    14:00 it's an odd circumstance how one's own "9 to 5, save for the rainy day" career choice can be the catalyst pushing the fulcrum toward seeing that there is in fact some wisdom in adopting at least a touch of those hedonistic 'values'.
    I worked in a two types of medical settings; the Level 1 Trauma (where the ratio of 'unexpected' death was much higher) did not have *anywhere near* of an effect on my own personal life when compared to the time spent working within the Hospice/EoL type of environment did. In many cases, deaths in the Trauma/Emergency Dept. are emotional and lean more toward a 'shock-to-the-system' sort of grief for the kit and kin of those who pass, and the person passing does not often have much time to think of anything beyond the urgent process of their own moment to moment status of survival. In End-of-Life treatment, I saw and interacted with people who already had time to process the fact that they were just marking time and waiting for "the day"; this environment broke me emotionally and set in motion a complete change in my perceptions about the future versus the present. Not one single person that was at death's door ever reflected on their lives and said, "I wish I had worked more hours and saved more money". No, it was an almost universal thought for those residents/patients in that they all wished they had spent more time with their loved ones (for rich or for poor), and/or wished they hadn't been so afraid to do or try new things and just take in as much of the world and it's people that was possible with the time they were here. The regrets always converged upon having wasted too much *time* chasing things that didn't matter as much to happiness as they had always believed. I went back to working in the Trauma 1 setting; I can handle the sudden emergent circumstances and resulting 'aestheto-anatomically displeasing' sights smells and sounds far easier than the daily shouldering of being constantly reminded of unavoidable march of time and entropy. My hat off to my fellow caregivers that are able to manage that "stoicism" as well as you do, and remain able to operate within the various 'End of Life' environments. The constant air of regret and depressive circumstances were too infectious for me to withstand. Thank you all for being who you are

    *Not existing didn't stop me from being born* ... Not existing didn't stop a life from being imposed. *This is true for all beings - They didn't exist, and that lack of existing didn't do anything to stop a life from being imposed* .. So if you imagine a universe completely devoid of all life but then a single brain comes to exist and starts doing consciousness, then _that_ consciousness is going to be imposed. And your lack of existence couldn't do anything to stop it from being imposed, just as your lack of existing couldn't stop a consciousness (via a brain) from being imposed. In this way, there's no escaping conscious experience.

    We all assume things don't have to be this way, we assume utopia is possible. But what if suffering is built into the universe. What if it's something the universe requires? If the Anthropic Principle is right, it's possible that suffering might be a needed aspect of conscious experience.

    40:06 I find nihilism very comforting dwelling on it while you’ve talked about it (normally I go from one belief system do another) Right now i’m researching catholicism and Christianity, but it does seem easier to forget what matters, I only say that because what’s here before you should matter, parents, family, friends, Earth. We all read in at different levels- for someone who reads “too deep” in most areas:/ This one seems to be of validity (but I must add does it not take a man’s state of mind to impose this thought? would that then make the belief just as meaningless? even if it’s truth, truth is something outside that governs the inside… Maybe that’s the truth and why those above are so capable in doing heinous things with no moral checking. We really do have immense power, even if it’s forgotten, theoretically those above know the truth and if it was nihilistic in nature wouldn’t they hide it to abuse it? Giving others a grander thing to live for (like that Japanese way of life, except always being pecked at and dismantled individually🤔.. or is it that i’ve aligned myself in the nihilist eye at the time of corruption, but what’s corruption?- the breaking of a person wants for another’s “needs”, what are needs? power for some. Logically we’ve made the answers and the reasons it’s appearing, I might look more into this, but it just came back to them being able to stoop us down again… I fear most for these people when they hear the true good news but don’t bear it.

      lol a minute in and he’s gone and proved my thoughts, thank you for your great work and sharing throughout, whatever our paths i’m glad we’ve found the small joys of life in the large aspects of others- Love you all and remember you’re loved by the many even if you’ve yet to meet them, we welcome you with open arms in this harshness of a cold world that too needs nourishment.

  • @erinmagner
    @erinmagner Месяц назад

    Existence is a temporal illusion because time isn't real, and therefore our existence doesn't have value simply because it is real. When Buddhists say that life is suffering, I interpret that to mean that we struggle to exist, and that the struggle is what gives existence it's meaning and therefore it is the struggle, not the pleasure, that has value. When we think of a meaningful act, we are thinking of all the things we suffered to achieve, not the amount of pleasure it gives us. People love and who are loved by everyone don't value being in love because they don't know what life is like without it. When you dedicate your life to curing a disease it is only satisfying because you are thinking of all the suffering that existed before there was a cure. Most of the beauty in being alive can be found in what we found uncomfortable about being alive and struggled with, and so this illusion is a gift even if it isn't really real at all.

    Yes of course service to others is actually selfish. No one escapes self-centeredness. People that go out of their way to go feed the poor for instance indeed do it because they want to and like it. Even if they feel like it's a pain in the butt yet they still do it, They are doing it because the idea confirms their own idea of how they should be. No matter what you will trace it back to selfishness. However this isn't what it seems. It's okay that that is the case. This puzzle troubled me for some years.
    The solution is that there are two kinds of selfishness. There is the all-inclusive selfishness as well as the exclusive selfishness. What we want to practice in life is all inclusive selfishness. However the exclusive selfishness is the ugly selfishness.

    • @HasturLaVishnu

      well said, I don't really believe in purely selfless acts of kindness. you can still do selfless stuff, but at the end of the day, you will feel better for doing those acts of kindness, and it's not a bad thing. It just feels good to do good things for other people, imho.

    Happiness is overrated we must not be happy we must be full of joy not happiness we must look beyond earthly meaningless pleasures and find true fulfillment in something beyond us. When it comes to joy It is about being content with the most insignificant things that at least make you smile. If I had only smiled once in my life I still would have experienced more joy than someone who has never existed.
    "We are half hearted creatures, fooling about with drink, and sex, and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he does not know what is meant by a vacation by the sea, we are far to easily pleased."

    The fundamental problem I have with stoicism is that a stoic has to make assumptions on what is and isn't in our control. Obviously there are things in life that are not in our control, but ultimately, we have to decide what types of things we do have control over. To me, stoicism is a lazy and fatalist philosophy.

    The presentation was overly simplified, to the extent of being counterintuitive. It was the least Stoic rendition I have ever encountered. Why was it so diluted and watered down?

    00:20:16 “…because in the end, living a life that's not real is pointless and meaningless…”
    If it’s pointless and meaningless, then it’s not the end, because our current human experience is, in truth, _not_ the real life after all.
    Side note, I totally believe that Ikigai is a great blueprint for life if you haven’t yet created your own. As you talked about Ikigai, I thought of my grandpa-he turns 105 years old this year. He taught me the secret to a long life when I was only a child and through the years I believe what he told me more and more. He sai-ohhhh a cat! Save the cat! It’s probably gonna die because of hoomanz anyway.
