I personally love the show for it's fashion, dramatic twists and turns.I just finished season 3,again it's ended on a cliffhanger. Season 1 was sweet cindrella kinda story.Season 2 was kinda boring.Season 3 was dramatic and crazy.
I'm a French-speaking Canadian, not into fashion at all & I very much dislike Parisians as a whole but I binge-watch Emily in Paris, every seasons. I know that most of it (especially all the understandable English speaking people is very unreal.) is romanticized. I agree that the architecture is gorgeous. For me, I totally fell in love with Ireland. Love your video, strait to the point. I'm sure it will help anyone who wishes to move there. So true about the people working in the hospitality industry. I can't get over how rude they are! I experienced it decades ago when I had the audacity to ask a question at someone working at the info desk at the train station!I think it's true at any touristy city in France. Experienced it many times in Nice....maybe because I'm a french speaker, maybe if it was a foreign langage to me, I would've been better received.
I love Emily in Paris. It's a fantasy. Most shows are unrealistic with fashion and the apartments the characters live in. Emily's closes are extremely unrealistic from a standpoint of "how could she afford that." Whatever it's flaws, its so fun to watch.
It's absolutely romanticized. I've been to Paris many times, for weeks and months, and stopped to enjoy the city very soon due to the unsafety and arrogancy of some people. The city is gorgeous, but I fell in love with Lisbon which is the most beautiful but underrated city in Europe.
I'm a guy from New York who is dual citizenship (Franco-American). In any case, I watch the show for pure escapism and scenery. It's easy to digest. There are some generalizations that are true and others that are over-exaggerated or romanticized. It's like watching Sex and the City and people thinking it's 100% NYC. Good video to make people aware without completely downing the show.

I don’t think Emily in Paris was made to be a documentary on moving to Paris… I was under the impression it was entertainment.. and it was entertaining… not to be taken so seriously…
Haha it's definitely made for entertainment, but there's been an increase of interest in moving to Paris since the series came out so I'm just sharing my experience to help those people who might want to move 😉
No, but it DOES CREATE FALSE EXPECTATIONS ABOUT HOW REAL LIFE IS HERE. Seems like you forgot that part. Probably you’re well aware that it’s just fiction but now literally hundreds if not thousands of naive young girls and women think that if they move here soon they’re gonna have that exact same fairy tale life of pivoines, croissants, and haute couture outfits to go to work. 🙄🙄 And of course the ideal apartment quickly. Which is ridiculous. I think the person who explained all the points in the video is doing just fine so delusional people stop painting fiction as reality. Ok Instagram I’m just tired of those women who show their fake life here as if it was something accurate which is not.
Not the point though. Entertainment is entertainment BUT the industry evolved so much through the years. This is the era where you just cannot make something like Sex and the City as unrealistic representation/portrayal and get away with it. Especially when some people actually believe in what they see this "unrealism" can be harmful.
I really went in with an open mind for watching Emily in Paris but after three episodes I hated every minute of it! Went over to Amanda the Jedi and a few others to see if they had watched the whole series, they all hated it too. To be completely honest, my parents went back to our home in Oslo, PT and while walking about they met a group of people, who seemed leaned towards joking and making fun of our culture and language. Two of them were college students who planned to move to Portugal for studying. My dad and mum walked away from them feeling upset about how ignorant and disrespectful those guys and girls were. Paris, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Croatia and Britain all have grand and rich cultures and their languages are truly beautiful. I have been to Paris in 2017. It's a shame that some people are not willing to be more respectful and self-educated, and aware that their language is not the only language in this world. Thank you for sharing this vlog!

