 3 was released, I strongly believed that this forgotten severed arm would be what would eventually trigger a sequel, once again.

0:20, 0:47 i wonder why they removed this from the final cut. This was a vital scene to show that the t1000 sustained some sort of damage and its shapeshifting is malfunctioning somehow. It later then leads to john being able to distinguish t1000 from his mom, when the t1000 shapeshifted as her mom but its feet appeared like it mixed up with the steel floor, which is similar to what happened above.
John could distinguish the camouflaged T1000 from his mom only when the T800 shot the T1000, not before it. Hence the scene you mentioned is irrelevant and removed.

James Cameron removed the scene it because showed the t1000 had flaws and was therefore not an unstoppable killing machine.
John could distinguish the T1000-mother and this real mother, by their behavior. At least that was, what I always thought.

The scariest thing about the T-000 is that it only has 3 weaknesses that can destroy it. Extreme heat, extreme cold or acid. Where the other brands of terminators can be destroyed in all kinds of ways.

The T-800 is just so bad ass in every scene in this movie, even when he's vulnerable, I like how they were showing glimpses of the T1000 malfunctioning, as a glimmer of hope this thing can actually die, never saw that in the original release of this film
But not having hope is what keeps me on the edge of my seat. I'd rather think there is no chance in hell, followed by a strong victory. That's make creates the best climax

Please for the love of Gawd, why can't we get movies like this anymore? The pacing, atmosphere, blend of CGI and practical effects, storyline, acting. Perfect. This is really what the art if movie making should be about or at least attempted with an ounce of effort. Independent movies are the only saving grace in cinema now.

That 1001 with his system having bugs should have never been cut from the original. It gives so much context to why he got defeated.

I can believe some of those small scenes with the T-1000 they cut out. Seeing the effects of him glitching because of him getting exposed to the Nitrogen gas tells why is starting breakdown. Even the extended sequence with the CPU chip removal with Linda Hamilton's twin sister on the opposite side of the mirror matching her sister's performance was a nice scene that they shouldn't have removed from the original cut of the film.

The sequence with the removal of the CPU chip with Linda and John and then the mirror reflection is Linda's twin sister matching her sister's performance as Sarah tries to remove the CPU chip. In John Connors's case for Edward Furlong they had a body double for his reflection to match Edward's performance. Linda's Sarah and Edward's John were working on an Arnold Dummie for the CPU removal from his head. Also the dream sequence with Sarah Conner when she is in the park playing with young John Connor is Leslie Hamilton and the young John Connor is played by Linda's real-life son.

@Nikki Necro I agree with you. The mild amount of weakness that it could imply is quickly swifted away by him dominating Arnold in two different battles. We know how unstoppable the T-800 typically is, and he gets beaten to the point of shutting down (luckily with backup rerouted power). Personally, I think it simply gives a bit of character and insight into the T-1000, and perhaps even brings it more into the realm of 'real'. By showing that the deep freeze/thaw process has affected the mimetic polyalloy, it brings it from the realm of 'Walking metal blob man' to 'Hmm, there's actually a computer system and fundamental material processes going on under there'. Which is a big part of the appeal I think of the Terminator series (1/2) - how do these Terminators work, think, and act?
Never mind the spectacular VFX which still hold up by 2021's standards, some of the set pieces here are conceptually very creative. T-1000 melting through the prison bars at Pescadero is still my favourite VFX shot of all time
It’s awesome how as the movie goes on the T-800 became much more human and less of a mindless machine.
At the beginning the T-800 takes John’s orders no matter what, and follows his risky demand(s) to save Sarah.
At the end for the safety of John and Sarah, the T-800 ignores John’s orders to not separate. Later, the T-800 ignores John’s order to stay by putting himself into the steel.
So deep!!!
I remember someone wondering about that (why the T-800's behavior changes) but he hadn't seen the DC version of the movie where showed the chip reset scene.
In a way, so does the T-1000, it becomes more predatory, sadistic.

