I always felt the melodic middle section of this song was supposed to be part of hell and back or "hellbound" as we used to call it when Metallica were releasing short clips from death magnetic before it's release.
I was always amazed at how it was never released. When beyond magnetic came out, it was clear all the songs were sort of incomplete. Always felt "hellbound" should have been more of a creepy sounding ballad than what it ended up being.
This song is probably the most complete version from the release. It's all really good stuff, but none of the songs ever really seemed to be pieced together perfectly which is why I think it ended up being left off of death magnetic.
Either way, the riffs, solos, lyrics are all very cool. Glad we can hear them. James' voice from the justice era is really good over these lyrics and vocal pattern.