You're right, Europe is so rich in culture we are truly lucky to live here :) I've just finished watching season 3 of Emily in Paris and I feel like they've toned down the stereotypes a little this season and are more focused on the character's relationships but Emily is still living a fantasy life in many ways lol.
I have been to France several times just bc I love the country for its architecture, food, language, etc. I have designed my home in the French Country style. I will never get enough of France just to fill my photographic heart's content. My love of the French Language has inspired me to try to learn it little by little since my first language has Latin roots anyway. However, in my experience, I rarely encountered any tourists who didn't try to learn how to say the simplest phrases. I keep on reading/hearing complaints fr some French people about tourists not learning how to say thank you, or any other phrase in French. Why? I can understand how upsetting those college students' behavior was and that was unacceptable. On the other hand, one of France's main industries is tourism which generates a whole lot of funds, particularly for Paris. I think some humility and gratitude would behoove this frame of mind and just leave some ignorant tourists alone for having the willingness to spend their hard-earned money in their cities. I have traveled all over the world and this type of complaint I have heard only fr the French who I hear whining that tourists didn't learn how to say [bon jour, au revoir, merci, etc] while visiting their country. France isn't the center of the world either. There will always be rude and ignorant travelers wherever you go in the world and that will be a fact of life. I watch Emily for its entertainment value and accept that it's a fantasy. The tv show will not be as entertaining if not for the exaggerations. I love that it takes me back to Paris and to watch a lot of bombastic attires that I will never wear. That's Hollywood. I read books, watch documentaries, or these types of videos if I really want to learn about any culture.
I find emily's style unattractive, but I love camille and mindy's style very much. I hate that I love the show, but it brings me to Paris in an accessible, voyeuristic way, so I am hooked.
Yes I love Camille's style also and Mindy wears some lovely pieces too. Haha I get it - it's good entertainment, easy to watch, with great scenery and it's not meant to be taken seriously either! 😁
I am french, I live in the suburb of Paris. The expression "Madame pipi" is truely employed in France. All the french people know this expression and use it to talk about the ladies who are in the toilet (in public place) to watch over, more often in night club. I'm sorry for my bad english but I wanted to say that this fact in the sitcom is true 😉
Completely agree. I'm Belgian and lived for years in Paris 5th arroundissement and disagree with most of what she says (appart for the rats anr the pee)
I work at a french speaking preschool in Sweden and I know this is not the same thing as moving to France from another country, but I just wanted to mention that all the french people I've met through this job, both colleagues and parents, have all been super sweet and kind. So this thing about french people being rude seems to be an exaggeration mixed with a language barrier.
Thanks for sharing your experience :) Yeah I'd say it's more of a stereotype about Parisians than about all French people and I guess that's the problem with stereotypes, they're huge generalisations so there are always exceptions. My experience has been positive overall and as my french improved, my experience with the locals also improved. I would also guess that anyone who travels or moves abroad is open-minded and more interested in meeting new people :)
Agreed, I’ve only met politeness and kindness in Paris and France through my 30 years of visiting France, except once from a waiter but he was not even French lol. It’s generally recommended to do your homework before visiting any country. An example in France would be when you approach a person, you always start by saying “bonjour madame” - also in shops. This is considered as good manners and respectful since you want something from a person like asking for directions or information of other kind. And I can’t even speak French apart from the basics. But today most people speak English and want to practice as well. In earlier days I was directed to the nearest English speaking person:).
enjoyed the video. I left Canada and moved to Budapest Hungary, its beautiful, clean, and very affordable. I have been to Paris in the past and went there with a French person and I found most folks rude and unwelcoming and I don't say this lightly. It is also so very expensive!
I've been to Budapest once and I loved it! We went ice skating near the hot spring baths and also went to the baths during the day. Such a beautiful city, tad cold though in the winter haha 🥶 Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thank you Cecile for your well- thought view of life in France. I am a French, living overseas and enjoyed listening to you. Now, about the "Madame Pipi": you are young and expat therefore you may not know it but years, years ago in Paris, you would have those ladies who would clean the public or department stores' toilets and always be around, gathering a small fee to let access to the toilet. It was about 50 centimes at the time. You always had to carry change with you to use the public toilets. These ladies were very self assertive (had to be with sometimes obnoxious customers...) and indeed were called "Madame Pipi". I only knew them by that name, all during my childhood. C'était la vie...Mind you, thanks to them, you were sure to always find the toilets spick and span. Don't assume they have entirely disappeared. They did for a while but then recently, during a viit to France, I found one working in a train station or a department store, I forget... I was glad to pay for super clean toilets. I guess the owners of those places realized that these wonderful ladies are the only way to make sure that we are able to feel at ease in clean, secure toilets. Because, sorry to say but, French people are not good at keeping toilets nor any public places clean. We are alas, very unlike Japanese people... Incidentally, my dad used to tell me that the "Madame Pipi" would make good money with the tips they received. Voilà, that was my little contribution to your very insightful take on life in France. My husband and I did a 10 day trip to France including Paris, Lyon and Riviera. My husband (American) learnt French as the second language and practiced it wherever he went. I sort of remember someone told me that French hates English speakers so I picked up basic vocabs on food and the most important phrase "parlez vous anglais?". The Parisians we met are all very friendly. One shop assistant in an electronic shop even enthusiastically talked to us in English. I guess they are friendly because we tried our best and it was off peak season or the less visited places. We tried to avoid the most popular attractions because I don't like crowds.

Yeah it's pretty accurately portrayed in the series. The weather is Paris is veryyyy unpredictable. This summer was incredibly hot. I have a portable AC in my place because it heats up like an oven, but usually there are only 1-2 weeks of the year which are really unbearable. Paris in August is completely empty of Parisians who are all on vacation 😎
Living in France now! With my French husband. Found all the excessive romantic stereotypes annoying (like how the series seems to imply that affairs are normal and accepted) that’s not been my experience of the French people I’ve met here, for many family is paramount (and they have a much better work life balance than elsewhere). They are wary of new people but remain generally friendly if you try to chat in French with them although it is difficult to build lasting deeper friendships. Just keep trying!
I television, in general, peoples wardrobe and homes are frequently above what their salaries would be able to afford. Like Emily in Paris, Friends, ect. They are not documentaries, but enjoyable because many of us can’ t afford those wardrobes, and travel. I have been to Paris, twice, but my health and financial situation, in retirement, means that I love the fantasy in TV shows and movies that show lovely countryside and internationally loved cities and vacation spots, that are out of reach right now, for me.
I‘m from Switzerland (German part) and everyone here hates the French language sooooo much, we have been traumatized at school for years haha. I have been to Paris a couple of times a few years ago but only for short trips. I hate Paris! Don‘t get me wrong, there are beautiful places but I found it soooo hard to get along with the public transport and I always got lost. Ok we didn‘t have smartphones back then but I have never been in such a chaotic city. Also I was very scared in the evening, sexually assaulted and felt very very unsafe. I hope it‘s better now. And every time I spoke French to someone they responded in English and my French is pretty good, better than English at that time. But I love Emily in Paris. It doesn‘t matter if it‘s realistic, it‘s like a fantasy world, it doesn‘t have to be realistic for me.

I lived in Founex for 2 years. It always amused me that the French speaking Swiss and the German speaking Swiss refused to speak each others' language. But none of them talked to me. I found that the French outside of Paris were very friendly and warm.

