    Really appreciate that you added the lines and dots for those of us playing around on more intricate stuff. Looks like the LPH80 with a 1.0 needle is in the goldilocks zone for my needs. Model paints are expensive so I don't want to just shoot 60% of it into oblivion :D

      Hi buddy, Good to hear it's been some help, I know a few scale model makers watch the channel, so yes, certainly, the smaller patterns are important.
      I don't do models but have bought some speed shapes to do a few reviews on smaller guns and airbrushs. I haven't got far yet, but hopefully, one day, cheers 👍

    Hi Pete, that's interesting...
    I just saw that some sellers, for example here:
    you have to go through the whole page and look at the photos carefully...
    They state that:
    - Iwata LPH-80 E4 sprayer has 9 air holes
    - Iwata LPH-50 E2 sprayer has 6 air holes
    I've seen other places mention this, but I've never actually seen it.
    Yes, if I manage to purchase a Walther Pilot 1 round head spray gun as well as a wide head, I will be able to compare as I own an Iwata LPH-80, complete with nozzle and needle assembly and E2 and E4 sprayers.
    Personally, I mainly use the E4 sprayer, I mainly use the LPH-80 gun for painting clear 2K paints. Ideal spray size, low air consumption and very low overspray outside the painted object.
    I can't pass up the Iwata LPH-80, it's the best spray gun for painting bicycle frames in my opinion. That's also why I thought about buying the HP-G3 0.3mm conversion set for spraying basic colors, pearlescent, metallic and effect colors. Now I quite often use a Sparmax GP-850 spray gun for this, adapted to the size of the nozzles, 0.2 - 0.3 and 0.5 mm. It is a very fine painting, but it also takes longer, after all, the Sparmax spray gun covers less surface when painting. Ideal for basic painting will be the head and nozzle size 0.3mm HP-G3 or Walther Pilot 1. For applying basic colors..., I work with a round head - Round Jed a little better - (Sparmax GP-850).
    Thank you for your reviews and work. You are a source of information and inspiration for me.

      Hi Ivan, I couldn't see a link so maybe you could try again? .
      I have 2 LPH80s , one in 1.0 and one in 1.2 and the tips only have 6 holes, I may be wrong so will check but I'm sure they are exactly the same as the LPH50, the LPH50 came with E2 and LPH80 with E4 caps.
      Glad you like the videos, I enjoy making and sharing them 😀

    Ok,,,,, off the bat a very big Thankyou. I know the time you put into it and understand you not wanting to repeat yourself.
    I have started to make fishing lures so my dollar is spread over a wide range of stuff that has benfits it time / material savings
    So painting equipment I have found over the last year can save me a fair amount of time. After picking up a 2nd hand Iwata RG3. I started to look at the lph50/80 to see if there was something to be gained from there reduced partical velocity and CFM . And there is very little helpful info for my kind of use, your vid has been more informative than any one else's I have seen thus far and the beifits of lph would maybe useful to me
    The lph-50 side feed could match in with the RG3 cup.
    The interchangeablity of the 80 and 50 parts along with others in the Iwata range would be an interesting topic for a video
    Franken50 or budget lph79 😂
    Thanks again👍👍

    Hi Pete looks like I'm first to comment for a change😎 A brilliant video mate as I do like your spray out or fan pattern tests, it's surprising the difference the tip size makes to the fan size while using the same aircap.
    When you used the W50 with the 1.3 it was amazing how big and wet the fan was from that little gun it's bigger than some full size guns, I can see why you like this gun.
    The LPH50 E2 0.4 is able to lay down some really small lines it's almost like an airbrush so I would have thought it would be a good gun for bike frames or is it to slow making it a long laborious job, if not it would be an excellent gun for model makers👌👍
    Thanks for doing this video mate it must have taken hours to do with setting it up, filming then the editing process, cheers👏🙏👍

      There's very little about the differences so i really wanted to do this video and it was really interesting to do, i would say the 0.4 is ideally for model makers, the 0.6 is good for bike frames and small tubing in general although the 1.0 is probably better for some motorcycle frames, it really cuts down on waste because your using most of the fan, cheers mate 👍

