It was interesting that you mentioned that Australians stress the first syllable in adult. I have noticed a shift in this and some other words (address - emphasis swapping to the first syllable, garage - emphasis swapping to the second syllable, defence - emphasis swapping to the first accent) among my fellow Australians in recent years. I think this is occurring because of our heavy exposure to American culture. Some other changes to a more American accent that I have noticed: process and progress with a short instead of a long o.
