I always enjoy your videos and I'm hoping you will do one that I don't think anyone else can or could do: Would you consider testing the Full Frame mirrorless 24-1xx/4 Lenses in a side by side to see which performs the best. I'd don't think anyone has ever tested a group like this - regardless of format. I'd bet you a coffee it would be quite a hit and one of your highest watched videos. Thanks again.
Thanks! That's a good idea, but cross platform tests are always plagued with issues matching bodies with everyone claiming they're unfair. What bodies and lenses would you suggest?

Thanks for this - a TB / USB4.0 enclosure that can actually cope with 'lesser' USB ports when needed is exactly what I need for my mobile workflow! Now just need to find one of these in stock somewhere...
They seem to have multiple variations with different model numbers which may do a similar thing, so check the specs on others if this one becomes hard to find.

I LOVE the heatsinks on that enclosure. i bet that will run measurably cooler, or faster with huge files than other enclosures. The price though. OUCH! I have a Sam 980 2TB waiting on my next computer build. after watching this, I'll make sure the next Board has Thunder-4. Thank you for this. Very informative!

I had a Beelink GT-King with N64/DC/PS1 each with about 30 games and all the artworks and music are there.
The second is a x86 AMD PC with GC/PSP/PS2/XBOX again each with curated by me selections of 30 games all scraped with the themes customised to perfection!
I love seeing these sorts of things covered, because there are literally millions of ways to customise Batocera themes... Making it easy to build amazing projects for very little money.
In fact I would like to see you cover something like that! I know it isn't your bread & butter type thing, but that's the point I like to see different takes and views on it, so what the end result looks like reflects the personality of the builder :)
Which background musics graphics and the selection of games you add - all come together to give a creative impression on the builder as well as showing the person you give it to, how well you know them (from how much the enjoy the games and stuff on there!)
Most of my favourite creators have already covered this, but like I say it's always useful to see other peoples styles.
I can see you doing a clean cyan theme, sticking to the original chiptunes rather than adding orchestral or modernised versions - though I have no idea what games you would choose.

The cooling fins are more important than people would expect since these drives tend to run hot. And the Samsung and their kind tend to get hotter faster and the drives have to throttle down.
Great video. I use the Sandisk drives in the field because of their ability to resist dust and water, but I ran the same tests at home with my 2021 MacBook Pro Max and you are absolutely right. I'm not getting faster than 900mb/s. I noticed with one USB-C cable, I was only getting 38mb/s! These Sandisk drives are perfect for the field, but I'm going to get a couple of the 2tb drives for working at home. Thank you for simplifying this discussion.
You're welcome, and yes it's scary when you witness the impact of some USB cables! Label your fastest ones for data!

Thank you for shedding light on the farce that is "USB Standard". The confusion of misinformation fed to customers whether intended or not, lets manufacturers enjoy profits on "new" products without having to deliver on advertised specs or innovate on their tow-the-line products.

Exactly, it is expensive but very fast! There are fortunately lots of cheaper options if you don't need this speed.

@@jamskof I'm not sure, it might be the enclosure (which includes the interface and controller). I'd check the specs for that first to see if it's the bottleneck.
Nice video Gordon. These SSDs were heavily discounted during the recent Black Friday period. Was tempted to go this route as well, but with the enclosure it's quite a bit more expensive than a T7 or Sandisk SSD...
Yes, the enclosure is expensive, but it does unlock the best speeds from these SSDs! I'd consider picking up one of the SSDs anyway if you see a good price as you can use them in portable drives, desktops, consoles etc

Worth noting you can go for a usb3.2 gen 2x2 enclosure for circa £30 and a decent nvme drive rated over 3200 MB/s for 70 quid and have the speed of the sandisk (which is fine for editing multiple 4k stream off).
Then when usb4 /tb3 enclosures fall in price upgrade the enclosure and that same nvme will be fast enough for that too.
Hopefully with ps5 specifying gen4 5500MBs for internal ssd we will see more affordable drives too (part shortage permitting)
Yes, that would be a good alternative to the SanDisk, but you'd still need a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port to get more than 1000mb/s out of it. That said, still fast enough for many tasks and still cheaper than the SanDisk, so a good suggestion!
I got one of these with a 2tb Samsung 980 Pro it's excellent for accessing my photo archive via Adobe Bridge on my m1 macbook pro. I also got a 4tb Samsung 860 evo that not as fast but great. Ideally looking in future to get a 4tb nvme with a supporting enclosure.
I started to price out a SATA III drive solution for a dual raid type enclosure only to realize that the sata, i.e. the non-NVME versions, were not only significantly harder to find, but also were just as costly as going NVME; In essence, I'd be going slower with no good benefit- a slower solution, at the same or higher price. My purpose is to build a couple of 4 TB drives just for backups without a full-on NAS. Speed itself is not the major consideration; just space, portability, and redundancy. Speed, however, is appreciated..
I use portable drives off and on, but rarely benchmark them as it's a matter of time; the one I built was because I just happened to have a spare NVME drive hanging around. Anyways, found that there were some good prices available on some 4 TB NVME ; so bought two and a couple of enclosures for them. Honestly, I could be fine right now with a couple of such drives at 2TB, but when the 4 TB option is there for essentially the price of 2 TB, why not ?
I have tried three of these NVME external cases on PC and yes, the Orico M2V01-C4 left them all behind.