I find Emily's sense of fashion outrageous and disturbing... so American. Like an american "wannabe" Parisian. As far as I know, French people are like "less is more" type. Their sense of fashion is elegant, minimalist but classy. I like Sylvie, so chic, elegant and so French. :)
As an American of French ancestors I spent a bit of time in Paris, but majority in Nancy to Strasbourg. Paris in September was actually really clean, and safe. As someone who speaks a decent amount of French I felt very respected while Parisian restaurant workers liked that I was using French. There was one time where there was a dude in Paris that took a leak in public. So yes it’s true on that. For people visiting France please use the nearby restroom because it’s not like Germany or the Netherlands with as many public WC’s.
Hi, I'm french, 64, born and living near Paris ( 10km North ) my father was born in Paris. I go every week in Paris since décades and decades I can say Dame Pipi or Madame Pipi is correct. Not told every day by citizens, but 100% correct.

As an adopted Parisian for almost 8 years. Thank you. I am so tired of the cliché and the “pink-glitter washing” of this city. It’s beautiful yes, but it’s very hard to live here. When I moved to Paris I was very very young and I remember I decided it from a prior experience of having come and seen the city but I quickly noticed then it was gonna be incredibly tough. I spend some months preparing myself mentally for how it was going to be and when I came to stay, I knew it was going to be incredibly tough, hard, and i even almost lost my life here ( one day I’ll tell my story) but I sticked to this place cause since the first moment I knew I belonged here, obviously there’s a price to pay and the reality is that is not pink and bright and sparkly and sooooo easy as many delusional people think it is after seeing those girls on Instagram with their fake lives or their ( rich lifestyle) (of course with money life is easy everywhere) and also after watching this série. Paris is not Disneyland, folks. Assimilate it.

They sell a dream , that makes people compare their real life with what they see in movies or series, so it is nice to have authentic content on the subject. I've visited Paris for a week once and the most vivid impression I got was the smell. The freaking Louvre smells of urine! I've never had a romanticised view of Paris, but god was that underwhelming...
I visited only once too and was robbed of just about everything within a few hours. Parisians were most unhelpful. I gave up on the rest of the trip and went to Italy. People there were much friendlier. Haven't been back to Paris, not interested in the arrogance.

Wondering what your thoughts are about Mindy's description in the first episode that people are mean to your face? When we were there for a family trip several years ago, definitely found this to be the case and it was quite upsetting. But wasn't sure if they were reacting to our race or whether people are just generally like that in Paris.
If i had to generalise, I'd say people are more honest or blunt, which I actually appreciate because I am also naturally quite direct. Whereas in London/Australia, for example, the shop assistant will call you honey or darling and it just feels so insincere to me. I think it depends on the circumstances, if you knew the person or just met. Strangers might be a bit standoffish to begin with but most of the French people I know personally are lovely.

French language, music and culture bring joy to life (especially in COVID) "joie de vivre". Bruno Gourey (Luc) is a very experienced actor and all the acteurs de soutien (support actors) are great. My favourite scene is Luc taking Emily to French theatre/movie. In Australia there are lots of ways to enjoy French culture - such as meetups, French associations (FACCI), Music (I love Pomme) and speaking French with friends (such as with my local Mauritian cafe owner), language apps and art galleries. .
I love Paris. Tried learning French but its such a difficult language for someone who is quite elderly like me. I also so love the South of France. Beautiful and blessed country!!
Yes it's not an easy language, definitely best to be immersed in the language by living in a French-speaking country. Yes, there is stunning scenery in France!

I am a Parisian ! Madame Pipi’s term has always existed and is quite familiar in a nice way. There is no offense here. This way of calling them this way is part of our culture in Paris. There is no disrespect, it’s a nickname sort of. Regarding the style, of you work in fashion, PR, it is very common, here again even though not every body is dressed like in the show, this is no surprise at all to me. Regarding the hairstyle, I have long hair. The weather has never bothered me, you just need to adapt your hair product ! Most people in Paris now speak English ! Regarding the people working in stores or restaurants, their behavior has improved very much and will welcome you with great pleasure.
You need to understand how it works for some companies. She could live that lifestyle in Paris. I did it for years. My company moved me out there, and as such they also paid all my expenses while I was overseas.
I had only been to Paris once, and I don’t even count that as a visit, because it was just a layover in the airport. I really don’t speak much French at all, but have found that when I travel to other countries if I can say certain phrases, and exchange pleasantries this is sufficient to be treated well by locals. Would you say this is the case in Paris?
Greetings are very important in French culture - always say hello before placing an order in a restaurant/boulangerie/bar. "Please" and "thank you" go a long way as well, and a "how are you" doesn't hurt either! I think if you know these basic phrases you should be met with a warmer response. But like all bustling cities, some people are just in a rush and won't take the time to stop and give directions, for example, or try to understand your broken French..
been to Paris last May and i can say other than my iPhone box, i left my heart too and i'm itching to get it back. French are warm and even though i don't really speak French, but approaching French by the common phrases like "bonjour", "bonsoir" and "excuse-moi" really helps me a lot even if i were to speak english after i got their attention

