Dragon Age Origins WAR MAGE - FULL "Combat-Playthrough"(Nightmare, No healing potions)

  • WARNING: THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL PLAYTHROUGH!
    This is a "Combat Playthrough", which means that we will focus on the combat in the game as we go through it. Cutscenes and dialogues are not touched(aside from some merchants), but most of the walking, looting, trading, and map travel is sped up. Loading screens are also edited out.
    This playthrough is designed to help everyone go through Nightmare with this new "War Mage" crowd-control build I made. This character was created as a "Nightmare Buster". I believe this build is one of the easiest to beat the hardest difficulty with, because it has a spell/tactic for every situation. He can heal, bomb and stun crowds, and paralyze bosses. He was made for war!
    So join me, as I go through the entire game level-by-level, fight-by-fight, showing you how to beat the game on Nightmare!
    Here are some details on how this playthrough came to be:
    For years now, I have been getting requests about so many things related to playthroughs such as:
    "Can you do a playthrough focusing on combat?"
    "Can you do a playthrough as a mage?"
    "Can you make a mage build that handles Nightmare with ease and show progression by level?"
    "Yeah, the full build is good, but how do you get through lower levels before you can get there?"
    "I hate the combat and I play for the story, but I want to beat the game on Nightmare for the achievement. Can you make a build that lets me beat Nightmare with not much effort?"
    "Can you make a build that can get me through Nightmare without the DLC rewards? I need to beat the game first to get them, right?"
    "I thought Alistair was Weapon and Shield! How do you make him use two swords? Cheats?"
    "How can your Morrigan work as a support? She is terrible for me!"
    "What tactics are you using for the team before their full build is complete?"
    I got dozens of requests like these, so I figured why not hit all these birds with one stone, right? One big playthrough in one big video, that is designed to create a build that can get you through Nightmare with relative ease, and show you how exactly we progress throughout the game. So here it is!
    In addition to this, I decided to go after some self-imposed challenges(like Inquisition's Trials) for fun and to show how good the build is, if used correctly. Here are the challenges:
    1. NO HEALING POTIONS
    Success! This challenge was only added after Lothering, when I realized that I had not used a single healing potion yet. Still, since I'm partly a healer, this was not that difficult. This is the challenge that made me throw away Revival from my quick bar, in case you are wondering why I did it, while you are watching the video. If you are a first-time player going through the game, you better keep that in there! :)
    2. THE WAR MAGE AND THE TEAM CAN'T GET KNOCKED OUT DURING ANY FIGHT
    Success, although I had a few close calls. Looking back I took a few risks that I should have avoided. Some of my usual tactics had to be altered too to avoid failing this(tell you about those in the time stamps/tactics), but ultimately it's a success.
    3. NO SWITCHING OFF OF THE MAIN CHARACTER DURING COMBAT WHILE ENEMIES ARE STILL ALIVE
    Fail! Sadly, this slipped my mind when I wanted to demonstrate how you can use Morrigan in Lothering to kill the bandit leader quickly. So with this single move, I managed to fail this. Other than this, I never switched off, but it's still a fail. Ah, well.
    4. KILL EVERY ELITE BOSS
    Success. Yes, even Cauthrien, without leaving the room or using pause.
    5. NO EXPLITS OR DLC REWARD ITEMS
    I'm not sure what people consider as "exploits", but this has to be a success. No infinite xp, infinite gold or even weapon tier improving at all. I also destroyed all dlc rewards.
    6. ONCE THE BUILD IS CONSIDERED COMPLATE, NO MORE TACTICAL PAUSE
    Success. Pretty thrilled about this, because I figured I would fail this since this is a CC character, but I managed to do it. After I reached the Deep Roads(around level 18-19) I never used Tactical Pause again.
    I had to edit the video in quite a few places, not only because I had to cut the loading out(and when I had to be afk), but because of all the crashes. Oh, my God the crashes! Based on my footage, I crashed 49 times and my game froze 16 times(even though, as you can see, the textures were on ugly medium). I also forgot to turn on OBS one time, which forced me to redo the entire Redcliffe village part.
    I'm using a different editing software now, so there might be a few errors here and there. I apologize for that.
    I hope you enjoy the video!

    I've had over 30 playthroughs of this game - I am humbled 38 minutes in. Getting the old blind mage to sign the form - didn't know you could do that - never saw a reason why. Then the reason why - smart. Very smart. Eventually I'm going to finish this video but already I'm enjoying it. A lot of people are doing DA:O playthroughs lately ... and they are terrible at it. This will be a good one I can tell.

    I'm loving this format. Idk how long it will take for me to watch the whole 23 hr video. Wouldn't it be better to upload 23 videos each around 1 hr duration in a playlist?