You mean to read the cards onto the drive? That requires more electronics, like the Gnarbox...
Do i need to get a thunderbolt cable to get these speeds or the type c cable included is sufficient?
I'd try it first, but if you're not getting the speeds you expect, then you may need to buy a cable that specifically guarentees 40gbit/s
Wait until the prices drop. I am running Ubuntu and OSX Catalina in a VM from an external SSD but looking to upgrade soon and this may be the route.

Glad you enjoyed it! You can achieve the same performance if you equip your PC with a Thunderbolt 3 port - you can buy them on expansion cards.
I bought an Oyen Digital Helix, because it’s a very compact drive that delivers essentially full 10Gbps throughput (over 900MB/sec) on USB 3/4 over 10Gbps USB-C ports, which is all the speed I need and works great with my Macs. Although sold as a complete ready-to-go external drive, two easy screws let you open it up and replace the NVMe SSD with a newer or higher capacity one later, which I plan to do as NVMe SSD prices fall. If I wanted 40Gbps, I would look at the Orico that Gordon tested here.
I think this is a better choice where you always have the choice to use which SSD to install...

Watching this video made me 5x as patient to copy my files 3x times slower😂
And, to copy or share with someone else means they'll need to have thunderbolt 3, also.
It's good to just disassemble your TB3 enclosure, and swap your NVMe 2280 to the protocol fastest for the machine you're copying to.
It really would be effing NICE if they'd make less expensive U.2 controllers ... I realize the exposed chips are fairly safe, but some will have components that can get wobbly ... and if someone's not competent at resoldering things after a while it's a bummer. Just my thoughts. Been doing it this way with
Sonnet Fusion TB2 + 2TB Evo 960 (in 2015). ~1500 MB R/W
Sonnet Fusion TB3 + 2TB Evo 970 (in 2017). ~1800 MB R/W
NetStor NA611TB3 TB3 (Dual - M.2 [NVMe]) ... (but required ext. AC). ~2700 MB R/W
Got 8x 500GB Samsung (T5 is it? ... red TB3..? off ebay for $80 ea... :)
Upgraded 2015 or older Retina / Air with the 500GBs in them for $200...
Upgraded the T5s --> 2TB 970 Evo. Got around 2200 (same as 2TB 970ish)
Upgraded the T5s --> 2TB 970 Evo+ Got around 2450
Upgraded the T5s --> 2TB 980 Evo. Got around 2700 (same as a plugged in NetStor !!)
Thus, the Samsung has THE! FASTEST!! Controller yet (esp. when you consider no ext. power).
The cheap $73 OWC (I think uses an x2 controller sold (even gave away) those asap).
The NA611TB3 controller = the Samsung T5.
Sonnet enclosure don't cool as well as they look (w all the AL surface area)... just overrated.
(though I'll emphasize it when I flea-bay them).
The Samsung T5 is by far the best I've found so far, and I basically was allowed to steal them at $83 delivered... got my buddy who owned DigiComp (Dave) to buy 2 ... he should've bought 10; I've sold all I'm willing to; I bought at least 8 (maybe 10) ... have 4 left and am keeping them).
I think the Orico enclosure I used also works over USB, so there's no need for the person you're sharing the drive with to have TB.

Have you tried copying 500MB video files or 500MB folders of raw images? I'm concerned about thermal throttling lowering speeds a lot or causing connection issues. Thanks Gordon. I'm planning to use an external SSD to host LR Classic catalog and photos, so I can work on the same files easily between my 2019 Mac Intel laptop and 2023 Mac M2 desktop. Do you think for the the speed of opening and editing files in Lightroom makes any difference between a 950 MB/s USB 3.2 Sandisk SSD versus a 2,700 MB/s Thunderbolt SSD?