    Hi Pete, I really appreciate all the work you put into these reviews. I purchased a lph-80 about 5 years ago. It has the e2 cap with a 1.2 nozzle. I am in the process of repainting my motorcycle tanks and fairings. Is there a big difference between the e2 and e4 caps with a 1.2? I noticed you only went to 1.0 with the e2 lph-80 on the video. Cheers

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  6 месяцев назад

      Hi John, I only went up to 1.0 as normally the LPH80 in 1.2 ships with the E4 cap, the answer to your question is it speeds it up a little and makes the fan a little bigger but th difference is small.
      The caps are very expensive on their own, so I wouldn't think it's worth just getting a cap.
      Good to hear you like the video mate, I genuinely enjoy making them as I love seeing all the little differences there are in these guns, thanks for watching 👍

    Hi Pete, would you be willing to do a comparison of the Iwata LPH-80 - 0.4mm nozzle, E2, E4 with the Iwata HP-G3?
    Does it make sense to buy the HP-G3 - 0.3mm conversion kit if I own the LPH-80-0.4mm.
    Thank you.

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  Год назад

      Hi Ivan, unfortunately I haven't got a HP-G3 so can't say how much of a difference it would be over the LPH80 0.4.
      Certainly looks at the cap of the G3 the air holes are much smaller than the E4 cap and the air consumption is a fair bit less so I'm thinking it will be a smaller finer atomised pattern

  • @karllongbottomguitars9192
    @karllongbottomguitars9192 Год назад +1

    Great review Pete 👍
    What do Iwata say is the difference between the E2 and E4 air caps as there doesn't appear to be much in it , E4 seems to have slightly finer attomisaton .
    Cheers Karl

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  Год назад +1

      Thanks Karl, been meaning to get this video sorted out for ages, hopefully it will help people describe what tip size they need.
      The E4 has 4 air holes and runs at 1bar, the E2 has 2 air holes and runs at 0.9 bar, the E2 uses less air.
      The atomisation is as good with both, the E4 puts out a little more material so is faster so the E2 is better for smaller things as it gives you more control

    Hello Pete, I have limited experience so I can't answer this question: Is it better to get a gun larger than your immediate need and dial down the pressure and air or buy a 'right-size' gun and then buy another when you have bigger things to paint. For instance, for my immediate needs a Grex TS7 would do and so would an LPH50. But the w50, either Kiwami or non-Kiwami would be much more 'future proof. The Grex can be scaled down to 0.2 (needle and nozzle sets cost $35) and I don't need a quality gun bigger than the W50 Kiwami. I have other bigger guns than I use for 'farm equipment' spraying. (It would be interesting to see a comparison between the LPH50 and the Grex TS7)
    From what I understand, the LPH50 is engineered for HVLP and needs to be run as designed to get proper atomization. I don't need the HVLP features (no close neighbors, I don't paint much, I will spend the money on paint as needed, I have plenty of compressor capacity). My conclusion is that a conventional gun is a better choice. I can buy a W50 direct from Japan for about $118 or a LPH50 for $108.)
    The question is: would the W50 Kiwami partially closed down (not full open) perform properly when being used as if it were a 0.6-1.0? My thinking is that the answer is 'maybe' because the gun operates at higher pressure than HVLP and so might have more adjustment range.. But there must be a 'cross-over point where the gun no longer works acceptably. This question would apply to every gun to a greater or lesser extent. Otherwise everybody could just buy one gun and do everything. With it. I am guessing that below a certain air flow the paint won't atomize but will spatter. So, how far can you 'dial down' a W50 of either type to the behavior of a smaller nozzle before it fails to paint properly?

