First of all: yeah you were right at the end, BYOB stands for Bring your own bombs.
2: The other signer maybe started as a « backup » singer in the band, but with each album he had more presence, and is legit a « 2nd » signer. In their last albums he even have songs where he is the only singer, or even having Serj serving as backup for him
3rd: You should really react to their song Soldier side (not the intro track from the album mesmerize, but the full song from the album hypnotise (which are by the way a 2 albums concept) ) . The way they sing together in this song is crazy good

Actually, even if he isn't the main singer, his importance for the band can't be overstated. Daron Malakian composed most of the band's music.

The guitarist Daron had a project he fronted called Scars On Broadway.

Both of these songs - absolutely touching up to tears.
The second one ("Lives") could be hard to fully understand from the starting, but the story behind it's crucial to understand why each of SOAD squad member could be so heavily involved in anti-war movement. Not to giving you exact spoilers, find in the song the word starting in "g" letter (occur twice, repeated) and confront it with dates 1914 and 2019. Then, knowing the story behind this song you will see (I hope) some symbols in totally different way.

Out of those i listed I guess Deer Dance and Aerials are maybe my favs? maybe their all great. I should mention the album version of Aerials is longer and you guys will probably enjoy Deer Dance's lyrics.

I saw System of a Down LIVE at Ozzfest in 2005. I cried. They were amazing and as perfect live as on album.
Daron was known for being the savage craziest guy in the band ,and his way of singin demonstrate it

One thing I love about the double album this song came from, the guitarist Daron Malakian said he loved songs that have these epic parts in the middle or towards the end and wanted to create an album full of songs jam packed with epic moments. They strove to create these epic rock opera's in 2 to 3 minute chunks and I think they accomplished that goal.

I propose Buckethead for some instrumental guitar virtuosity. He's one of these unknown geniuses. I heard all 170 hrs of his solo work, incredibly diverse. My own Buckethead playlist is about 25 hours, I can listen to that all the time. Also, no copyright claims, I believe. I could give you a list of 200 items from nasty metal riffage to soft acoustic stuff. Good starting points:
Soothsayer (the studio version probably better for beginners)
Jordan live at the Culture Room (brutal guitar skill show-off, Guitar Hero players might know this one)
Pike 65 - Hold Me Forever (an epic 28 -minute instrumental emotional tribute to Buckethead's deceased mother)

I remember when this came out. The first time i heard it i had his away in Carpentry class with a few friends. (obviously a friend who could afford it) and we listened to this CD and i fkn looooooooooved it. I was So into it and it was my personality for a month or two lmao. High School vibes. Think i was a Jr at the time this came out. Loved it though. Fkn love Soad.

The guitar player sings as well, and he has an amazing voice too... I admit his timing is less precise than Serj, but I think that makes them work well together... Serj will be right in the pocket, the other singer it’ll be a little high or low or the beat... it hits for me.
If you want to hear their best duet though, check out Question. It’s an underrated epic.

If you want to hear an actual, straight-up, Serj Tankian rap flow, you gotta turn to their Wu-Tang collab. Otherwise he just does stuff that’s rap adjacent, and you’re left to conjecture how good a rapper he’d be.

I'd suggest checking out some of Serj Tankian's solo work, but the system of a down rabbit hole is still deep yet.
This song was their answer to Iraq War. there were scenes in this clip recreating what happened in Abu Quraib prison that was censored by MTV, same way as the verse "Where the fuck are you?" was cut out.
Considering you want more SOAD suggestions...here's a few songs that I haven't seen many people react to. Soldier Side. ATWA. Holy Mountains. If you want to hear Serj cover another politically motivated type of song then I suggest listening to him cover Dead Kennedy's - Holiday in Cambodia.

SOAD song that doesnt get any love anymore is "Forest" and "War" 2 of their best songs that no longer get shine. Forest has one of the best choruses SOAD has ever done, and War is full on wild.
If you guys do Wars music video, I recommend using lyrics on the side as its part of their live concert and the equipment back then was not the best. But i still recommend the video though as Serjs dance are Godly and the visuals are also really nice, but audio quality is meh

You should listen to Serj in his solo work. It's different (obviously) but, no less great than anything he helped produce with System of a Down. Empty Walls would be my suggestion as a first listen.