Nice way to present, but… There’s so much you don’t know, girl! Outdoor parties at cour privée, much more spacious chambre de bonne in luxury buildings, cheap flowers outside of supermarkets (even in the heart of Paris), Madame Pipi, bicycling with high heels (not just walking), and make up secrets for humid weather…
WRONG= When I first came to Paris I had access easily to designer clothes at dirt cheap prices, there were a couple of shops that sold direct from the factories in Italy multiple labels...I also had access to fabrics, so all one needs is a friend or two that work in fashion and you can get into the soldes privée....walls are not paper thin unless it is a modern wall. Haussmannian buildings have brick walls, a brick is about 10cm/4 inches wide...the thinner walls would be in the chambres de bonnes where the put up stud and mortar walls when there wasn't a brick or stone wall underneath. I've been to a couple of dinner parties outside, and picnics all over the place, I guess it's just a question of the circle of friends and their level of income as well as their cultural background. Paris has become very high crime, but back in the 80's and 90's it wasn't so bad..... If you move to another country, make sure you have working papers/residents visa or student visa!!!
i found emily in paris to be very shallow, and could be a show for very immature girls. having lived in St. Germain en Laye, outside paris when i was 6 and 7 years old and again when i was 19 years old, i found far too many things just off and overly exaggerated about the parisiens, emily, and all of the other characters. just too dumb for words. i did enjoy your explanations and ideas, all the way to your outline. well done.
I heard a rumor that the French do not pick up after their dogs when they take them for a walk and it can make the sidewalks disgusting. Is that true or just scuttlebutt?
I think it varies... I definitely have a habit of watching where I am walking on the footpaths here for this very reason, but responsible dog owners do pick up after their dogs. The footpaths are definitely less clean than in Australia though..
I like the fashion and location but Emily was a hot mess and did a lot of stupid things with guys. Didn't like that aspect. She didn't make Americans look good. I know it's entertainment but still. I enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing.
There is a "Madame pipi" on each chic brasserie in Paris and this the name they are given to! . Thtat's not an unrealistic thing but an old coutume. Best
La dame pipi does exist. The customers gives her money in exchange for cleaning the bathrooms. However, I did not see any for a while and it is a quite childish way of saying "cleaning lady". It actually made me uncomfortable to hear it from grown up ladies.
If French bureaucracy is anything like the Italian, then you gonna wanna bang your head on the wall. It was a challenge to open a bank account, get a tax code and residency permit and I had to speak Italian for all of those.
As french, it's simple : the show is realistic if you are wealthy... you dont need to leave 1st, 2, 3, 4... 8th arrondissement... life is a postcard. The unrealistic part is the wickedness of people... us citizen are loved in France.
Haha yes for sure, living anywhere from the 1st-8th + 16th arrondissement is a whole different experience! Yeah I have found that especially the younger generations make an effort to speak English with expats and of course if an expat tries to speak French that is usually met with kindness and encouragement.

Me sind my friend went to Paris for a 3Days Vacation since it was our first time we got lost many times and sad thing about Parisian People if you Approached them to ask help to find our way or the exact Street they refuses to Helped us because we dont talk French eventhow they Understand English they wu'd never Talked and Helped you . Instead they will told you to Speak thier Language to be willing to Help or talked to us and we Try to ask many Parisian People no One Helped us.. They even come to Germany and maked you Undertood thier Language .
I agree Emily in Paris is not a documentary, if someone wants to move to Paris based on Emily in Paris. Based on her outfits, job or other factors that mentioned in your video then that person is stupid. You don’t want to watch the show if Mindy dress up the way described, people want to feel happy knowing that it is a show for entertainment not a documentary. The video you created is informative, thank you. But the criticism that you made pointing out small details about salary and dressing are unnecessary. Just enjoy the show and take on some actual documentaries
Emily in Paris is obviously for entertainment purposes only.. They exaggerate things, and over dress the actresses mainly. I mean look at the way they dress in the series, it's as if they are always going to a runway fashion show most of the times. And they always have this hooking, partying, vacationing etc. most of the times which is not happening in real life, unless you are really rich.

Madame pipi is more of a Belgian thing. Also, I didn't like this show at all, however the portrayal was realistic for a very wealthy expat. I know of a few in my industry who are living just like her. But I work in beauty and fashion that's nepotism central.
Thank you for this video I enjoyed even though I'm French and I'm not currently planning to love abroad! ;) About "Dame Pipi", it did use to be a popular expression when I was a child in the 90s, but it kind of disappeared, I guess because the job itself became more and more rare (it used to be in restaurants, in bars etc., now it's only in airports, I'd say). It was indeed a very ugly way of calling this hard job. The other thing I hate is the lack of diversity: our city is a very multicultural and diverse place, and I think that's one of the beautiful things about it! I just always thought it was strange that they were separate because in Australia all the papers are signed during one wedding ceremony. A funny thing I learned just a few days ago about weddings in France: until very recently (2008, I think), both spouses had to have 2 medical appointments before they could get married. Paris smelled more of pee back in 1998... believe me, it may smell of pee now but it has cleaned up since then! I wouldn't normally notice except my parisian friend asked me when I last visited her. I have never been groped but I did encounter some dubious characters around the metro. I think I learnt from the French women how to avoid them. BTW I have never seen Emily in Paris! I don't think I could live there but I love visiting. There are tonnes of French people in Sydney these days and I meet tonnes and have dated a few French and Parisian guys here. Some of the guys complained to me that apparently we (Aussie women) don't find them attractive and we are "difficult to date"!
It’s a tv show. Everything is exaggerated. Lol I live in paris now from the 🇺🇸 and I don’t romanticize it I just watch it in French to improve my French. The show itself is not great. I’ve been here for 8 months and I know very basic French because EVERYONE including my French boyfriend speaks ENGLISH. It sucks lol but they want to practice English. My first apartment here is 57m2 and very modern. I can’t hear anything from my neighbors.

