Irene Sharaff also won Oscars for "An American in Paris"(1952), "The King and I"(1957), "Cleopatra"(1964), "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"(1967). It would have been wonderful to see her accept the Oscar.

All of Irene's wins were very well deserved, but I disagree with her win for West Side Story. That Oscar should have gone to either Flower Drum Song or Pocket Full of Miracles. There was nothing outstanding or particularly eye catching of her designs for WSS. By the way, and since you are such an admirer of movie costumes, my mother made several costumes for Travilla, they were very good friends before she returned to Cuba and married my father. The dress design that Jane Russell wore on the scene from Gentlemen Preferred Blondes when they were about to board the ocean liner was my mother's. As well as the black gown Russell wore on board ship that had the shimmering black mantilla draped on her head. She used to show me a lot of drawings and designs from her collaboration with Travilla, as well as from her own Atelier in NY. Mom was a very private person and had a great clientele. She was an amazing haute couturier and also a sartorial genius.

THAT's the La Dolce Vita costume they chose to showcase? Not Anita Ekberg's iconic black strapless "fountain" dress?

Nope she was constantly working working mainly on Broadway and in this case Rome toiling away on Cleopatra, never went to any of the Oscars. Shame she should have.
