    OLD IRONSIDES POEM
    Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!
    Long has it waved on high,
    And many an eye has danced to see
    That banner in the sky;
    Beneath it rung the battle shout,
    And burst the cannon’s roar;-
    The meteor of the ocean air
    Shall sweep the clouds no more!
    Her deck, once red with heroes’ blood
    Where knelt the vanquished foe,
    When winds were hurrying o’er the flood
    And waves were white below,
    No more shall feel the victor’s tread,
    Or know the conquered knee;-
    The harpies of the shore shall pluck
    The eagle of the sea!
    O, better that her shattered hulk
    Should sink beneath the wave;
    Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
    And there should be her grave;
    Nail to the mast her holy flag,
    Set every thread-bare sail,
    And give her to the god of storms,-
    The lightning and the gale!

    And to think, there were members of Congress who wanted to scrap her and turn her into firewood at one time, there was actually quite a political battle to keep her preserved. At least we did, unlike our war of 1812 foes who sent the single most decorated ship, of their entire navies half of a mellinia of history, to the breakers. Funny though, she wouldn't go, she kept slipping her tow lines and finally slipped it one last time and was driven so hard aground that she could be pulled off. They ended up scrapping her in place as best they could then let her be. If you wondering, I am referring to HMS Warspite.

      Well, she is still sailing, second oldest warship afloat. Pretty good feat in my book. The oldest is the HMS Victory. But the Victory has been in dock since 1922 sooo. It was never defeated (kind of obvious though), sunk I think 5 ships? Maybe 6. Not many ships ever can boast that. Maybe Ships of the line but not frigates, especially those with 44 guns. Not to mention the crew was one of, if not the most elite crew in the U.S. Navy throughout it's service. And the fact that is is the oldest COMMISSIONED warship in the world. And the only ship in the U.S. Navy to have sunk an enemy ship besides aircraft carriers. Because its actually the planes. It is a piece of American history that we are proud to still have around. Sorry we don't have any billion year old castles for you to visit.

      She IS the oldest warship afloat. If they British ever put the Victory back in the water they could take the honor back but as it has been almost 100 years since her hull touched the ocean it is kinda of hard to say she is afloat. It is also kind of hard to say she is commissioned as a naval vessel if you ask me. The HMS Victory is a truly remarkable ship and I would love to see her back in the water.

    • @wjsnow2195
      @wjsnow2195 5 лет назад +2

      The Victory is neither afloat nor was it continuously commissioned. It’s been decommissioned at least once and hasn’t touched water for longer than most of us have been alive. The British recommissioned it to say they have the oldest commissioned ship in the world, but that would be like the US bringing the Wright flyer into the USAF to claim we have the oldest military aircraft.