I'm a French-speaking Canadian, not into fashion at all & I very much dislike Parisians as a whole but I binge-watch Emily in Paris, every seasons. I know that most of it (especially all the understandable English speaking people is very unreal.) is romanticized. I agree that the architecture is gorgeous. For me, I totally fell in love with Ireland. Love your video, strait to the point. I'm sure it will help anyone who wishes to move there. So true about the people working in the hospitality industry. I can't get over how rude they are! I experienced it decades ago when I had the audacity to ask a question at someone working at the info desk at the train station!I think it's true at any touristy city in France. Experienced it many times in Nice....maybe because I'm a french speaker, maybe if it was a foreign langage to me, I would've been better received.
I love Emily in Paris. It's a fantasy. Most shows are unrealistic with fashion and the apartments the characters live in. Emily's closes are extremely unrealistic from a standpoint of "how could she afford that." Whatever it's flaws, its so fun to watch.
It's absolutely romanticized. I've been to Paris many times, for weeks and months, and stopped to enjoy the city very soon due to the unsafety and arrogancy of some people. The city is gorgeous, but I fell in love with Lisbon which is the most beautiful but underrated city in Europe.
I'm a guy from New York who is dual citizenship (Franco-American). In any case, I watch the show for pure escapism and scenery. It's easy to digest. There are some generalizations that are true and others that are over-exaggerated or romanticized. It's like watching Sex and the City and people thinking it's 100% NYC. Good video to make people aware without completely downing the show.

No, but it DOES CREATE FALSE EXPECTATIONS ABOUT HOW REAL LIFE IS HERE. Seems like you forgot that part. Probably you’re well aware that it’s just fiction but now literally hundreds if not thousands of naive young girls and women think that if they move here soon they’re gonna have that exact same fairy tale life of pivoines, croissants, and haute couture outfits to go to work. 🙄🙄 And of course the ideal apartment quickly. Which is ridiculous. I think the person who explained all the points in the video is doing just fine so delusional people stop painting fiction as reality. Ok Instagram I’m just tired of those women who show their fake life here as if it was something accurate which is not.

Not the point though. Entertainment is entertainment BUT the industry evolved so much through the years. This is the era where you just cannot make something like Sex and the City as unrealistic representation/portrayal and get away with it. Especially when some people actually believe in what they see this "unrealism" can be harmful.

I really went in with an open mind for watching Emily in Paris but after three episodes I hated every minute of it! Went over to Amanda the Jedi and a few others to see if they had watched the whole series, they all hated it too.
To be completely honest, my parents went back to our home in Oslo, PT and while walking about they met a group of people, who seemed leaned towards joking and making fun of our culture and language. Two of them were college students who planned to move to Portugal for studying. My dad and mum walked away from them feeling upset about how ignorant and disrespectful those guys and girls were.
Paris, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Croatia and Britain all have grand and rich cultures and their languages are truly beautiful. I have been to Paris in 2017. It's a shame that some people are not willing to be more respectful and self-educated, and aware that their language is not the only language in this world. Thank you for sharing this vlog!

I've just finished watching season 3 of Emily in Paris and I feel like they've toned down the stereotypes a little this season and are more focused on the character's relationships but Emily is still living a fantasy life in many ways lol.
I have been to France several times just bc I love the country for its architecture, food, language, etc. I have designed my home in the French Country style. I will never get enough of France just to fill my photographic heart's content. My love of the French Language has inspired me to try to learn it little by little since my first language has Latin roots anyway. However, in my experience, I rarely encountered any tourists who didn't try to learn how to say the simplest phrases. I keep on reading/hearing complaints fr some French people about tourists not learning how to say thank you, or any other phrase in French. Why?
I can understand how upsetting those college students' behavior was and that was unacceptable. On the other hand, one of France's main industries is tourism which generates a whole lot of funds, particularly for Paris. I think some humility and gratitude would behoove this frame of mind and just leave some ignorant tourists alone for having the willingness to spend their hard-earned money in their cities. I have traveled all over the world and this type of complaint I have heard only fr the French who I hear whining that tourists didn't learn how to say [bon jour, au revoir, merci, etc] while visiting their country. France isn't the center of the world either. There will always be rude and ignorant travelers wherever you go in the world and that will be a fact of life.
I watch Emily for its entertainment value and accept that it's a fantasy. The tv show will not be as entertaining if not for the exaggerations. I love that it takes me back to Paris and to watch a lot of bombastic attires that I will never wear. That's Hollywood. I read books, watch documentaries, or these types of videos if I really want to learn about any culture.
I find emily's style unattractive, but I love camille and mindy's style very much. I hate that I love the show, but it brings me to Paris in an accessible, voyeuristic way, so I am hooked.
Yes I love Camille's style also and Mindy wears some lovely pieces too.

I am french, I live in the suburb of Paris. The expression "Madame pipi" is truely employed in France. All the french people know this expression and use it to talk about the ladies who are in the toilet (in public place) to watch over, more often in night club. I'm sorry for my bad english but I wanted to say that this fact in the sitcom is true 😉

Completely agree. I'm Belgian and lived for years in Paris 5th arroundissement and disagree with most of what she says (appart for the rats anr the pee)
I work at a french speaking preschool in Sweden and I know this is not the same thing as moving to France from another country, but I just wanted to mention that all the french people I've met through this job, both colleagues and parents, have all been super sweet and kind. So this thing about french people being rude seems to be an exaggeration mixed with a language barrier.

