I remember the screaming trees “I nearly lost you” hit single debuting on mtv. And yeah Kurt is one of the best artists who ever lived. He was the Van Gogh of music, organically original.
I think this is the first time I heard that Mark Lanegan sent Greg Ginn Nirvana demos, and called him trying to get Nirvana signed to SST...fucking wild. Imagine
What would have happened is Greg ginn would have ripped Nirvana off and not paid them and ran them into the ground. Like he did every SST band. And i have an actual family member in an SST band so I know what I’m talking about..

Both Lanegan and Joseph are such humble guys, and i think these conversations gives a good context in it's self of just how true that is. Mark obviously have so many stories to tell, and thank god for this show with this good host that really can bring these stories out of Mark in a way most would not be able to even. That means alot to alot of people, including me!

Because they've got in spades the thing they can't begin to compete with, - experience and perseverance. And those are non replaceable qualities. Instead, I hung out and learned from those guys, - it's why I survived.Don't know how many people full of potential I saw crash and burn right out of the gate.You go off the beaten path, a lot of things can go wrong.
Wish more people around Nirvana/Kurt IE sonic youth , dinosaur jr, L7, babes in Toyland , Soundgarden Pearl Jam , tad etc.would give kurt a proper tribute or talk about him. Long overdue
What's incredible is that so many talented musicians came through the Seattle scene of the 80's and went on to wider exposure and (some ) success into the 90's. There were definitely standouts, they were Cornell, Staley, Cobain ,Wood , Vedder ,Lanegan and Carlson (he may not be a vocalist but he has a legacy of kickstarting modern heavy drone / minimalist rock and you could argue all by himself came out of the grunge scene with his own category of music and therefore is more of a visionary than the rest of the list put together? ) they were the most talented followed by , Arm, Enigk,Zapata, Doyle, Osbourne , Endino and Ballew.
Thank you for mentioning (Mia) Zapata.. very unfortunate what happened to her and she was a great singer and role model. Truly appreciate the acknowledgement that tends to go under the radar most of the time.

I don't get why he hates all of that old Trees stuff. One of my favorite records to listen to is their Anthology compilation. Those songs are classics to me. Maybe they weren't always recorded the best, but in a lot of ways that may be part of their charm. I mean come on- Invisible lantern, Transfiguration, In The Forest, awww shit- every one of those damn songs is great and was way underrated.

You should get mics that amplify the gross noises mouths make even more! I seriously HATE hearing saliva in men’s mouths. I used to deliberately skip these awesome interviews with jazz legends at my college because the interviewer was a burnt out old trumpeter whom always seems to have had disgustingly high concentrations of saliva clicking and shit into the expensive on stage microphone and the spit sounds were louder than his vowels therefore I got the fuck out and would only attend the clinics if it was someone like John Scofield
I c how SST didn't get it! The underground hardcore scene at the time was way better imo. I remember I actually wound up w/Sound Garden's Louder Than Love cassette n like, '89? & only song that caught my attention & even remember is Big Dumb Love(?). By the time Teen Spirit hit n late '91, 2 true harcore/punk fans, it was just "ok". Same when Metallica hit radio/MTV 4 1st time a few yrs b4-4 those who'd been n2 the underground 4 yrs, there were at least 10 bands off the top of ur head nobody'd ever heard of that u knew could wipe the floor w/ them! When I heard & saw all the hoopla bout Nirvana, I said 2 myself, if they're really any good, let's hear their 1st album 1st, & went & bought Bleach. School(?) was, & prob still is, my fave song of theirs, & that has hardly any lyrics at all! Was good, but nothing special. It just blew away normies who'd prob just been equally blown away by Metallica, thinking they were revolutionary, when they, themselves, would tell u they came from a long line of successors! RIP, BOYS!🙏🤘🤘🤘

Daniel Johnson Lee said Van wrote some long angry reaction to his book or something, but deleted it later. I didn’t get a chance to read it or see it. I can imagine the anger he probably feels. Lee seemed more sad about it to me. I was going to get his book, but like Lee, I don’t think I could handle what he has to say about the Trees.
Kurt shredded his voice with the style he had , the howls and really strained his vocal chords, I think if he had survived his voice would be shot by now. Nirvana were huge and had great success, but still I think Layne, Chris and eddie had the better singing voices
Anybody can mimic Kurt's voice easily.. don't get me wrong I love Kurt's voice but his voice can be copied or emulated very easily where as Layne Staley, I find hard to even imitate if I tried. No one's going to try to sound like Layne because his voice was one of a kind and thus any attempt from any artist to try and make music using Layne's voice would be a hard one to recreate. But not to make it a Layne vs Kurt or anything like that.. I absolutely admire the way Kurt sang and screamed his heart out.. a true legend with the rest of the guys (musicians) from Seattle at that time.
This is definitely out of left field but from being a junky for years my teeth rotted out my head similar to Mark's. The toothaches were unbearable. I can't imagine why he hasn't fixed them or did what I did and got em yanked. That shit has to hurt him.
I respect Kurt & Nirvana, but they couldn't gold a candle to AIC, SOUNDGARDEN, OR Mark & The Trees in terms of sheer musical talent... he was a clever pop songwriter & engaging frontman... but skills wise, not comparable to his contemporaries... that's how I see it
