Other songwriter: i cheated
Taylor Swift: my pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand, taking mine but it’s been promised to another
WHEN I TELL YOU I CACKLED
One of my most favourite lyrics of hers....
Can someone please explain it please? Like I get the overall message but can someone please go in deeper
i love thid lyrics
I think simply “I cheated” takes the wonder out the way she put it tells us she doesn’t love her fiancé and she knows the consequences but she loves the man she has so little time with and it pains her henceforth “my pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand”
The background of this lyric video is exactly what I imagine when I listen to this song
Exactly. It set up the mood perfectly.

How did she manage to make this dark infidelity story sound so pure, innocent and heartwarming. I literally can feel the desperateness of this character. Sadly she found the real love not in her husbands arms but a strangers and she just couldn't help it. The heart wants what it wants.
I feel it's more in old times, where people got promised to another by their parents. And not for love. Seems more like this to me. And they're not married yet. So I feel like the lyrical self tbh is kind of innocent. Just tough luck living in these times.

Def one of her best written songs, the imagery is stunning and the lyrics are beautiful. It almost has a Fleetwood Mac sound to it.
"You started it" is a childhood saying we used when defending our actions during a confrontation. It's not used anymore as adults, but in this song it conjures feelings that have been suppressed for years.

Ohhhh, this was so poetic!!! haha i was cheated 🥲, but i like a lot this song.
I recently found out in ancient Greece, newly wed couples could be gifted ivy plants as a symbol for everlasting love and fidelity to each other, thus the ivy plant symbolizes fidelity and everlasting love. Not only is she saying that her love for this other person is strong enough to break down her walls and potential marriage, and that this lover keeps sticking with her, but she'll only ever love and be loyal to this other person :')
Just imagine 20 years later she moves next door to her first love but doesn't know it cause its20years later and everyone looks different now . I'd guess it was Pennsylvania I'd meet you wherethespirit.eets the bones. He still doesn't know he jist let's hersitby the creek in the hedge and and watch hoping she sees what he really is
I'd be willing to bet that's his yard and it's his Easter egg from her
what strikes me the most is that she refers to a gravestone ( "the old widow goes to the stone") and she lives in a 'house of stone'...her house is essentially made of the same material a gravestone is made of. suggesting that she is confined in a sort of metaphorical death...i just did an in-depth literary analysis of this song on my channel and imo that really is what her existence must feel like...entrapment.
taylor really said let's write a novel and make everyone cry omgg
It reminded me of the gravestone from safe and sound sjfjgj
That`s why it really fit with Emily Dickinson`s life but with Sue`s POV
@@shairabacar451 I was gonna say this. Emily Dickinson, by the end of her life, wouldn't leaver her bedroom. Ivy is clearly based on Emily and Sue's relationship. I believe that the album is very Emily Dickinson: Taylor announced the album on the day of ED's birthday, and the title of the album is from the poem One Sister have I in our house.
@@MarcelleLeiturasPreguicosas why wouldn't she leave her bedroom cause I saw that in the finale of dickinson but was confused
"Where the spirit meets the bones" can be interpreted to mean a graveyard, plus the line "grieving for the living", so this analogy would make sense.

Im amazed how Taylor Swift makes songs about cheating sound so vulnerable, raw, and humane.
because it is, you can completely fall for someone else even though you are taken, and it can be life changing

I don’t think this song is a continuation of illicit affairs; illicit affairs was about an affair that was toxic and regretted, while Ivy feels like it’s about actual love that’s being held back because of a betrothal put in place. I also think Ivy takes place in medieval times or something, and that illicit affairs takes time in modern times
I agree even though I don't like cheating this is my favourite song from this album. Damn the melody is so... Magical.
YES AGREED, the singer in Ivy is in another time, another mental place.... illicit affairs is very modern. Ivy reminds me of what Taylor said about Evermore being a pioneer woman’s dream... something like that
maybe because she mentions parking lots in illicit affairs and she mentions house of stone here? also the vibe of illicit affairs is just sooo painful, and this song has such a calm vibe for such a chaotic theme
Agreed!!
I also think Ivy is not sister of Illicit because this feels like she was widow and someone just came into her life. And from cold to being warmed by the embrace of the Man she just meet.
“Your touch brought forth an incandescent glow. Tarnished but so grand” is such a beautiful lyric, i can’t say it enough.
What does it meant?

the way her background vocal fits her voice in 3:30-3:33 is astonishing and beautifully at the same time
My favorite lyric is "he wants what's only yours", because that line is usually referring to the husband having what the other man wants. But this idea makes it seem like law doesn't have as much pull as emotional experience. Thus couple may be married by law, but he's the "other man", to her, who's started a riveting relationship with a person that she feels is the one that truly loves her and therfore she belongs to.

Yes to everything everyone’s said about the lyrical genius of this song, and I just have to add the way she writes the lyrics to the musical phrasing to further tell the story. For example: “Oh, I can’t” [breath that makes you think that’s the end of the sentence] “stop you putting roots in my dreamland” - meaning instantly changes and an entire struggle gets packed into one phrase.
