  • The Wasteland is home to many horrific and bizarre creatures, some of which are mutated by radiation, others by pollution, while few are made with viruses, including one of the strangest creatures imaginable, The Wanamingo. Wanamingos, named after their breeding ground, also known as aliens to the uninitiated, are large bipedal life forms that bear almost no resemblance to any other creature on earth, the closest thing I can think of would be a gulper, the mutated species of salamander, but even they are very different creatures. Wanamingos have prominent central bodies, where you might expect the arms to be, are instead two long appendages, dare I say tentacles, that not only serve as weapons, lashing and batting enemies to death while slowly inducing radiation damage, but also as hands that can grasp and manipulate objects, above their large bodies are larger heads, where no visible sensory organs can be seen, no eyes, ears or nose, only a mouth full of dagger sized teeth, capable of chewing a full grown man to death at a moments notice, but that’s only if you happen to cross paths with a Wanamingo which is incredibly rare.

honestly the tunnelers and wanamingos seem to have a lot of similarities in their hierarchy and how they live, would not be surprised to learn that the two had encountered each other underground as the tunnelers spread and the encounter drove one or both species toward the surface. As for where they came from originally fev exposure to some dessert dwelling reptilian or amphibian seems more likely than the alien theory, at least until a handler species is introduced, as they do not seem intelligent enough to arrive here by themselves, and the zetans do not seem a likely species to create or handle such a creature.

Instead of fallout 3 originally being set closer to the great war, I just assumed it's only been settled more recently due to radiation levels. I mean I would assume that DC would have been a primary target (more nukes shot at it) in the great war.

3:25 Fun Fact: There was supposed to be Wanamingo in Fallout 76 with one of the Post-Wastelander updates, around the time the Sheepsquache was added. It was part of a scrapped quest involving what was called “The Grief Gobbler”. At the end of the quest after defeating the large enemy present, be it a gulper, deathclaw, mega sloth, etc, the questgiver was to mention how that creature you encountered isn’t the Grief Gobbler as the quest ends on this peculiar cliffhanger. Added to the code around this time was the Wanamingo plushie, one now available to acquire. The design is more akin to a mixture of this design and either a mirelurk king or frog. Three clawed arms and legs with a body that is mostly dominated by a giant dagger-toothed maw, beady eyes, and spines down its back. Design wise it was indeed inspired by the blue glowing frogs we find in areas like the white spring pool, although more proportional with the large maw. Sadly it was cut.

  • @Asko83

One of my favourite details about the Wanamingos is that when you target them in F2, even the game interface doesn't know what some of the body parts are. I remember hating having to fight these things, and then discovered that it was because my party was armed with end-game energy and pulse weapons, and these little buggers are only tickled by 'em. A few gauss rounds or sniper rifle shots to the face and they ended up being a bit easier to deal with.

Loving your content as always buddy keep it up and I've got to agree with you it would be great if the developers could have agreed on some Canon but that might be part of the fun that we get to sit here and discuss and debate and in a strange way the Tails we tell each other about the Wasteland would be similar to those who would actually live in the Wasteland you don't know what's true what's a lie what's a tall tale and what's real. That's the fun of it.

They kinda remind me of octopus or squid
With their body plan flipped possibly a heavily mutated form of octopus or squid
That migrated from the coast and since they weren't properly equipped to survive they didn't have the numbers to bounce back at least away from the coast

I apologize, I didn't realize you were uploading more frequently, thanks RUclips for the notification. Griping aside, my experience with the first three games in the series is very limited, I was introduced to Fallout via Fallout 3. So this enemy came as a bit of a shock to me, and I'm wondering now whether or not they'll bring that back for Fallout 5. I digress, excellently performed as usual, Synonymous. Thank you.

They are a awesome creature. I remember getting ambushed by them in FO 2, in the desert on my first play through before i had real good gear and just getting torn to shreds. Would love to see them return with other Underground creatures as well. I think a lot of opportunity in that genre of enemy.

It should be noted that there is a patch for Fallout 2 that restores all the content that was cut before the game's release, and one of the locations you are able to travel to is the EPA (Earth Protection Agency in Fallout 2) headquarters. After solving the puzzles there you can descend to the bottom floor which is SWARMING with Wanamingos. Even with the entry in the Fallout Bible indicating they are a pre-war weapon made by the Enclave that escaped captivity, there is no actual known canon as to where they come from, though the script text for them is EPA_, which is also true for Floaters, Deathclaws, and Centaurs. It was possible that a bit of lore would have had them as aliens that had been experimented on when things went Awry. Albeit, we shall never truly know, as Chris Avellone was averse to their inclusion, and to date Fallout 2 is the only official game they have appeared in.
