Couldn't agree with this more. I now own my own businesses but, honestly, my formative years were working in a supermarket in my early 20's. I was snobby of it at first (thought it was embarrassing) but started to make it my own by: Getting trained in all departments to get a varied experience, getting to work at the customer service desk (unbelieveable skills learned when you spend 8hrs dealing with pissed off people), putting a post-it of exam revision or Romanian words from the security guard on the check-out screen etc etc. I still use my hourly wage back then (£6.5) as a guideline for how far I've come since then.
No he's not saying to have bad standards as some think. But rather take advantage of the best opportunity you have next to you that you can get. Its about what you can do.

I started working in a grocery store at 14 years old as a stock clerk. 5 years forward, and I've worked myself up to a decent supervisor with a very comfortable pay, lots of leaderships trainings provided by the company and just a better understanding of myself, business, and people. Applying for a job here was probably the smartest thing I've done in my life.
I'm 26, need at least 1 year of customer service experience in order to apply for the jobs I want, so I'm currently working at Walmart (in Canada) as a greeter - and I love it! My coworkers (most) and managers really like me, and I like them! Heck, I might stay here...
I worked as a Greeter a Walmart in the US for three years straight. It was great at the time. I was 20 when I started and 23 when I left. My coworkers (most of them) were great and my management, supervisor, and superiors were great too. They appreciated my performances and even though I had quit back in 2019, whenever I visit my old store, they greet me happily, remember the hardwork I did, and told me if I ever needed a job again, they'd hire me again with no problem. The supervisor complimented how I was one of her best workers, and I took pride in that. I thank God I had a job to help me pay for community college, put gas in my car, food, pay the phone bill for me and my family, and gave me money to hang with friends. It was an opportunity indeed. I am studying for Pharmacy Technician, so this was a great way to prepare me and help me interact with customers.
I learned so much from my part-time jobs. If you apply yourself in them, the skills you gain in them can serve useful to you for the rest of your life.
I've worked 12 years in Retail and won't recommend it unless you enjoy low payment and at times a stressful environment, as you will have to undertake multiple tasks and requests simultaneously. On a positive note, it is a very active and social job with various tasks. Still wouldn't recommend it to anyone, only something that you work on the side while pursuing a career in school. There are much better opportunities out there so stay focused on a specific path that will truly fullfill you and make you a lot of money.
All work is moral. Retail and service jobs can be VERY hard. I have nothing but respect for people at McDonalds, garbage truck drivers, Walmart workers, and so-on. I always treat people with respect and kindness - and patience. My son worked in a restaurant for 5 years. The last two preparing to go to nursing school by taking classes and so-on. He's currently working as an LNA ( while in RN school ), and remarks that even a bad day as an nursing assistant is better than the best day at 5 Guys. His attitude and flexibility is much appreciated by the hospital and the patients.
You sound very old school like my grandfather, he was like that too. He worked in places like that too, retail and what not. Honestly idc where people work I just hope they do it with integrity! I actually miss retail. I do a lot of outdoor pursuits, especially cycling, so it was good for work/life balance by having some weeks in which i had days off during the week to myself and then spend time with friends at nights and weekends. I also liked that there were lots of different employees on different days and many of them were attractive females. Plus i liked seeing new faces everyday and interacting with the customers. Moved on to oil rigs and spent a large amount of time on what was basically a prison in the middle of the ocean surrounded by the same men and same conversation day in day out, but the pay was great. Then into an office which is has decent pay but long hours and still the same people each day. Find what suits your interests and pays enough to have some fun and travel.

And there are other jobs besides retail that are quick to hire anyone willing to work. A factory or warehouse job is more physically demanding than retail, but it's far less soul-crushing, and the opportunities for advancement are still there.

I have a couple high level degrees and worked hard to get the degrees along with all the certifications. However, the job changed and my belief system no longer fits. So, I chose to leave. Now, my plan is to seek out a lateral position that ascribes to the same world view that I have. Going to work with internal conflict every day was difficult. My politicial philosophy is congruent to JP's and I was working in education. Need I say more?
In my experience low iq bosses are the most nasty. They don't believe in workers rights and especially job descriptions. My brother owns a few takeaways and he works his staff to the bone, and below minimum wage. He feels like a lord over them, so he tells me! Its not about starting at the bottom like measuring jobs like on a ladder. You could get a job in retail and be lucky and have a boss who is idealistic and not into power games. High iq people tend not to be into power politics over petty things. In my experience again, its to do with iq, I am sure of it. I've known really stupid people in authority and they are super nasty. The intelligent people in authority are easy going. Even if you found a high flying job somewhere you will probably still have a sadist boss over you. Low iq people can still get into manager roles. A clerk disagreeing with the Manager's requests for you to do certain work is called "Insubordination." And yeah for that you can and will be fired! Also it's great if you have such progressive ideas but keep them to yourself unless asked for your input. No one likes a smart ass. We had a saying "Don't think above your pay scale." Meaning, Supervisors and Managers are paid to deal with the customers who are not happy with your customer service. Let them handle it. The gap? That is everywhere. There's A LOT of paperwork involved in running your own business. Ergo: Having a job is the best/only alternative for many people.

Standing for long hours is actually not that bad at least compare to walking for long hours