Any thoughts on how to squeeze more storage out of these little enclosures without TOO much compromise on speeds? I'd love a 2 or 4 bay enclosure that could get me at least 8-16 TB of storage with near-nvme speeds. I know this is bordering on RAID levels lol but theoretically it seems possible? Why aren't there more options out there for this dreamy mobile storage solution?
Great video! One question, most tests comparing Sandisk and NVME drives only compare copying files. But is there any significant speed difference when photo/video editing from the external drives?
If you're loading files into a project or scrubbing through big files at high bit rates, there can be a difference, but a lot is also down to your processor's decoding performance. So I'd say less of a difference than plain benchmarks, but a difference none the less.
I ended up getting the transparent orico thunderbolt enclosure with the 980pro and the speeds are great. the heat is not. The design is dumb.since the heat sync in not placed completely over the drive. I foresee it being an issue.
Thanks Gordon, I recently bought a Samsung 1Tb T7 for use on my 2020 Macbook air and was getting speeds around 750Mbps... Quite disappointing. I started looking into the issue and came to the same conclusion that an external TB3 enclosure was the way to go, Especially as I have a 2Tb nvme drive hanging around ready for use from another project. I've sold the T7 already and will pick up something similar to yours soon as I'd like to edit with final cut directly from the drive. Great timing, cheers!
Oh and another thing, there seems to be an ORICO M2V02-C4 model too, which may or may not be a newer version..
Yes, there's lots of Orico models which can be a bit confusing! So long as it's TB3 (with USB4 too if you'd like USB compatibility) then you should be ok!
@@cameralabs agreed. I went through the specs of the above model and it’s hard to see ANY difference to your model other than the external design and name.
@@kjltube Orico seems to make good products. I have an enclosure with fan and LED temperature display. The SSD is a Samsung 970 2TB. The fan does come on during watching movies but is too quiet to be perceptible.

It is a little shocking to hear your speeds were equivalent to reading the entire first hard disk I ever owned - 38 times! - in one second, and you found it _quite disappointing_ …
The _register_ read speed of that computer was 8 MB/s, and another engineer in my house in college said it was “impressively fast”. Huh.

I used a Samsung, so can't speak about the sabrent, sorry. The enclosure should have a heatsink. You will need it.
Sabrent makes a $99 Thunderbolt 3 enclosure for NVME drives so you can save a whopping 50% getting that one. In other words you can be all in with 1TB 980 Pro SSD and enclosure for around the same price as just the enclosure in this video.

If you want to use these nvme m.2 cards for downloading and uploading on Android type c phones at high speed you need an Nvme that's max wattage is below 1.5a. The nvme cards that draw over 2.5a will definitely lose connection during large file transfer speaking from experience using Samsung note 10+. Maybe externally powered USBC hub will stop it pilling to much power form the phone.
How does the Orico used in this test compare to the Orico Model: ORICO TFM2T3-G40 which doesn’t have the heat sink grooves in the enclosure body, but seems to offer similar speeds. I ask because that is the model commonly available in Australia- I would have to international ship the one in this video.

It does get warm, as do all portable SSDs, when you use it constantly, but it never became an issue for my tasks. And yes, it will work with any MacBook from 2016

if speed isn't an issue, just buy a USB enclosure and the cheapest 8TB NVMe SSD you can find from a reputable brand!

@@fredericfirmenich7533 first start with the specs of the case you're going to use. My Orico case is designed for M.2 M-Key NVMe SSD drives, so any of those should work. But note other cases may use different drives.
I am very surprised to see this working successfully. I used this exact enclosure with a Sabrent Rocket 4Plus Advanced 2TB NVMe which is comparable in speed to the Samsung 980 Pro. I was using a Thunderbolt 4 cable. Like you’ve shown, it installs easily. It initialized and formatted. After about 4GB of copies it disconnected. Couldn’t get it back at all. I even exchanged both enclosure and SSD. The same exact process except this time I was able to copy about 100GB before it disconnected. I believe it may have overheated but both Orico and Sabrent have no answers or support for Mac. Returned both.
I saw your experience echoed in several of the Amazon reviews, too. Gives me pause before thinking this is great option for a Mac. However, Gordon's using a Mac so it doesn't quite make sense. Curious if Gordon has any perspective to share. Otherwise it's a phenomenal external option.
I have seen these problems encountered on Sabrent SSDs. Could it be just the Sabrent? Samsung is also known to run hot, but people don't report dead drives. Samsung makes all components in-house, while Sabrent came out as a bang for the buck performer, but maybe they have used some component that can't handle the heat when stressed.