Yeah I'd say it's more of a stereotype about Parisians than about all French people and I guess that's the problem with stereotypes, they're huge generalisations so there are always exceptions. My experience has been positive overall and as my french improved, my experience with the locals also improved. I would also guess that anyone who travels or moves abroad is open-minded and more interested in meeting new people :)
Agreed, I’ve only met politeness and kindness in Paris and France through my 30 years of visiting France, except once from a waiter but he was not even French lol.
It’s generally recommended to do your homework before visiting any country.
An example in France would be when you approach a person, you always start by saying “bonjour madame” - also in shops. This is considered as good manners and respectful since you want something from a person like asking for directions or information of other kind.
And I can’t even speak French apart from the basics. But today most people speak English and want to practice as well. In earlier days I was directed to the nearest English speaking person:).
I lived in Paris for over 20 years, and I was actually only 13 when I moved there. Your review is mostly true & honest 😀

enjoyed the video. I left Canada and moved to Budapest Hungary, its beautiful, clean, and very affordable. I have been to Paris in the past and went there with a French person and I found most folks rude and unwelcoming and I don't say this lightly. It is also so very expensive!
I've been to Budapest once and I loved it! We went ice skating near the hot spring baths and also went to the baths during the day. Such a beautiful city, tad cold though in the winter haha 🥶 Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thank you Cecile for your well- thought view of life in France. I am a French, living overseas and enjoyed listening to you. Now, about the "Madame Pipi": you are young and expat therefore you may not know it but years, years ago in Paris, you would have those ladies who would clean the public or department stores' toilets and always be around, gathering a small fee to let access to the toilet. It was about 50 centimes at the time. You always had to carry change with you to use the public toilets. These ladies were very self assertive (had to be with sometimes obnoxious customers...) and indeed were called "Madame Pipi". I only knew them by that name, all during my childhood. C'était la vie...Mind you, thanks to them, you were sure to always find the toilets spick and span.
Don't assume they have entirely disappeared. They did for a while but then recently, during a viit to France, I found one working in a train station or a department store, I forget... I was glad to pay for super clean toilets. I guess the owners of those places realized that these wonderful ladies are the only way to make sure that we are able to feel at ease in clean, secure toilets. Because, sorry to say but, French people are not good at keeping toilets nor any public places clean. We are alas, very unlike Japanese people...
Incidentally, my dad used to tell me that the "Madame Pipi" would make good money with the tips they received. Voilà, that was my little contribution to your very insightful take on life in France. Bon courage ! 😉

My husband and I did a 10 day trip to France including Paris, Lyon and Riviera. My husband (American) learnt French as the second language and practiced it wherever he went. I sort of remember someone told me that French hates English speakers so I picked up basic vocabs on food and the most important phrase "parlez vous anglais?". The Parisians we met are all very friendly. One shop assistant in an electronic shop even enthusiastically talked to us in English. I guess they are friendly because we tried our best and it was off peak season or the less visited places. We tried to avoid the most popular attractions because I don't like crowds.

Yeah it's pretty accurately portrayed in the series. The weather is Paris is veryyyy unpredictable. This summer was incredibly hot. I have a portable AC in my place because it heats up like an oven, but usually there are only 1-2 weeks of the year which are really unbearable. Paris in August is completely empty of Parisians who are all on vacation 😎
Living in France now! With my French husband. Found all the excessive romantic stereotypes annoying (like how the series seems to imply that affairs are normal and accepted) that’s not been my experience of the French people I’ve met here, for many family is paramount (and they have a much better work life balance than elsewhere). They are wary of new people but remain generally friendly if you try to chat in French with them although it is difficult to build lasting deeper friendships. Just keep trying!

I television, in general, peoples wardrobe and homes are frequently above what their salaries would be able to afford. Like Emily in Paris, Friends, ect. They are not documentaries, but enjoyable because many of us can’ t afford those wardrobes, and travel. I have been to Paris, twice, but my health and financial situation, in retirement, means that I love the fantasy in TV shows and movies that show lovely countryside and internationally loved cities and vacation spots, that are out of reach right now, for me.
I‘m from Switzerland (German part) and everyone here hates the French language sooooo much, we have been traumatized at school for years haha. I have been to Paris a couple of times a few years ago but only for short trips. I hate Paris! Don‘t get me wrong, there are beautiful places but I found it soooo hard to get along with the public transport and I always got lost. Ok we didn‘t have smartphones back then but I have never been in such a chaotic city. Also I was very scared in the evening, sexually assaulted and felt very very unsafe. I hope it‘s better now. And every time I spoke French to someone they responded in English and my French is pretty good, better than English at that time. But I love Emily in Paris. It doesn‘t matter if it‘s realistic, it‘s like a fantasy world, it doesn‘t have to be realistic for me.

I lived in Founex for 2 years. It always amused me that the French speaking Swiss and the German speaking Swiss refused to speak each others' language. But none of them talked to me. I found that the French outside of Paris were very friendly and warm.