    • @AKisHerceg
      @AKisHerceg  7 месяцев назад +3

      I prefer not to upload 23 separate videos of this playthrough. I feel like it would swamp the rest of the content on the channel(especially if we consider that I will go through the game with a Rogue and a Warrior as well(so 23+23+23+2+2+2=75 videos of 3 playthroughs with 2 long version of each with and without commentary).
      That said, I did create a poll where my subscribers decided that they want to have a segmented playthrough as well, so currently I'm working on that.
      Around 8-9 videos, each has a length of 2-3 hour. Hopefully that will be good for people who prefer to watch it piece-by-piece. :)

    Any particular reason you waited so long to level Alistair or was it a personal challenge? I was gonna try following this build and I was wondering if I could start the dual wield build earlier.

    • @AKisHerceg
      @AKisHerceg  7 месяцев назад +1

      A bit of both. You can certainly start leveling him up early, however, he will suck. :)
      As a weapon and shield guy, he has two great abilities: Shield Bash - knockdown, and Shield Pummel - stun. And he is ready to defend you with them when you are attacked. These are life-saving skills when you are a mage. He is also more durable with Shield Cower, since archers will have a hard time cheap shooting him. The only thing really is his armor(which was a personal challenge). You can pop a few points into STR so he can wear steel, but not too much. By level 12 we NEED him to be able to fully function as a Dual Weapon guy(and you need to have 36 hard point in total into Dex for that).
      If you start levelling him as a dual weapon guy from the beginning(and give him a dagger and a sword), he will have next to nothing for a long time. He will be less durable, especially since he will have more damage, so he will be the primary target of everyone, instead of Sten. He will also have a hard time hitting with Dual Striking, since he still has low attack. Overall it is pretty ugly to level him, because he needs lots of Dex to unlock his passives, and Dex does not do much at the beginning for a Dual Weapon warrior who is there to deal damage. :)

      I have no mods other than the Visual Annoyance remover(otherwise the game becomes extremely unstable and drops fps constantly). I set the textures to medium, if it is on high the game crashes non-stop. It sill crashed a lot though but not as much as it would have with high textures.

      Never heard of it. Not even sure what Let Me Solo Her is. Is that a person? Or a build? What does that thing do? If you can tell me what that is, maybe we can come up with something. :)

    • @padangpasir8150
      @padangpasir8150 7 месяцев назад +1

      Let Me Solo Her is a person who wears a pot helmet and a sword. If the warden can eliminate the fatigue from not wearing armor maybe, it can optimised fully potential of evade from an enemy.

    • @AKisHerceg
      @AKisHerceg  7 месяцев назад +2

      @@padangpasir8150 Okay, I did some research on Elden Ring(which is basically like a DS game). The two game mechanics are completely different. DA does not have an evade mechanic where you can avoid attacks by executing dodges at the right time.
      There is no way to avoid enemy attacks other than your defense rating or your dodge %(talking about physical attacks not magical). Both are percentage based and not dependent on player skill. They depend on the build.
      Defense comes from the Dexterity stat, some skills, and the Defense enchantment on equipment.
      Dodge comes from certain skills, and from equipment.
      Now, based on what you are telling me and what I saw, Let Me Solo Her is going full nude with a pot helmet and uses two swords.
      This is by far the most suicidal idea in a game like DA, where there is no ability to manually dodge attacks, and everything is based on what stats you have, what skills you pick, and what you wear.
      There is no net benefit in not wearing armor in the game, other than reducing the stamina cost of your talents. So your fatigue becomes 0, but you also have 0 armor. Armor in DA works as flat damage resistance when it comes to physical attacks. So if you have 20 armor and someone hits you with 20 damage, you receive around 1 point of damage(that's the minimum damage). If you have 0 armor, you get all 20. So not wearing armor is not the best idea. Even if you go with a full Dex build and 100% Evasion, armor is still handy because some abilities are auto-hit skills, which means they will hit no matter what(Ram, Slam, Scattershot etc).
      The only build that would somewhat work is a Dex build. But it would be the worst Dex build ever. Especially since Let Me Solo Her uses Double Swords(which means you can only be a warrior or a rogue, and warriors have no talent that gives dodge). So even if you can boost your defense very high, your damage would be nothing, because sword damage uses Strength, not Dex.
      So basically, no you can't build that in DA. Unless you want to hate every moment of the gameplay.
      You have 0 armor, high defense(you can't boost dodge beyond 25% without equipment), and extremely poor damage. Definitely not a great idea. I think even the easy difficulty would be a challenge this way.
      If you don't go for Dex, but Strength instead to have great damage, then you have no Defense, so you will be hit with every single attack enemies will throw at you(not having armor to reduce the damage will also hasten your inevitable demise).
      So if this is what you meant by creating this build here in Origins, then this is basically a nude rogue with double swords(there is no pot helmet in the game). Sadly, that is a horrible idea in DA.