Very very useful information Gordon, thank you for sharing. But as of today December 29, the enclosure is unavailable with no specified re stocking date on Amazon. I wrote Orico (Shenzhen, China) to inquire if it can be shipped directly from them to Canada. But i don't get my hopes up.
Yeah, they do seem to be selling out of various models in various regions. Thing is they also seem to do several models with slightly different codes that appear to do roughly the same thing, so it may be worth confirming on their site whether a different model has the same specs. The link I've provided to amazon still shows supply in the US, but not sure about Canada. Good luck!

I don't think there's much or any difference, you'd need to compare the specs on the Orico website. It might be a regional thing.

No I didn't, only my 2021 M1 and 2018 i5, but basically any model with Thunderbolt 3 will achieve a similar result, so any MacBook from 2016 onwards.
I always said that the best external drive (SSD and HDD) are DIYs, these solutions are more inexpensive and wider in options, and don't have the issues of preassembled propietary drives. The same thing applies to me with CFExpress cards, the best are DIYs using NVMe 2230 SSDs.
How can you build your own CFExpress-Card? Any Video on that?
Maybe 'best' from a cost perspective, but, certianly not best from a robustness, or weather sealing perspective.

Tbh time will tell that, this is a new thing and for me is not a big issue when the card normally is stored in safe places (bags or cameras).

I've been doing everything wirelessly now so I have not been keeping up on USB and firebolt speeds. This is pretty cool but I've gotten so used to the convenience of having my camera and phone uploading everything to my google drive I don't think I can go back to wired connection.
Convenience certainly wins many battles, especially backup! But if you're editing video and working on projects with >100GB of assets you need to transfer back and forth, wireless would slow you down.
Hi Gordon, great video. I'm running a Fledging enclosure with an Adata drive. My speeds are about 1200/2100 w/r and beginning to notice that my Fledging enclosure is sucking up battery as it has a fan to cool the drive.
I'm wondering it going fan less will throttle speeds when the drive gets hot. What are your experiences with throttling if any?
I didn't notice any throttling with mine, but my conditions aren't too warm either. These things certainly get hot when you're hammering them.

Have you checked if the problem is the cable? I have heard that 3.2 needs the right cable. I know people who got USB2-speeds over USB-C, when using the wrong cable. DPReview made a video recently on the topic.
Yes, I've explored that! The wrong cable can certainly slow down a drive BUT with a variety of cables, including the one with the Orico enclosure, the SanDisk SSD still only ran at 10gbit/s on my macbooks. It's because Apple doesn't use a chipset with support for USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. And I suspect that now USB 4 is becoming more common, you won't find 2x2 on many other new computers either.

I tried this on Oct 27, 2022 using the ACASIS TBU405. I connected the Apple TB2-TB3 adapter to the 2012 iMac (TB2 port) with a TB2 cable. I connected the TB3 end of the adapter to the Acasis enclosure with the NVME drive. The drive never appeared on the desktop, so I believe the Apple TB2-TB3 adapter does NOT pass power from the iMac TB2 port.
I have an externally powered TB3 device which works fine with the Apple Adapter and has an additional TB3 port for daisy chaining TB3 devices. (The Apple adapter does pass power when connected to a computer with a TB3 or TB4 port in order to use an external TB2 device) I connected the Acasis enclosure to that and it functions, but only has a transfer rate of about 600 mbps read and write, which is still about 6 times faster than the internal 3.5" HDD installed in the iMac2012. Next, I connected the Acasis enclosure to a USB port on the iMac 2012 and that resulted in about 400 mbps transfer rate.
For further comparison, Black Magic speed for read/write to the internal 3.5 HDD is about 100 mbps. Using a Thunderbolt2 external drive enclosure with an SATA SSD has read/write speeds in the 350 mbps range.

Have not really tested it out yet since I only have an M1 MBP from work. Plan to get an M1X MBP soon to verify the 40Gbps claim of the enclosure and the 7,000 MB/s (R) of the SSD. Will keep you posted. Thank you.
You should achieve similar speeds to me, so expect around 2500-3000MB/s.

