Wilma Rudolph was one of the greatest female athletes in history, not USA history, history period. It was surprising that just Johnny Carson knew her. She won the 100 and 220 easily and her anchor leg in the 440 relay was amazing. Take a look at these races if you can. It was great to have Betty White and Johnny Carson on the panel. Classy Kitty as usual. Thanks for the video.
@@feralbluee I must be one of the few who cannot tolerate Kitty Carisle; I find her condescending and, invariably, full of what she thinks she knows. I was glad to see her called on what she called "THE Hermitage" since there are several! Don't think she has "class" because she's a snob.
R.I.P. to Fran Bennett who is contestant #2 and a imposter for Wilam Rudolph. A fine actress who has been in many plays, movies, and TV shows over the years .
This was such a treat to watch Wilma Rudolph on this show! I was born in 1959 so I was too young to re remember her from the 1960 Olympics, bit I heard about her while I was growing up and she left quite a positive impression. I guessed which one she was by listening to her speak & her demeanor. Because she grew up in the South during the 1st 50 years of the last century, sadly African Americans had to be very careful looking white people in the eye while speaking as well as having an assertive personality with white people was also a dangerous ordeal.by listening to the other two contestants speak I could tell they were both New Yorkers right away by their assertive and getting straight to the point on their answers. Sad how African Americans have been treated in this country. Same with the American Indian.
Johnny Carson’s barber pick. that joke about #1 getting more laughs than i did - and his whole delivery and deadpan expression was really sooo Carson. But, the hand going up to his face was pure Jack Benny - (even to the deadpan look) - whom he must have admired quite a lot. :) 😋🌷 the barber was a complete surprise to me!! and so was the guy who was in Russia!! 😋🌷
I love this episode. First I am still a big fan of Wilma Rudolph and her story and second one of the impostor's is an actress name #FranBennett. She is one of those actress that has been in everything, but you my not know here name.
Didn't know her name the One in the Middle but Recognized her as a Actress Right Off and you are Right She has been around for a long Time from TV's Roots to Playing Mother Jefferson on the Live TV Reboot have Seen her in many Shows and Movies over the Years Brilliant Actress.
I thought it was bit shit that an athlete couldn't take the money for appearing on the show. Back in the days when Olympians did it for the country not for the money as such. If Ms Rudolph was running these days she would be worth a fortune thanks for the posting
It was amateur sport. I remember the days when it was still considered amateur sport and you couldn't get payment. All the athletes appearing on these shows did the same.
What is truly absurd is, 3 out of the 4 people asking the questions were not able to recognize the 1960 Olympic Champion who'd won THREE GOLD MEDALS IN THE ROME OLYMPICS and was the FIRST WOMAN to do so, was trained in, born in, and represented the United States of America. THIS SHOW WAS IN 1960! WILMA RUDOLPH WON HER MEDALS IN.......... 1960!!!
It’s not absurd that they couldn’t recognize her for several reasons: A. The resolution on your typical televisions in 1960 was terrible. B. In 1960, the TV networks did NOT spend hours and hours covering each and every Olympic event while doing personal profiles on every gold medal winner. Most people would read about these events in the newspaper. C. Due to the Rome-US time difference, most Olympic events would have occurred in the morning or afternoon. Most people would be at work and unable to watch. D. The daily news at that time consisted of 30 minutes of local news and 30 minutes of national news. 24/7 news was radio only. If there was film of her victory on TV, it probably would’ve been a 30 second story. E. Back then track and field was just as obscure as any other amateur sport. Could you recognize or can you even name one American who won a gold medal in wrestling or target shooting from the Tokyo Olympics that just finished? Now do you understand why people did not recognize her? I’m surprised no one is claiming that white people back them couldn’t tell black people apart. Or was Johnny Carson the only non-racist there who could tell them apart, which is why he dropped out of the game. Finally, I know who Wilma Rudolph is and i know that I’ve seen Olympic documentaries about her struggle and triumph. Yet, I couldn’t remember which face was hers. Stop judging people from the past by using the standards of today, it’s just dumb.
Fans of Betty White (and who isn't?) might want to check out this playlist of all the eps of WML and TTTT she appeared on. All her WML shows are already posted, but there are new TTTT shows being added all the time! ruclips.net/p/PLqsaqh5sqUxprN4spg9FDonrj8RVa8udE
Oh wow in the first game I thought I knew who Wilma Rudolph because I remember her on the Postal stamp -- I thought it was number one -- clearly I was wrong. As a side note I like how Bud caught himself when he said that she won three gold stars (2:05) then later changed it to three gold medals.
in the biz, you either work nights with two shows on Wed. and Sat. or you were rehearsing or filming all day. who’d watch or read the sports news?! :) my dad was up on world and theatre events, but not sports. some theatre or film people are, but they have a big interest in it to begin with. and the world news was only on at 7 p.m. back then - for half an hour. not all day long with no internet at all!! keep safe! :) 🌷🙃
Does anyone know why Carson in the second round disqualified himself for knowing who the real Wilma Rudolph was ? Ms. Rudolph as I think Ms. Carlisle would surmise did not have the muscular legs one would associate with a world class athlete of that type , but appears from the old tape to clearly more muscular in the core and shoulders. In fact I saw a pic of her winning the heat at some event , perhaps the Olympics and the people running behind were more muscular in their legs . She looked graceful and feminine , skinny legs and all .
Yes, really. It was a time when "oriental" wasn't a racial slur. Well, it still isn't, but you get my point -- when everyone wasn't desperately searching for something to be offend by. Also, boys and girls knew the difference between boys and girls.
@@kenbrown438 I agree; Polly is unpredictable and therefore entertaining, but she may well be an acquired taste -- it took me a few episodes to warm up to her.

I wish that Wilma would have gotten the stump. Oh well.
Wilma Rudolph was a true American hero; I just love how reverent and gracious Kitty is toward her; class personified
What the hell are you talking about? She picked woman # 1 because said hat "she looked like a champion". What does that even mean?
