This film is dedicated to Mayor Reiger, who had a great deal of influence on the development of Utrecht at the turn of the century. The opening shot is an aerial view of downtown, filmed from the hundred-metre-high Domtoren. Considerableattention is paid to the Domtoren, the Domkerk, the nearby university, and the most important canals. From a boat in the canal, the filmmaker depicts the shipyard basements and the low-lying quays. Many passers-by pose for the camera. Footage is also shot from a moving tram. The moving camera gives the film a more dynamic character than most of the other ‘city films’ from the early years of cinema.

Prachtige beelden. Viel me wel op dat er veel troep in de gracht dreef maar dit was dan ook nog in de tijd van voor de riolering.

Wat is het toch fantastisch dat dit beeldmateriaal bestaat. Het geeft mij een diep gevoel van verbondenheid met de stad en alles en iedereen die daar toen leefde. Bezig was met "iets". En al die levende zielen leven niet meer. Taak volbracht of wat dan ook. Tijd voor " nieuwe zielen" die ook weer met "iets" bezig zijn. En weer ruimte gaan maken voor de volgende. Mooi toch.