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  10 месяцев назад

      Hi Robert, What I find with spray guns is that if you start closing down the fan, the atomisation starts to suffer. The more you close it, the worse it gets.
      So, you summed it up really when you said if it was possible to close guns down with both fluid and fan size together with pressure and not lose anything then you wouldn't need all the different sizes of guns available.
      The LPH50 and W50 guns are quite different, so I would buy whichever suits your immediate needs, then get the other when you can

Anyway, do you know what the CFM requirements are for the W50 and W50 Kiwami4? I use a Devilbiss SRi Pro for all my clearcoats but I'm always looking for something smaller in size as painting bikes is becoming space challenged due to the size and tube shaping of carbon frames.

      The figure quoted by Iwata for the W50 is around 2.8 cfm the Kiwami is around 2.5, this compares to 2.2 for the LPH80 and 1.9 for the LPH50 E2 setup.
      So all less or comparable to the TE5 pro lite

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Christopher, the bigger tip sizes normally flow more material and / or thicker material.
      Have you looked at some of the technical data sheets for the materials you will use?
      That's a good place to start. Normally, a primer coat needs a larger tip than a base colour coat or a clear top coat, so it is not often that one gun will do it all.
      Certainly, you have a good budget, so getting good quality tools to help you shouldn't be too difficult.
      Let me know what the technical data sheet says, and I'll try and help. Cheers 👍

    Hi Pete, I really appreciate your reply and we have the same thinking towards the difference between the Iwata HP-G3 and Iwata LPH-80 spray gun heads. It is primarily a difference in the size of the holes on the spray head and thus the atomization.
    Otherwise, the guns are structurally the same, needles, nozzles and atomizers can be changed between them. The air consumption is really determined by the HP-G3 spray head.
    FYI, Iwata spray guns are very similar to Prona RL-90F (LPH-80) and then Prona RH-90F (HP-G3) spray guns - nozzles and needles are fully compatible, I personally use their 0.4-0 sets ,6-1.0-1.2mm on the Iwata LPH-80 spray gun to full satisfaction.
    The bow is of very high quality and I used it, however I was able to buy the Iwata LPH-80 for a very low cost - CZK 2500 and I am very happy about it. I mainly paint bicycle frames.
    Personally, I would also draw attention to the Walther Pilot 1 spray gun - a very small spray gun, the possibility of Round Jed and Wide Jed heads -0.2 to 1.5 mm, top filling with paint, I am trying to buy this spray gun. The simplicity of the design and the possibility of changing the spray heads are interesting - in my opinion, the ideal spray gun for small projects and an alternative to the HP-G3/5 and LPH-80.
    walther-pilot.de/en/products/details/?tt_products%5BbackPID%5D=7&tt_products%5Bproduct%5D=463&cHash=a2371318cf3ac1a5188892c3cc2e3b23

    I hope you find this information interesting Pete and thank you for your expert videos and information on the mini spray gun.
    I also wonder if the nozzles on the Iwata LPH-80 in the E4 version have 6 or 9 airflow holes?
    I have both E2 and E4 sprayers, but the nozzles always have 6 holes for airflow.
    Thank you.

      Hi Ivan, I'm not familiar with the Walther pilot or any Walther spray gun but it certainly looks good 😀.
      The tips on the LPH80 & LPH50 , both E2 and E4 have the same number of holes, it's only the cap that is different.
      If you get a pilot please let me know what you think, I also spray cycle frames as well so always interesting to hear new things 👍

    Hello Pete, a small question: do you have the Meiji regulator on each of your guns, or you simply unscrew it from the inlet when you want to use another gun? They are kinda expensive (about $90) from Japan, so I needed to ask the question.

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  10 месяцев назад

      Hi buddy, no, I just screw them on the bottom by hand before I start, so I only have 3 of them in use.
      I know lots of people store their guns on a rack, ready to go, I don't, I store mine in a big 5mm and 10mm thick steel storage container for security, so keeping the gauge on complicates this, it takes around 3 seconds to screw one on, cheers mate 👍

      @windsurfingphd No, I don't use any tape to the gun, only on the quick connection on the other end of the gauge as that stays on.
      I get mine from paintingtooljapan. They are on eBay, although I message them on Instagram . It's a bit cheaper, I guess, because they don't pay eBay fees that way.