What do you think of G-Drive new Armorlock external SSD where you can use your phone to lock and unlock it and share the drive with approved users and track last know location of the drive, is it useful or extra cost of gimmick?
Anything is worth it if it does what you want or need it to do. I wouldn't use those features as I work alone.

Hi Gordon. I've been building SSD drives for a while. Currently use a Wavlink UTE02 and Samsung 970 Eco Plus. Have you come across any significant differences in read and write speeds on the combination you've tried? With a Mac M1 16" - write 1200Gbps, read 2600Gbps. I may have to see if the 980 Pro makes a difference, or whether it's the enclosure! Thanks.
I'm afraid the combo I demoe'd is the only pairing I've tried BUT in one of the other comments here someone using a 970 also had slower write speeds than me. So if you can afford it, I'd consider trying the 980 in the same enclosure. Let me know what happens...

@@cameralabs My 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus has been replaced by a 980 Pro. It's resolved the write speed issues going from 1150MB/s to 2270MB/s, with the read speed being the same. Really appreciate the video and it's a pleasure to give you a kickback by using the link. I think I will, at some point, invest in a new enclosure but the gains are marginal. Still super happy with the M1 internal drive running at over 5500MB/s!

Can this setup be used for direct recording from newer mirrorless cameras? CFExpress cards are really expensive ...
Only if the camera itself supports external USB recording, which is sadly extremely rare. Generally only on some cinema cameras right now.

Thunderbolt 3 / 4 enclosures should work as I showed on any Mac in the last few years.
does anyone know if the ssd in the samsung extreme portables speeds is limited by its own housing? i got a 1tb and 2tb of the none pro version and i wonder if i crack it open and put it in the orico external case and get faster speeds than its orginal housing?
someone else was suggesting that too. There are definitely different speed SSDs out there but the faster ones are more expensive, so there would be no point putting a really quick one in a slow housing. So the insides of the SanDisk drive might be quicker than the housing allows - almost certainly in fact - but I suspect they may not match the speed of the Samsung part I put int the Orico here. But this is all speculation. You'd need to open it up and or identify the internals to really find out the spec of the memory.

It does get hot, but the case dissipates heat pretty well. I agree, the SanDisk can get hot

The reason for that question is that I recently was working on a corporate video that was almost an hour long video, and the Sandisk got so hot, that it crashed and I lost everything (I had a backup of the footage, but the work was gone). I use the latest M1 MAX 16Inch MacBook, but with only 1TB internal, I am forced to use external storage. FYI - You are one of the ONLY RUclipsrs that bother to reply to comments. @@danfarmer_photo I'm sorry to hear about your lost work and wish I could give you 100% reassurance on this one. I have edited projects directly from this DIY drive without a problem, but I can't guarantee there wouldn't be problems in the future. I generally use mine for transferring large amounts of data rather than working directly from them, so I don't stress them as hard as you might. Again though, the larger enclosure, metal case and bigger fins should keep it cooler than the SanDisk.

Yes, everything feels faster, although the biggest differences are when dealing with very big file transfers.

I'm struggling to find a drive that takes 8TB nvme -- many claim to only (officially) support up to 2 or 4tb. They probably physically fit an 8tb, but then face heat issues or something.
Yeah, maybe they're only designed to be used in a full motherboard where there's more chance of cooling. Cooler ones will come with future processes.

I made the mistake of buying the latest iteration of the SanDisk Extreme Pro 4TB SSD, advertised as 2000+MB/s read/write but only get around 700 Read/Write out of it due to the fact that it's not Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 compatible. If I were to get this enclosure and swap the drive out of the SanDisk enclosure and put it in this enclosure, would I get the full speed or is the bottleneck on the SSD itself and not the enclosure?
I suspect the SanDisk might be hard wired, so the drive may not be removeable, plus even if it was, it may not use the same connector inside as the Orico.

If you get it to work in a TB3 enclosure, then you will get the max possible bandwidth from it, but what that is in practice I can't say. You'd need to look up the specs for the actual drive inside and subtract some for real-life figures.
I want to directly connect an external SSD drive to my iPhone 14 Pro to backup photos & videos from PHOTOS & WhatsApp. How well the 1TB External SSD drives work connected to an iPhone? Which one would you recommend? After reading the 1-star reviews of Sandisk drives, I am hesitant to take the risk.
In theory they should all be fairly similar on a phone as you won't experience the extra speed of the better drives. The companies also often switch the drives inside, so a review of one might not be reflective of what they're selling now. I'd therefore go for a drive made by a drive manufacturer, like Samsung, and make sure it's compatible with your phone first.