"Dame Pipi" is a real and very common french expression, but we don't use it in front of her.
I find Emily's sense of fashion outrageous and disturbing... so American. Like an american "wannabe" Parisian. As far as I know, French people are like "less is more" type. Their sense of fashion is elegant, minimalist but classy. I like Sylvie, so chic, elegant and so French. :)

As an American of French ancestors I spent a bit of time in Paris, but majority in Nancy to Strasbourg. Paris in September was actually really clean, and safe. As someone who speaks a decent amount of French I felt very respected while Parisian restaurant workers liked that I was using French. There was one time where there was a dude in Paris that took a leak in public. So yes it’s true on that. For people visiting France please use the nearby restroom because it’s not like Germany or the Netherlands with as many public WC’s.
Yes, good point, most restaurants/brasseries/bars will let you pop in to use the bathroom if you ask nicely.
Hi, I'm french, 64, born and living near Paris ( 10km North ) my father was born in Paris. I go every week in Paris since décades and decades I can say Dame Pipi or Madame Pipi is correct. Not told every day by citizens, but 100% correct.

As an adopted Parisian for almost 8 years. Thank you. I am so tired of the cliché and the “pink-glitter washing” of this city. It’s beautiful yes, but it’s very hard to live here. When I moved to Paris I was very very young and I remember I decided it from a prior experience of having come and seen the city but I quickly noticed then it was gonna be incredibly tough. I spend some months preparing myself mentally for how it was going to be and when I came to stay, I knew it was going to be incredibly tough, hard, and i even almost lost my life here ( one day I’ll tell my story) but I sticked to this place cause since the first moment I knew I belonged here, obviously there’s a price to pay and the reality is that is not pink and bright and sparkly and sooooo easy as many delusional people think it is after seeing those girls on Instagram with their fake lives or their ( rich lifestyle) (of course with money life is easy everywhere) and also after watching this série. Paris is not Disneyland, folks. Assimilate it.

I've visited Paris for a week once and the most vivid impression I got was the smell. The freaking Louvre smells of urine! I've never had a romanticised view of Paris, but god was that underwhelming...

I visited only once too and was robbed of just about everything within a few hours. Parisians were most unhelpful. I gave up on the rest of the trip and went to Italy. People there were much friendlier. Haven't been back to Paris, not interested in the arrogance.

Wondering what your thoughts are about Mindy's description in the first episode that people are mean to your face? When we were there for a family trip several years ago, definitely found this to be the case and it was quite upsetting. But wasn't sure if they were reacting to our race or whether people are just generally like that in Paris.
If i had to generalise, I'd say people are more honest or blunt, which I actually appreciate because I am also naturally quite direct. Whereas in London/Australia, for example, the shop assistant will call you honey or darling and it just feels so insincere to me.
I think it depends on the circumstances, if you knew the person or just met. Strangers might be a bit standoffish to begin with but most of the French people I know personally are lovely.

French language, music and culture bring joy to life (especially in COVID) "joie de vivre". Bruno Gourey (Luc) is a very experienced actor and all the acteurs de soutien (support actors) are great. My favourite scene is Luc taking Emily to French theatre/movie. In Australia there are lots of ways to enjoy French culture - such as meetups, French associations (FACCI), Music (I love Pomme) and speaking French with friends (such as with my local Mauritian cafe owner), language apps and art galleries. .

I am a Parisian ! Madame Pipi’s term has always existed and is quite familiar in a nice way. There is no offense here. This way of calling them this way is part of our culture in Paris. There is no disrespect, it’s a nickname sort of.
Regarding the style, of you work in fashion, PR, it is very common, here again even though not every body is dressed like in the show, this is no surprise at all to me.
Regarding the hairstyle, I have long hair. The weather has never bothered me, you just need to adapt your hair product !
Most people in Paris now speak English !
Regarding the people working in stores or restaurants, their behavior has improved very much and will welcome you with great pleasure.
You need to understand how it works for some companies. She could live that lifestyle in Paris. I did it for years. My company moved me out there, and as such they also paid all my expenses while I was overseas.
I had only been to Paris once, and I don’t even count that as a visit, because it was just a layover in the airport. I really don’t speak much French at all, but have found that when I travel to other countries if I can say certain phrases, and exchange pleasantries this is sufficient to be treated well by locals. Would you say this is the case in Paris?
Greetings are very important in French culture - always say hello before placing an order in a restaurant/boulangerie/bar. "Please" and "thank you" go a long way as well, and a "how are you" doesn't hurt either! I think if you know these basic phrases you should be met with a warmer response. But like all bustling cities, some people are just in a rush and won't take the time to stop and give directions, for example, or try to understand your broken French..

been to Paris last May and i can say other than my iPhone box, i left my heart too and i'm itching to get it back. French are warm and even though i don't really speak French, but approaching French by the common phrases like "bonjour", "bonsoir" and "excuse-moi" really helps me a lot even if i were to speak english after i got their attention

Nice way to present, but… There’s so much you don’t know, girl! Outdoor parties at cour privée, much more spacious chambre de bonne in luxury buildings, cheap flowers outside of supermarkets (even in the heart of Paris), Madame Pipi, bicycling with high heels (not just walking), and make up secrets for humid weather…

I went to Paris and it was nice definitely not disappointed. I expected to a see a pretty city and I saw one. I can’t complain about that.

