This is outside the Tilbury Hotel in Wooloomooloo. Glimpses of the Finger Wharf can be seen in the background. There were many wharfies and tradesmen from the nearby wharves and Naval Dockyards rehydrating after a hard day's work. As a 10 -11-year-old paperboy, I used to sell newspapers in the four pubs in the area in 1972-73 (Dockyard, pubs, the roadway, home deliveries. The drunks used to help me sell my papers in the pub to the rowdy patrons. They didn't spare the tips neither. In 1973 I got around $5 in tips per day and $15 from commission per week from paper/magazine sales working seven days {4 hrs morning and 4 hrs afternoon). $50 earnings per week back then is equivalent to $500, factoring in inflation. Not bad earnings, but I was ripped off, seeing that I worked 56 hrs for it. My brother earned similarly
Great historical comment Robert. Love to read comments like yours. You were selling papers when l was born mate. When l was in my teens, l use to do the local paper and catalog rounds while my mate sold the newspaper down the local pub. It was a great time.
Fascinating. As a 36yr old bloke in the UK in 2022 I can say that we wouldn't have any issues relating with these guys. Imagine explaining today's hyperinflation to them and how the cost of living is extortionate all the while sinking as many pints as you can!
Back then I was a child. I remember passing pubs with these men drinking there and finding them terrifying. I can see now why. They were indeed rough as guts.
I started to go to the pub in 1975, it was a great way of life, beer was cheap, i remember it going up from 27 cents, to 33 cents a schooner, you could go to the pub with $2 and drink 6 schooners here on the south coast nsw, the best i can get a schooner for is $5.90 but the average in the clubs is $7.20 with a members discount, the greedy government puts the price up on beer every six months, what a bloody disgrace
I arrived in Oz in 89...a schooner was 1.70 to 1.90 fast forward 32 years you’re looking at $7-10...these blokes really didn’t know how lucky they were...and old Mr Cigarettes...he’d have been paying about 60c a packet of 20s for a decent Australian grown and made cigarette...nowadays 2021 +35 a pack and rising 12% every 6 months for the foreseeable future. Let’s do some math : 1975 10 schooners and 10 smokes = 3.30 + 30 = 3.60 2021 10 schooners and 10 smokes = 80.00 + 17.50 = 97.50 SORRY BOYS...YOU REALLY DON’T NO HOW LUCKY YOU ARE !!
They tried to charge me just over $10 for a schooner on Easter Sunday with public Holliday surcharges factored in, absolute disgrace & the service isn’t nearly as good as it once was
“My names John Downey, whaddya want to know?” *fixes him with what he thinks is a challenging stare* Ah the belligerence of someone who has had a few too many.
It was so obvious that Australia and New Zealand where new countries. I don't mean that in any negative way. From a western way of living to a way that was alien to us, like accents and words and sayings, and certin values. A lot of similarities and some differences .
That is the Tilbury Hotel at Woolloomooloo. You can see Finger Wharf in the background. Its now some of Sydney's most expensive real estate and restraunts. By '75 the area was in decline as a working dock, but there was still industry in the area and working class people. They are pretty much both gone now. The pub still exists as a bit of a gastro-pub, kind of please these blokes wouldn't be seen dead in.
Cowper Wharf Road The Loo...Worked there myself at 5a Cowper Wharf Rd worked for Hogan Strang Wool Dumps there today a parking Station for cars opposite was Commonwealth Government Car Hire Fleets behind it The Stair Well from Victoria St to Cowper Wharf Rd...up the Road Frisco Hotel early opener 5am opens
the cost of grog in our beautiful drunk soked country is to high just to wet the whistle . i payed $50 bux for a sixer of jim beam can's this year in Newcastle i nearly fell over in shoke, and dont get me started about happy hourdo you know just how much they make in that short time its ridiculous. they take advantage of the hard working ozzy puting pubs on just about every corner. at first they sell it cheaply then once they have a hold on you they put the prices up, who do you think payed for most of the sport we watch, back in the mid 80's. wich wasnt a good look for sport so they stoped getting sponsorship for it and they had to withdraw all alcohol payed events, witch didnt go down well with the alcohol drinker's.
Use to work there Wool Dumps 1975 Cowper Wharf Road Right next to the Stairwell from Victoria St to Cowper Wharf Rd opposite Commonwealth Car Fleet Government Fleet Hire Cars
Back then I was a young man with long hair who avoided these types like the plague. They were narrow-minded and ignorant, quick to rubbish anyone who didn't share their limited world-view, and probably a danger to themselves and others on their way home.
Bring back the 33 cents a schooner BLOODY OUTSTANDING 🍺🇦🇺👍

