Me too. I have most of their albums and still play them. They are timeless. Their music has everything from the driving bass to acoustic to the amazing keyboards. I saw them live in 1973 on their world tour promoting Close to the Edge. What you get on record is what you get on stage. This is the first time that I have heard Roundabout in close to 40 years. Back in the 1970s, Roundabout was so ubiquitous on FM radio that it became like background music. Now, hearing it again with fresh ears, I have a much greater appreciation for the sophistication of the composition and the arrangements. The interplay between the musicians, and especially the bass lines of Chris Squire that hold it all down, are superb. Thank you for reawakening my interest in this rock classic!

The Yes band is progressive rock (prog rock). These musicians are usually formally trained and well established in their understanding of music theory with appreciation of classical music such as Bach and Beethoven. Bands like Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Genesis, Dream Theater, and Kansas are all brilliant musicians who understand the depths of music theory and can transform that understanding into soulful creative compositions. It’s never sloppy or whimsical or just thrown together. It’s melodic and inviting and pleasant to the ear. It’s the exercise of a God given gift of creativity combined with the hard work of the study of their craft. The original Yes drummer, Alan White just passed away last week on May 26th 2022 at age 72.

The point was that they had an appreciation for music theory and I doubt that Rick Wakeman would be interested in playing with someone who didn’t have that appreciation or had no clue of the difference between Dorian and mixolydian.

I grew up listening to these guys, being fortunate enough to have seen them live over a dozen times. Their music is timeless, sounding as fresh and new as it did when this album was released. One characteristic of Yes, and other bands of this genre, that really sets them apart - they can play this live. They sound every bit as good live as they do on carefully mastered studio recordings. Far too many bands lack the real talent to do that, and disappoint when seen live. Not Yes. I'll miss seeing them, now that Chris is gone. I've had a 50 year run with them, though, and can still listen to their recordings. And still do.

How many bands are out there like this, you ask? Not many, but the music of the 1970s will send you on a journey of musical discovery that will reveal the banality of what passes for popular music played on the radio today. The music industry has been infected by marketers impersonating impresarios like Simon Cowell, Ryan Seacrest, and anyone else hosting television programs such as American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent and their ilk. I feel fortunate to have been a teenager during the 70s to listen to and experience live the artists and bands who wrote the canon of rock, R&B, soul, funk, prog rock, Southern blues, country rock and jazz fusion. I’m so grateful for Apple Music and other streaming services who can provide me with a library of uninterrupted non commercial auditory joy that enables me to avoid the mindless flatulence emanating from what is considered today’s popular artists. The reactions on your faces while listening to the first band I ever witnessed live in 1974 was utterly priceless. Be seeing you fellas again, for sure.

This album is mothers milk to me. Almost literally, since it was surely playing when I was on the teet. But that track is what I remember from my very young childhood. I remember lying in the dark with my head in my Dad’s armpit and listening. The glow of the display lamp from his turntable barely lighting the room. Being engrossed in the story. We moved from that house when I was three. My favorite song ever. Especially after recreating the scene with my two boys. We live decades for those moments.

Zay & Zel, your appreciation for YES's artistry makes me so happy!!! You mentioned that you'd been receiving a lot of requests for a YES reaction video. That's probably because two days before you premiered this video YES's long-time drummer, Alan White, passed away. Alan lived near me. I had the pleasure of speaking with him on many occasions about his appreciation for artists from many different musical genres. He was a big supporter of young musicians. I wish Alan could have seen your reaction video, he would have been absolutely tickled by your comments. Alan was one of the sweetest men I've ever known. I am comforted by the notion that Alan's spirit is enjoying a pint of Stella and collaborating with his best friend, YES bassist Chris Squire, who passed away in 2015.
As previous commenters noted, Alan was not YES's original drummer. He replaced Bill Bruford in July 1972 and it's Bill you hear playing on "Roundabout" (1971). YES is one of the greatest progressive rock bands of the 1970s. They enjoyed additional success in the 1980s with a more commercial & pop-oriented sound on their "90125" and "Big Generator" albums, which came out when I was a teenager. You seem to enjoy the YES sound, so I hope you gentlemen will give some of YES's other works a listen. You will not be disappointed, I promise.

  • @Lightmane

Yes went through MANY lineup changes.
    The original lineup was:
    Jon Anderson: Vocals
    Chris Squire: Bass
    Peter Banks: Guitar
    Tony Kaye: Keyboards
    Bill Bruford: Drums
For their 3rd album 'The Yes Album', Steve Howe replaced Peter Banks.
For their 4th album 'Fragile', which has 'Roundabout', Rick Wakeman replaced Tony Kaye
For their 6th album 'Tales from Topographic Oceans', Alan White replaced Bill Bruford
Rick Wakeman left after Tales and then returned for their 8th album. Tony Kaye returned in the 80's. Trevor Rabin replaced Steve Howe during this time.
They had a Union tour in the 80's consisting of 8 members: Anderson, Squire, Bruford, White, Rabin, Howe, Wakeman & Kaye. That tour was unreal.
There's more, but that's the jist of Yes and their many lineup changes. Anderson, White, Squire, Howe and Wakeman are probably the lineup that's best known... Probably : )