WRONG= When I first came to Paris I had access easily to designer clothes at dirt cheap prices, there were a couple of shops that sold direct from the factories in Italy multiple labels...I also had access to fabrics, so all one needs is a friend or two that work in fashion and you can get into the soldes privée....walls are not paper thin unless it is a modern wall. Haussmannian buildings have brick walls, a brick is about 10cm/4 inches wide...the thinner walls would be in the chambres de bonnes where the put up stud and mortar walls when there wasn't a brick or stone wall underneath. I've been to a couple of dinner parties outside, and picnics all over the place, I guess it's just a question of the circle of friends and their level of income as well as their cultural background. Paris has become very high crime, but back in the 80's and 90's it wasn't so bad.....
If you move to another country, make sure you have working papers/residents visa or student visa!!!

i found emily in paris to be very shallow, and could be a show for very immature girls. having lived in St. Germain en Laye, outside paris when i was 6 and 7 years old and again when i was 19 years old, i found far too many things just off and overly exaggerated about the parisiens, emily, and all of the other characters. just too dumb for words.

I heard a rumor that the French do not pick up after their dogs when they take them for a walk and it can make the sidewalks disgusting. Is that true or just scuttlebutt?
I think it varies... I definitely have a habit of watching where I am walking on the footpaths here for this very reason, but responsible dog owners do pick up after their dogs. The footpaths are definitely less clean than in Australia though..
I like the fashion and location but Emily was a hot mess and did a lot of stupid things with guys. Didn't like that aspect. She didn't make Americans look good. I know it's entertainment but still. I enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing.

There is a "Madame pipi" on each chic brasserie in Paris and this the name they are given to! . Thtat's not an unrealistic thing but an old coutume. Best
La dame pipi does exist. The customers gives her money in exchange for cleaning the bathrooms. However, I did not see any for a while and it is a quite childish way of saying "cleaning lady". It actually made me uncomfortable to hear it from grown up ladies.
Add that the metro feels dangerous and dirty.
Yeah definitely depends which line you take, but certain stations/lines are dirtier/feel less safe. Steer clear of line 13 anyway haha 😅
If French bureaucracy is anything like the Italian, then you gonna wanna bang your head on the wall. It was a challenge to open a bank account, get a tax code and residency permit and I had to speak Italian for all of those.
As french, it's simple : the show is realistic if you are wealthy... you dont need to leave 1st, 2, 3, 4... 8th arrondissement... life is a postcard.
The unrealistic part is the wickedness of people... us citizen are loved in France.
Haha yes for sure, living anywhere from the 1st-8th + 16th arrondissement is a whole different experience! Yeah I have found that especially the younger generations make an effort to speak English with expats and of course if an expat tries to speak French that is usually met with kindness and encouragement.

Me sind my friend went to Paris for a 3Days Vacation since it was our first time we got lost many times and sad thing about Parisian People if you Approached them to ask help to find our way or the exact Street they refuses to Helped us because we dont talk French eventhow they Understand English they wu'd never Talked and Helped you . Instead they will told you to Speak thier Language to be willing to Help or talked to us and we Try to ask many Parisian People no One Helped us.. They even come to Germany and maked you Undertood thier Language .

I agree Emily in Paris is not a documentary, if someone wants to move to Paris based on Emily in Paris. Based on her outfits, job or other factors that mentioned in your video then that person is stupid.
You don’t want to watch the show if Mindy dress up the way described, people want to feel happy knowing that it is a show for entertainment not a documentary.
The video you created is informative, thank you. But the criticism that you made pointing out small details about salary and dressing are unnecessary.

Emily in Paris is obviously for entertainment purposes only.. They exaggerate things, and over dress the actresses mainly. I mean look at the way they dress in the series, it's as if they are always going to a runway fashion show most of the times. And they always have this hooking, partying, vacationing etc. most of the times which is not happening in real life, unless you are really rich.
I hope one day I can live and dress like them hahah. 😅 I do really enjoy the series (as entertainment), especially season 3.
For me it's the complete lack of diversity with Paris' huge migrant communities like western Africans and Algerians 😳

Madame pipi is more of a Belgian thing. Also, I didn't like this show at all, however the portrayal was realistic for a very wealthy expat. I know of a few in my industry who are living just like her. But I work in beauty and fashion that's nepotism central.

About "Dame Pipi", it did use to be a popular expression when I was a child in the 90s, but it kind of disappeared, I guess because the job itself became more and more rare (it used to be in restaurants, in bars etc., now it's only in airports, I'd say).
It was indeed a very ugly way of calling this hard job.
The other thing I hate is the lack of diversity: our city is a very multicultural and diverse place, and I think that's one of the beautiful things about it! I hate that they try to make it look so white!
In the last season of Emily in Paris one other thing struck me [spoiler alert]: they almost did an illegal wedding!
In France, it's absolutely illegal to have a religious wedding before the civil one...

Paris smelled more of pee back in 1998... believe me, it may smell of pee now but it has cleaned up since then! I wouldn't normally notice except my parisian friend asked me when I last visited her. I have never been groped but I did encounter some dubious characters around the metro. I think I learnt from the French women how to avoid them. BTW I have never seen Emily in Paris! I don't think I could live there but I love visiting. There are tonnes of French people in Sydney these days and I meet tonnes and have dated a few French and Parisian guys here. Some of the guys complained to me that apparently we (Aussie women) don't find them attractive and we are "difficult to date"!

It’s a tv show. Everything is exaggerated. Lol I live in paris now from the 🇺🇸 and I don’t romanticize it I just watch it in French to improve my French. The show itself is not great. I’ve been here for 8 months and I know very basic French because EVERYONE including my French boyfriend speaks ENGLISH. It sucks lol but they want to practice English. My first apartment here is 57m2 and very modern. I can’t hear anything from my neighbors.
