I have an Aussie/Lab mix (no, not the designer breed, Aussiedor, but the mutt that comes from an Aussie getting tagged by a Lab). This is our second one. What a dog...best of both breeds! What an intelligent, loving, and loyal dog!

Actually, the statement about them being blue heelers is very inaccurate. The use of heeler for this dog breed is just due to the confusion of them being titled Australian (which they did not originate from) like the Australian Cattle Dog, which actually is a breed from Australia that is called a Heeler because of the specific way they herd very large cattle by primarily nipping hard at their heels. The Australian Cattle Dogs originated from the English Cur and the Australian Dingo. While Australian shepherds do nip at the heel and head of the cattle they are herding on occasion, they primarily use eye contact, barking, and body movement to control cattle. I have had the pleasure of seeing both breeds at work.

I owned a Aussie Shepherd. Ginger was so easy to train. When we went for a walk and reached a curb, she would automatically sit until I took a step off the curb to cross the street. Smart dog.

I have always thought that the Australian Shepherd was originally developed by breeding several sheep herding breeds with an Australian Cattle Dog. That explains eye and coat color and why they can successfully herd cattle as well as sheep.

They have no cattle dog in them.2 of the breeds use are Border Collies and a Pyrenean Shepherds.
A lot of Aussie look a lot like a Border Collie in so many ways.

Today I would not go by the AKC standards because they change dog breeds to suit people not the original breed standard. Yes, Aussie can have black one side of the face and around the eye and white on the other side and around the eye. And a lot of people and some vets tell the owners of Aussie that they are overweight when they are not, because I think they get them confuse with a Border Collie People look at mt Aussie and ask if she is a Border Collie because of her coat color and markings. They are great dogs but not for a beginner. And not all Aussie are high energy dogs, they adapt to their owners and how they live.

That is not true about their tails you might fine 1 dog out of the litter with a bob tail most have long tails. My Aussie has a beautiful long tail and has no problem with it.
