    I envy you your very lowly patience. Many people he paints, but very few are able to so deeply invest into the subject. And such art has the right depth. For me, it is always a clear sensitive depth! I wish you health and other such projects and pleasantly spent. Also, but very rarely I painted, but I miss the patience necessary for quality details. Without them the images usually something missing. Well, Good luck :-)).

    How would you go about removing the two year old varnish from a oil painting?

    • @alankingwell
      @alankingwell  4 года назад

      Larry
      Hi Larry .
      You can take off old picture varnish with white spirit .
      I must say I have not done this myself though , I would imagine it was a messy process depending on how thick the layer of old varnish is .

    • @MAC-ws8fz
      @MAC-ws8fz 4 года назад

      @@alankingwell Thanks! White Spirits, I believe, up here in the frozen tundra of Southern California is known as turpentine, right? Smelly stuff so I use Turpinoid that doesn't smell. I'll try that and see how it goes!

    You, sir, are the absolute master of the seascape. Brilliant! If you don't mind me asking, how much time did you wait between day 2 and day 3? I would think with you adding a thin layer of white mixed with liquin the day 2 paint would have to be quite dry to avoid the next layer on top from cracking.
    Thanks for the video and congrats on all the views.

    I am new to oil painting and have done a painting that I dislike and want to paint over it. If I start again how does it work with the fat over lean rule? Can I just use neat paint or do I have to use oil with the paint now I'm starting again? Thanks.

    • @alankingwell
      @alankingwell  8 лет назад +1

      The Craft Cuckoo It will be fine to paint over the painting as long as you don't use white spirit or turpentine to thin the paint .
      It would be like coming back to a painting that you last worked on previously .
      I have many paintings that I started years ago that need to be finished so as long as they are wiped clean again it will be fine .
      And I would use a medium to thin the paint the if needed. Hope this helped ;0)

    Question - Have the paintings you paint been varnished? Does gesso take care of that? Great work, loved the video and thank you!

    • @alankingwell
      @alankingwell  8 лет назад +2

      Hi Leah, Thank you for your message . No the painting that I painted over had not been varnished , so really it was just like painting another stage to a picture.
      The gesso is only applied on the panel or canvas as a primer and cannot be painted on to oil paint as it is water based and will peel off.;0) Hope this makes sense

    • @alankingwell
      @alankingwell  9 лет назад +1

      +Marinero69 Thank you for your message.
      Sometimes i leave a painting for years before doing anything else to it.
      If you paint the area where you want to add the foam again with a very thin layer of paint (it must be a thin layer ) then you can paint the foam on top of that.
      Or the other way is to apply a thin layer of Liquin to the painting then paint on top of that . This will be like working wet on wet but you will not pick up any colour.Hope that helps

    I routinely make new paintings over old ones. I visit thrift stores for framed paintings. Often I can buy one for $10-15. And these are generally pretty large pieces. I simply unframe them. gesso the old painting and have myself a "brand new" canvas on which to work. What could have cost me $75 to 100 bucks for just a canvas alone I have a "brand new" canvas as well as a frame. Overpainting is simple and damned cost saving! Common sense and not some You Tube video taught me that!

      I'm new to oil paint but is there any real difference in quality of canvas because I just get mine cheap from ross and gesso them myself. Because I am starting out and don't need anything crazy. I'm not asking to splerg on the good stuff, just out of curiosity. Are random and found canvases good after a home gesso or is there something I should watch for when cheaply sourcing a canvas.