А теперь представь что у тебя в коробке 3000 (три тысяча) буквенных символов. И представь что ты подкинул все эти буквы в воздух. Упав на асфальт какова вероятность что эти буквы образуют какое нибудь слово? А какова вероятность что эти буквы образуют какое нибудь предложение? А какова вероятность что эти буквы образуют какой нибудь абзац? А какова вероятность что эти буквы образуют какой нибудь текст? А какова вероятность что эти буквы образуют какую нибудь книгу? Вероятность равна почти нолю.
А ведь двойная спираль днк намного сложнее устроена чем текст на асфальте.
Верить в то что там где то сверкнула молния и вот там тоже где то сверкнула молния, а потом произошла химическая реакция и химические элементы бац соединились и образовали сложное химическое вещество, которая вдруг стало бороться за свое сохранение и не просто сохранение, а ещё и воспроизведение себе подобных- это глупо.
Это все равно что будучи археологом ты наткнешься на руины древнего города и первая мысль которая к тебе в голову придет- это что здесь когда то жили люди. Ну, а если твой коллега скажет: "неа, это просто там сверкнула молния и вон там тоже сверкнула молния, а потом началось землетрясение и вот таким образом и образовался этот город". Ты после этого разговора скорее всего попросишь руководство что бы твоего коллегу отстранили от работы в связи с тем что у него поехала крыша.
Так вот предыдущая ситуация еще более нелепая.
Бытует мнение что наша вселенная хаотична. Но я с этим не соглашусь. Я уверен что наша вселенная упорядоченна.
Так что ребята случайностей не бывает. Случайного везения просто нет. Наша вселенная не хаотична, а упорядоченна. Просто ставьте цели и достигайте их. И верьте что у вас тоже может получиться. Не сдавайтесь ребята.

1:16 it's lines like these that make this t800more human. And I kind of wished he didn't have to sacrifice himself in the end.
1:19 a normally operating T800 would never scream, i think this shows that the t800 is basically a human now, who looks after John and worries about him
This scene absolutely should have been kept in the theatrical cut. The glitching in the T1000s apperance is brilliant in terms of storytelling and how far ahead Cameron was thinking in terms of technology and nanomachines. It also strikes a nice balance in terms of the T1000s apparent invincibility versus the possibility the heroes will defeat it. The sound design in this scene is also transcendent. It's brilliant when the T1000 cranks out the T800s shoulder and it helps further humanize the T800 and sell it as the hero character, even at this very late point in the film.
There is one scene later on where John sees two Sarahs. In the theatrical cut he realises who the T-1000 is based on the bond he and his mother have gained over the movie. In the extended version he just looks at the T-1000's glitched feet. I prefer the emotional payoff of the theatrical version.
To me, this added footage just drives home the fact that they didn't stand a chance against the T1000. They got lucky that the cold damaged him or the scenario would have ended much differently. (in context of their reality)
They're also fortunate that their fight ended up in a (functioning) foundry giving them one of the few opportunities to actually finish him off.
Or they could have dialed in for Superman (Clarke Kent), he was the last option, who would have defeated T1000, I would have loved to see the two of them fight, of course, tables would have been turned then, no matter what T1000 did, he would have lost, best he could have done, was get a few metal stabs or grabs in, but Superman would have had fun seeing him struggle, to knock him down.

the best part is the little effects to show he is malfunctioning from all the abuse. his feet mimicing the floor, his hand mimicking the rail, and the little metal flourish of his face like his system is fighting to maintain the cop persona, as it glitches. adds some nice visual clues while helping the heroes in the end.
What I always love about these scene is the fighting choreography, it’s nothing like I’ve seen before, full force grappling, punching, shoving, and amazing cgi effects. It’s Terminator vs Terminator fighting choreographer Jim Cameron at its best!

The special effects on this movie from 1991 is better than most all movies ever from any day. This is one of the greatest movies of all time greatest action movie of all time. Arnold Schwarzenegger is just a great actor not just in this movie but in all his movies

Dark Fate was the Force Awakens for the Terminator films.
When your metallic body starts melting and sticking, and even your camouflage system goes haywire, you know you've picked the wrong place for a fight: this extended scene goes a long way towards explaining the film's finale.
What I like about this fight is how simple and unchoreographed it is. The Terminators don’t use fancy kung fu or drag on for too long like the sequels do. They simply just push and shove each other.

I never notice how powerful this scene was when the terminator yelled at John to go...it showed that he is a true Learning cpu. I think we all should thrive to be like that.

I love how much John cares about the T-800 at this point, his mom had to pry him away because he didn't want to leave him behind. And vice versa, is the T-800 still only carrying out his mission here? Or has he also developed an emotional bond with John?

But when T1000 is already destroyed, thus John is now safe? The T800 did not say "mission accomplished, now I do my own thing" or just shut down... the T800 concluded on its own that it's not over yet because it too is a terminator and has the chip, and it too has to be destroyed. The T800 evolves so much that it's able to not only care for john, it actually thinks what is best for him, how to truly ensure he is safe, even going so far as to choose suicide, for the sake of 'his son'.
such immense character growth... this is truly the heroic tale of the terminator.