    • @AKisHerceg
      @AKisHerceg  Месяц назад +1

      It's because that is the part when you can fully equip him as a dual wield warrior with two swords: level 12, 36 dex and 4 available ability points.
      Until then if I would want him as dual wield he would be way too lame.
      With his shield, he comes with two great disabling ability and one good sustainable skill that protects him from arrows.
      That is better than having him try to hit enemies with dual weapons when can't use them effectively yet, because he has no skills with them. He needs 4 passives and 36 dex to equip two swords, so until he can do that, it is useless for him to start using dual weapons. It's much better to have him Shield Bash and Shield Pummel enemies.

    Weird that you didn't use Cone of Cold. It would have made many of the fights just irrlevant.
    On the other hand, I currently am doing something similar but with the mod "Flash Creatures Reescale". Let me tell you... you would have to change the rules for that one. Its virtually impossible to not get a party member not knocked out with that mod.

    • @AKisHerceg
      @AKisHerceg  4 месяца назад +1

      I did. As I wrote it in my detailed guide, you can either progress in the Earth or the Cold tree. This is a choice I leave up to you. In my opinion, the Earth tree is more rewarding in the beginning.
      You get Rock Armor, Stone Fist and Petrify, as opposed to Winter's Grasp and Cone of Cold(Cold Weapons are near useless in the beginning).
      Rock Armor is mandatory, since you have no decent armor in the beginning and you are squishy as hell. Stone Fist is great for knocking enemies down(if they are knocked down they can't hurt you until they get back up) - Winter's Grasp just damages them, and gives a very low chance to freeze. Petrify has a much better chance at paralyzing higher ranked enemies and keeps them immobile longer than Cone of Cold on nightmare(esp. in the beginning when your magic is low). With Stone Fist and Petrify, you can already start shattering enemies for the cost of 4 spells, whereas with Cone of Cold, you would need to spend 5 spell points to be able to start shattering. :)

    • @alejandroyava
      @alejandroyava 4 месяца назад +1

      Not really? Although Petrify is good for higher rank enemies, it is still 1 enemy. Cone of Cold allows you to Petrify from 2 to 7 enemies, provided that you use a good positioning or bring your opponents to where you want them or use choke points. And you can start shattering enemies right away provided that you have your allies with Bash, Mighty Blow or Riposte. And it only takes 3 spells, 5 if you want to shatter yourself.

    • @AKisHerceg
      @AKisHerceg  4 месяца назад +1

      @@alejandroyava "It is still 1 enemy". Correct. And if that enemy is a mage who loves chucking Fireballs, or an Elite/Boss with Mighty Blow or Final Blow, then it is God's gift.
      Yes, I was talking about shattering with your Warden.
      Cone of Cold holds normal enemies for less than 3 sec with around 30-35 Magic on Nightmare. It holds Elites and Bosses for 1-2 sec. Petrify can hold an Elite for 6-7 seconds. But as I said, Petrify alone is not what made me progress in the Earth tree first. It is the fact that if you go for Petrify, you get Rock Armor and Stone fist as well(so right after you get Rock Armor, you instantly get a cc skill with Stone Fist. Getting up can take as much time for humans as getting stuck in ice with CoC. If I would start progressing in the cold tree, I would still lack cc skills for two more levels because I need to get WG and FW first to get to CoC - when you play with permadeath, cc spells are priority over damager spells).
      With Cone of Cold you only get Winter's Grasp. Very low chance to freeze to a point where you can't consider it a cc spell. Frost Weapons is not worth it when you go from a high magic build, because it takes way to much mana away from you and your team only deals 2-3 additional cold damage. Flaming Weapons is a much better choice because not only it deals more damage but at the beginning you face a lot of darkspawn and they are weak to fire.
      That is how I see it, but as I said, you are free to pick between the two. Cone of Cold is indeed a great spell. :)
      If I would have used dlc equipment and sold the Reaper's Cudgel, I would have bought the three tomes and unlocked all of those spells at once after getting Petrify or CoC. Sadly since no dlc stuff was allowed, I had to make a choice.

      I specced him as a Dual Weapon Warrior. It is best if you spec him as a DW Warrior when he already has the necessary Dex to unlock Dual Weapon Mastery, otherwise he will be pretty weak compared to his Weapon and Shield abilities.
      If you start building him from the moment you get him as a DW warrior, he will have: no abilities, and in one hand he will hold a lousy dagger. This is much worse than having an excellent passive that protects him from missiles, and two disabling skills - one knock down and one stun. This is what he comes with automatically, so you are better off not changing his style until you have DW mastery and a couple of skills from the DW tree. :)
