For real! Do these kids know he invented the shout out I really cannot explain just how much that show really meant to us NYC kids. I hated when my bus was late, I needed time to get my snacks before it came on. Video Music Box was international, we sent our videos to our cousins in Canada and in London. They were in demand. It was a rite of passage for sure when I finally was able to get in the club, and get my shout out..

@@Msboochie2 I remember watching when I costed my family in Brooklyn which was summers and holidays. In Philly we had a show like this in the early 90s that lasted for at least 20 years called Urban Xpressions... it was just like this and I wonder if the creator knew or worked with Ralph McDaniels

This guy is how I learned everything about hip hop. I was born in ‘92 and didn’t have cable back in 2010. I remember watch channel 25 outta no where back in Jersey and I see these old school hip hop videos and that was the beginning of Video Music Box for me. Every Saturday had an episode telling the history of hip hop by the years from 83-97. I wouldn’t know all the classic albums and songs I know today if it wasn’t for him.

Born in 1992,hell Rap City(The Rap City with the purple & yellow video font)/The Joe Clair-Big Lez-Chris Thomas-Prince Dijour Era was the only 2hr block of TV dedicated to Hip Hop outside of Video Music Box! I was born in 1979 and actually lived through The Golden Era of Hip Hop...Rap City and Video Vibrations played some of the Videos that Uncle Ralph directed...MTV didn't. MTV did the "Get that one black guy that was in that new Blondie 'Rapture' video" and that one token of appreciation was Fab 5 Freddy, not even truly who and what Fab 5 represented and meant to Hip Hop.

@@jaycavalli600 Born in 95, I always felt the same way thinking “how don’t people my age and a little older know more?” My man put it in perspective though, I was raised in BK and my parents raised me on hip hop content, he didn’t have that cause his mom was religious, so he had to go back and do his homework.
I also saw a tweet the other day that said “I don’t be knowing this hip hop history y’all be talking about, my parents played Fred Hammond in the house” and mad people respond saying similar things. Either they were raised on gospel or their parents were born in the 50s-60s, as opposed to the 70s like mine, and raised them on soul music and early r&b.

Ralph McDaniels if you check these comments, Thank YOU. My love for Hip Hop and filmmaking came straight from VMB. I was just a young Ados kid living with his divorced Mom in uptown doing my best to stay out of trouble. Then I did a music video show in college mimicking VMB. Now, Im in LA, doing music videos and short films, and Im about to do my first feature film. I was intrigued with behind the scenes jobs not talent. Unfortunately, today, most people are about being in front of the camera. I learned editing, writing, producing because of your show. 🙏🏿Thank You my brother!

This is why Black ownership is so important. He shouldn't have had to ask MTV to air his show. Which they didn't and created their own rap show. BET should have done it and cornered the market on hip hop video shows. At the time BET was Black owned. His documentary should be on TV One vs Showtime. Black people need to own every aspect of hip hop culture, upstream and downstream and sideways. Every other culture does this but us.

Someone tweeted the other day “I don’t know none of the hip hop history y’all be talking about. My parents were born in the 50s and played Fred Hammond in the house.” And people had similar responses saying their parents played soul, smooth jazz, gospel, or old school r&b around them. I’m always so happy to know a little thing or two about hip hop because that’s what I was raised on from the 90s/early 2000s on. I heard the name “Uncle Ralph” growing up. It’s funny I remember “discovering” Video Music Box on my tv (didn’t have cable in my room, only the living room) around like 2004. And I was hype to be able to see music videos, because normally I would only be able to see them on BET etc in my living room. Anyway, my father realized one day that Video Music Box was still coming on and told me how he used to watch it growing up. My family even knows Ray Dijon, so it was funny meeting him after seeing him on tv, but everybody in Brooklyn know Ray Dijon lol.

I remember watching Video Music Box after school in the 90's and being amazed seeing music videos and cut scenes from the clubs down to interviews that we didn't see anywhere else. It truly connected us closer to the culture from our homes as kids. What's even more amazing is that it continues to air every Saturday evening at midnight on NYCTV channel 25 and it's still consistent with putting out great shows you wish were longer. I wanna give a shout out to Uncle Ralph! Much respects!
