grandson: OH NO!!! (A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT)

  • The following is a study on the power of anonymity.
I was first motivated to bring this concept to life as I watched modern discourse, political and otherwise, devolve into vitriolic tribalism, fueled by our ability to hide behind a screen, a username, an online profile. A mask. My DMs became increasingly polarized, my safety threatened, my integrity and values questioned. I began to wonder how people would behave if we were having a face to face conversation. I wanted to find out how hurtful, or how compassionate, complete strangers would be towards one another if given some sort of social impunity. 25 people given a free pass to treat another human being however they wanted. This is what happened on that day.
The song Oh No!!! is about self destructive behavior and the moment when you feel your mental health getting in the way of your ability to live your life. In some way these masked strangers also represented those thoughts and impulses beyond my control.
This experiment largely inspired by the work of Marina Abramovic and Shia LaBeouf's #IAMSORRY .
Be sure to respond in the comments with your initial reactions, who you think you would be in the video, how you think you'd behave if you found yourself in this situation, and be sure to join the grandkid notification squad for more coming soon!

He appeared to have a moment or two of empathy, however, when he realized that he would actually have to put forth some effort and would probably get his hands dirty, he decided to cut and run and join back up with the shit that had been in the room before him. Those 25 people are just a microcosm of "modern" society. Self-involved, self-fulfilling, thoughtless, ignorant, oblivious, cruel...all just small parts contributing to the huge pile of shit that our society has become. Apple guy had the opportunity to make a difference and turned his back on it. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing".

I feel like this is a solid representation of online anonymity. Trash talk, online fights, harassment- these are so easy to do because it’s not like you have a reputation to uphold or an audience to please, right? You could literally do whatever and no one would know who you are. That’s the bittersweet beauty of it.

I mean, to be fair, the way this is all set up was, I think, inviting such behaviour to some extent. In a environment that would encourage conversation instead, I think there'd be only two who'd act like the majority there did - I think it's more of a showcase of how dangerous it is that a lot of people will be that degrading if given the chance and even the slightest encouragement.

To be fair some items could not be used in a nice way!
It would be nice to know if he knew what items would/could be on the table.
But there is no real anonymity in the internet and we know it, which is part of the reason why the internet is not completly full of hate and insults.
Peaple are this way on privat web-forums though, especially in those that are not open publicly.
I've read somewhere in the comments that it makes a difference if there would be a third person (someone who only watches but doesn't intervene) in there or only the two and i think we can say the camera counts as such a third person..
What i would like to know is, how was the experience, to be more specific: how was the psychological stress after this day, do you think you know more about human behavior .. For me it would be traumatic.. Respect! Also what were the limits those ppl had to agree on (the paperwork)?

I’m impressed with your bravery and creativity in doing this, but it broke my heart seeing people treat you this way. What kind of vibe do you think you were giving off during this? Do you feel you were letting on your fear/fascination etc? As an empath, I’m curious how much of your emotion I would’ve picked up vs my own horror and empathy at the situation.

It reminds me of the Stanford Prison experiment or the Bystander Effect.
The prison experiment had a clear divide of power between guards and prisoners. This was reflected in the torture. The bystander effect shows how someone is willing to do something when no one else is around. But would otherwise not be as likely to participate when other people are involved.

HHOO PPLLAA from the research I’ve done (as a psychology major), I’ve crossed paths with the Stanford prison experiment many times. The experiment was discontinued due to the abuse and psychological torture inflicted on the prisoners. It had gotten so bad the night guards thought no one would be watching and the “experiment was off” and chose to degrade the prisoners in a more pornographic manner. The experiment was supposed to last 2 weeks but was cut short 6 days into the experiment. Look at prisonexp.org to review the story of the experiment. It was also discontinued because of the ethical concerns of harm being done on an individual. The inhumane reality of the experiment

    • @addisonramsey5338
      @addisonramsey5338 5 лет назад +5

HHOO PPLLAA I don’t believe the people in grandsons experiment are bad. It is just based on the psychological associations of the individual. The prison experiment did extensive psychological evaluation before the experiment on the guards. When the guards became violent towards to prisoners. The psychologists expressed they did not have evidence to support that the guards would have acted in that behavioral manner.

But this is very very interesting and such an important message, it is a brilliant metaphor for online anonymous hate.

I see a lot of people talking about how this video exposes "true human nature", but I'm not really sure about that. I think there's definitely some selection bias here. Like, what kind of people do you think are going to respond to a craigslist ad for an experiment where they can do whatever they want to someone? I mean, watching it, I was thinking "If I was there I woulda tried to help clean him up or something. Not torture the poor boy.", but also, I'm not the kind of person that would end up in this situation in the first place, and I'm willing to bet that most people wouldn't do things like what was done here.

I would call it "human nature stripped free from social norms and moral". How we might act, if we knew there were absolutely zero consequences. No laws, no society, no values.
But yes, selection bias likely led to an exaggerated result. But I don’t know how you can rule it out with such an experiment and a sample of 25 people. They might have been influenced by what the people before them did.

This video saddened me so much; I'll openly confess I cried. This is the state of our world and it is... ugly. I could never think of doing such horrendous things even if I WAS granted permission. I know if I came across someone bound to a chair and sitting in the situation you were in I would rush to try and help them. I would do anything I could to try and talk to them let them know they would be okay, that its over...
I pray to the Gods our world changes for the better.

I come back to this video every month or so and I still can’t believe that Jordan willingly went through all of this shit. Like man I would probably go crazy after the first 2/3 people but nah, he just sat there and let everyone to decide what they want to do with him. It’s kinda scary what people can do when everything is anonymous.

I wonder how different the behavior would be if each time a person came into the room it was a fresh base/no evidence of previous actions...I feel like mob mentality plays a huge role in this. Along with the anonymity factor, the tone that was set by what the people can visibly see occurred before them probably affected what they decided to do. “Well clearly other people did this, so me doing this isn’t as bad” “someone did this so I’m gonna one up that by doing this” etc. Also the nature of the items that were placed in the room could suggest how you’re expected to act. The power of the situation definitely has to be taken into account.
either way tho.... still super messed up what these people did from behind a mask. I genuinely can’t imagine treating a person like that, regardless of if they can see me...especially if they’re physically restrained and clearly not having the best of experiences.
