Hi, yes you can use stem, cutting and root it in water. Just put the cut stem directly in water and you will see roots emerging after a week. After three weeks you can have well grown roots. Change water regularly. You can use a little compost in your rooting medium for hardwood and semi-hardwood stems cuttings during rooting period. I am not using because I am having rooting success without compost so I just leave it at that.
i hv a question..once the croton has rooted and you change to bigger pot, do you still keep in shade for few days or put under direct sunlight that same day?
Hey! Can this be performed on thin leaved Gold Dust Croton? And the one we have is planted in ground, which is nearly 10 feet tall and very old, the branches are quiet thick, so will it work then?
Hi, this method can be used for all varieties of croton plant. However, for thick branches it is not recommended to do stem cutting propagation. The chances for thick branch hardwood to root is very very low. Stem cutting is best done with softwood cuttings or semi softwood cuttings. For thick hard woods, it is best to use air layering method.
did you put any chemicals/hormones in the soil or is it any special soil means (mixed with good manure etc.) or normal garden soil? and this is a really awesome video
Hi. I didn't use any rooting hormone/chemical for propagating this plant. In fact, I am not using rooting hormones or chemicals in any of my propagations. I propagate in normal gardening soil without any manure or fertilizer.
New cuttings for propagations are always put in shade, once they have rooted well, can be changed into bigger polybags or pots and placed under direct sunlight.
@@PlantZone thnx for reply.. actualy i have this plant and its very bushy... and i have extra small empty pot so want to add this plant cutting on it.....so can i put this plant cutting in to where their is no sunlight...??

Best is outdoor. Croton is an outdoor plant native to Malaysia. However, you can grow croton indoor if that area can get plenty of light. Some hybrid crotons from Thailand does not tolerate direct sunlight. They get leaf burns. So hybrids from Thailand's are best in shade and they can do better indoor as well, but ensure the area is very bright and get plenty of indirect sunlight.
@@lakhveerkaur8353 Yes. You can also let the plant under direct sunlight the entire day if your climate is similar to tropical countries. Except those from Thailand, they cannot get direct sunlight.
@@shonashelar78 Keep on changing the top layer of the soil atleast every once in a year. Understandably if the pots are huge, one can't change the soil every now and then . (Y)

This is Superb !! I shall also do the same, have huge plants as of now. Very informative, truly. Now I can gift so many of them to my friends :)
Glad this video helped. Yes, its a great idea to propagate and share plants with friends and neighbours.
Wow.......I never knew this type of cutting can have roots growing..very informative.👍
Yes. Croton is one of the easiest plant we can propagate using stem cutting.

Love the Gold Dust croton..can it take Full Sun or needs shade
Tam gölge de iyi büyüyor, Güneş yapraklarını yakıyor
It can grow in full sun, just ensure it has enough of moisture in the soil.
Can we grow this in water too with same stem abrasion technique which u shown to us?
And why don't you put any compost during rooting period?👍

Why can’t you use fertilised soiled.
Using fertilizer soil can actually slow down the rooting process or it can burn the cuttings. You can add fertilizer lightly after it has roots.
How long did it take to grow that much root
1 month
Which season we grow?
You can propagate this anytime of the year if you are in tropical climate zone. If you have winter, early spring will be ideal.
U put in sunlight or shade...??

If croton gets morning sunlight from 8.30 am to 11.30 am....is it okay ...if I keep outside
Can I propagate now....in June end

You can propagate croton anytime of the year as long as you are not in zone that have winter. Where is your current location?
Your croton leaves become yellow, is it ok? Actually my croton leaves are yellowing just like u, I thought it has some problem, plz reply
So far it's doing fine. I think it's because I am keeping it under direct sunlight. If you move it to shade the colour will change to more green.
@@PlantZone Thank you Plant Zone from your prompt reply. I also think so, I have kept my plant for 2 hours of direct sunlight.

Will this work with water?
Yes, you can propagate croton cutting in water too.

Sorry 🙏. I don't understand. Please type in English.
@@PlantZone will it need sun after we put it in water?
If you propagate in using soil or water, keep it under shade but bright area.

Will it works,?
Hi Yuvan, yes it works. That's how propagate my croton plants.
What is the soil mix? My soil is almost 15years old & has become clay like...my plant is dying..with dropping leaves
This plant can grow in any soil but the soil cannot be hard or kept soggy. It has to be loose and well draining. A little moist is ok.
There is nothing like 15 years old soil
@@ashutoshsingh5564 😂 I mean the same soil has been in the pot since last 15 yrs..! Bhavanaon ko smjho😂

I have tried lot of times to propagate my croton plant but failed. How often should water this cutting.
Make sure to use unfertilised soil. Water once a day, to keep the soil moist.
its plant grow in maharashtra
That's nice.