Interesting choice to interview these gents 10 schooners in!
Fascinating. As a 36yr old bloke in the UK in 2022 I can say that we wouldn't have any issues relating with these guys. Imagine explaining today's hyperinflation to them and how the cost of living is extortionate all the while sinking as many pints as you can!

Aussies are the best simple humble humors uncomplicated people Very Gentlemenly 💚 we would probably never get back this Class nowadays.
Imagine teleporting these blokes to 2021 interview them after a couple of hours acclimatizing themselves.
Back then I was a child. I remember passing pubs with these men drinking there and finding them terrifying. I can see now why. They were indeed rough as guts.
Dish these boys up a craft beer and stand well back.

They tried to charge me just over $10 for a schooner on Easter Sunday with public Holliday surcharges factored in, absolute disgrace & the service isn’t nearly as good as it once was
you just gotta love the Aussies, bless them all
The first bloke said he only drinks schooners and he’s holding a can
now they charge 12-15 bucks for a pint at standard pubs, even more at some fancy places
The good old days !
Whoa whoa whoa, you can be a beer baron? My high school guidance counselor never told me that.
The Older Blokes would be X World War 2 guys
Ahh those were the days empty schooner glasses on the sidewalk , was very normal back then lol
"I'll get you beer baron". Homer: "no, you won't".
“My names John Downey, whaddya want to know?” *fixes him with what he thinks is a challenging stare* Ah the belligerence of someone who has had a few too many.
Ask some pissed Aussies if they like paying more for beer... Ok then...
29c for a beer sounds pretty reasonable to me, even for 1975.
They’re all pissed! 🙃
33 cents a schooner...my local charges $12 a pint nowadays.
These old buggers don't know how good they had it. In my day, 33cents gets you bugger all.
Great to have nothing else to worry about
It would be nice if the location could be included in the description!
John Downey had it all figured out, where is he now?
Fascinating demographic. Do you know what time of day this was taken?
Shooting fish in a barrel....a sober ABC employee interviewing semi drunk patrons.
Gotta love the Aussies
drunks were asked if raising beer prices is a good thing, while they had a beer in their hand.
Agree 29c for a middy is too much
They all sound abit tipsy🤣.
This whole video has sweaty palm energy
They had no idea what was coming

John Howard ,increasing the cost of grog and taking away guns, bloody wet blanket...
All those men drinking and getting things off their chest. Now men they sit at home alone and smoke meth .
Looks like They still think the pubs gonna shut at 6pm
Interesting ....but probably some of the worst interviews I've ever seen.
Looks like tv reporting hasn't got any better or worse for a very long time. Clearly it's always been crap.
Not on your life'🍻this hasn't aged well
The peer pressure to conform.
A different time.
Hugh Jackman’s Dad 😆

Labor government now charges you $12 for a schooner in 2024 , how's everyone feeling about that?
$6 for a loaf of bread and 199.5 for petrol.
They didn’t fight hard enough.
Most probably drove home afterwards
Back in the day when people trusted the government. *Wake up Australia!*
Love my aussie brothers... beer rugby league and the rest of the world can piss off
Back then I was a young man with long hair who avoided these types like the plague. They were narrow-minded and ignorant, quick to rubbish anyone who didn't share their limited world-view, and probably a danger to themselves and others on their way home.
This reporter was a bit clumsy.
Crikey .. Aussie men
Arh the patriotism...🤣

Labor voters complaining about grog prices going up..
Nonsense talk from Alcoholism