    Hello Pete, I went ahead and bought a Kiwami W50 1.3 6BGC on your recommendation. I was testing this gun against LPH-50 and LPH-80. I found the fan size is quite small like LPH-80, tops between 3 to 3.5 inches. Actually, LPH-50 gave me a similar fan size like your Kiwami W50 gun in your review, about 5.5-6 inches. I was shooting plain DI water for the tests. Every gun had the max opening at the bottom, full fan size. I had to control the needle adjustment to atomize the spray properly. LPH-50 and 80 had approximately 13psi (0.09MPascals) at the gun, W50 had about 20psi (0.15MPascals). How can I increase the fan size of W50?

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  9 месяцев назад

      Hi buddy, when you say you had to control the needle adjustment to atomise the spray properly, do you mean you were not using the fluid fully open?
      You really need to try these with paint or clear coat that you use as the viscosity of just water is not correct.
      The W50 Kiwami 1.3 only has a slightly bigger fan than the LPH80 1.2, so don't expect much difference, although the flow rate is much higher, so it's a wetter pattern, making it a much faster gun

    • @windsurfingphd
      @windsurfingphd 9 месяцев назад

      @@peteshobbies5383 Hello Pete, yes I was adjusting the fluid control knob in each test so I don't get drippy blob of water on the paper. I wanted to see uniform elliptical shape with little wetness in the middle. I will spray water-based acrylic paint tomorrow per your suggestion. I will update my findings. Thanks for answering quickly :-))

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  9 месяцев назад

      @windsurfingphd If the fluid is being held back, it will affect the pattern size, that's why in all my spray out test, for a full pattern, I will always have the fluid wide open, so it gives an idea of what people can expect.

    I currently have an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS airbrush fitted with .5 needle and have come to the realization for building 1/12 scale cars and trucks it is not optimal for priming and base coating. I have a Grex Tritium Micro Spray Gun on order with a .5 and .7 needles and fan spray caps. The caps have holes in them like these mini spray guns, but I am questioning if I should return the Grex and go to an Iwata LPH80 after seeing how nice these seem to work. Any reaction to that?

    Nice comparison Pete! Have you tried the E4 cap with the 1.2 needle and close down the fluid and the pattern with less air? Will it still spray properly at reduced output or is there a limitation on how much you can throttle back the LPH-80?

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Jeff, I find with most guns, when you close them down on the fan you start to lose some atomisation, it's why I virtually always us full fan, closing it down and reducing the pressure tends to make it worse.
      At 14psi, it's already running a low-pressure so backing that off is at the expense of atomisation, if you want a lower pressure the LPH50 E2 or the E2 version of the LPH80 is worth looking at, it runs a few psi less anyway and gives a better performance if you lower that pressure

    • @jeffdeluca1153
      @jeffdeluca1153 11 месяцев назад

      @peteshobbies5383 oh this is good to know. So if I keep the pressure at around 14 psi, and turn the fan smaller, would that work? I see you spray the round dots but is that at the expense of atomization then? I see I have lots to learn.

    • @jeffdeluca1153
      @jeffdeluca1153 11 месяцев назад

      @peteshobbies5383 I love the LPH80, but there are times when I need only a 2 or 3 inch fan instead of the 5 inches or so the E4 1.2 puts out at full fan. Is it best to get an E2 cap with a 1.0 for the Lph 80 to avoid buying another gun? Does the fluid nozzle need changed to accommodate the 1.0 as well? Thanks so much for your time Pete! I'll try not to jeopardize it. 😊

      @peteshobbies5383  11 месяцев назад

      @jeffdeluca1153 Yes, that's certainly what I have found, I guess that's why they make smaller tip sizes

    • @peteshobbies5383
      @peteshobbies5383  11 месяцев назад +1

      @jeffdeluca1153 Yes, it's better to go down in tip size to achieve a smaller fan than throttle back the larger tip.
      You may be better off buying an LPH 50 from Japan, probably cheaper than a tip, needle, and E2 cap separately, and those components are full interchangeable
