I was a little confused at the start bc a 1l bottle of water here in Mexico costs about 8MXN (about 0.40 dollars), as for a bottle of 600 ml of coke cost 14MXN (about 0.70 dollars) so, yeah.
1L water bottle in India is ₹20 ($0.24) and 750ml coke is ₹40 ($0.49).

just stumbled across this since im the first time in america, originally from germany, and this is absurd to me.
In Germany you can get 1,5 litres of water for 0.25€, which equates to 0.28 dollars, the cheapest soda is around 0,60€. Also tap water quality is way better than in the US. Gonna appreciate this way more in the future :)

to be honest, I've never seen water that's more expensive than coke, whether it was at places where everything is overcharged (like at the cinemas), small local shops or bigger shopping malls
(the only exceptions are some fancy brands with glass bottles that are brought from some fancy place from another country)
or maybe it's because I don't live in the USA :|

Although pricing is most definitely a factor of what the market will bear, while shopping I checked those prices at some local stores and noted a few things that I just did a bit more research on. First, many sodas are made from “purified water”, which online research indicates can, and often does, come from recycled waste water sources. Similarly, some of the waters were purified waters. The sodas and waters made from purified water were mostly fairly close in price, while the spring waters and similar non-purified ones were .50 to $1.00 more on average.
I am sure what the market will bear plays well into this also, but personally, I’d much rather not drink purified waste water, whether soda or otherwise- and taste is just one reason. Sadly, the water in many towns and cities is in part based on purified waste water and similar sources, with bromine and chlorine added- hence, the big push for home water filtration. Unless you are lucky enough to live somewhere that does not need to do this, whether you pay for filters, health problems or bottled water will be your only real choice.
Recycled water, if it is purified correctly, is entirely safe and healthy to drink. When it comes out of the purification process (typically some kind of reverse osmosis), it should be chemically indistinguishable from distilled water. The product will then have trace minerals re-added to ensure it tastes "normal." Because of the water cycle, all water on Earth has likely passed through the digestive tracts of many animals in the past, so all water can be called "recycled" in some sense.
As for the chlorine, it has been shown to be highly effective at reducing the risk of water-borne infectious diseases. There are closed systems where it is not strictly necessary, but other disinfection measures may be costlier or carry greater risks when a water main is damaged or the water supply is otherwise contaminated (not everybody will become aware of a "boil water" warning immediately after it is issued, and some people may fail to comply). There are tradeoffs to be made in both directions, and it is not necessarily straightforward to decide which mode of purification is most appropriate for a given community.
Not to mention the pure spring water is usually just bottled in a remote location. Doesn't mean its actually just unfiltered water bottled straight out of some creek.
Purified water is also very useful for some cleaning, e.g. resolving clogged inkjet printheads.
All the water from your tap is purified waste water. That's what water purification does.
@@justinjakeashton -actually, not where we live, nor are even all source or methods used for purification the same. Some, like ours, is direct from glacial aquifers (like it was where I grew up in Greenlawn Long Island, NY until they had to add bromine and chlorine after too much growth caused issues.
In contrast, in some places they pull from seawater and use desalination, others pull from grey-water (or worse). Sadly, most purified waters in plastic bottles marked “Purified” is from many of the cheapest/worst sources.

You know how if you add water to a cup first and then add the soda it completely weakens the soda? Well my question is how do I make it so I can start drinking the soda separately first and drink water at the end?
bottled water does not come out of the tap. a bottle of water is different. well it depends. some bottled water comes from the same treatment facilities we get our tap from and if you have new pipes its basically the same but some actually take the extra step to up the quality of the product and that imo is why you'd pay for something like that over tap water. i personally was on that train a long time ago until i switched to tap water from bottled water for a year. after running some tests it seemed like my tap water was clean but i feel off from drinking it during all that time. i thought it was just something i needed to adjust too but it could be that our pipes are old or something else was contaminating it. on the other hand i have drank bottled water for a long period of time that contained no minerals and it dehydrated me and flushed me out more than tap water did.
