Note that when you drag a file into a sparse folder, the file is actually copied, as though you were dragging the file to a thumb or external drive. Once satisfied that the sparse folder is working properly, send the original file to Trash. Otherwise the security aspect is defeated.

That's a good point. I typically run FileVault on my system so it isn't an issue in my case but it is if a person uses an unencrypted drive. I think you can also securely erase the trash from the Finder file menu. I don't see it on my computer but it could be because I'm using FileVault.

If FileVault is SOO secure and NO ONE can possibly break the encryption and access the data/files in your hard disk, then why does Apple advise you to erase your disk (when you have filevault enabled) when you give it your Mac in for repair?? So IS it 100% safe, or not?? Can I give my mbp into an Apple store for repair and NOT erase my disk (so I won't need to go through the entire process of deleting and then restoring everything after), and BE 1000% sure that NO "Mac Guru" in there can possibly access my disk??

FileVault is not opensource so no one can say how safe it really is, but there may also be no back doors. The Aes encryption algorithm is actually unbreakable with today's computers, but as I said, nobody knows whether filevault is encrypted correctly at all. but it is very suitable for normal hackers and thieves. however, if you want to be safe on the road use Veracrypte ... then even the NSA will cry

Goofy-when you hand over product to a technician you have to accept that you need to also give them your login details in order for them to have authorized access to do whatever it is they do.

does deleting the image file restore the space allocated to it back to Macintosh hd?

Yes, unless it goes first to your trash folder, then you need to empty the trash to get the storage space occupied, by the image file, back.

RIGHT!!?? Everyone online says NOTHING about it being returned to the HD space… weird.. I’m going to try and see if it works. Sooo misleading
