My dad worked on these during his time in the west German army! It always amazed me that this was an actual weapon put in service, which lobbed a nuclear warhead just over 30km… it’s like pissing with limited range, end up hitting your own toes😄
Pretty accurate video, except for the beautiful sunny day. I remember those 10 degree days with two feet of snow at our detachment. Or slogging around in the mud if above freezing. And it was a slow process in training with reading each step and being checked afterwards. But, for sure, there were worse places to be at that time.
Commander:We need air support now!!!! Launch the honest john rocket immediately. Troops:Yes Sir,Honest John Is Now Assembling. Later Commander:Dammit Soldiers It's Been half an hour Where is the air support. Troops:Sir!Still Assembling
@@kathleenscott4792 I was FDC in Germany1966-68. We fired the HJ in Graf about 3 each year. Manual computation of firing data took about 6 or 7 minutes and had to be confirmed by all 6 computing the same answer.
I saw one of these rockets on the back of a truck at the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Oklahoma City. Reminded me of a primitive version of the SCUD missile made notorious by its use with the Iraqi Army in Desert Storm.
and the first rocket for it the MGR-1A only went 15 miles for max range, which would put you just a bit outside the range of the 20kt yield nuclear warhead by around 5ish miles lol. Better hope the wind doesn't quickly change after that bad boy is fired. We also has a Cluster munition warhead for it as well, which delivered 356 bomblets of around 1.3lb of Sarin (GB) in each bomblet. We really excelled in ways to mass murder in the 50's and 60's lol
@@Unkemp7 I was in an HJ unit in Germany. I don`t think it was practical to use any warhead other than nuclear. We had Nukes with 3 different yields (black, ebony and coral).

Bought the Estes model rocket from a hobby shop last week. The Estes picture has the rocket painted red white and black but the real rocket was greenish from what I can tell in this old video. Anyways in my opinion for the model the Estes colors look better but isn’t accurate to what the original color was
Estes has offered that model for years, I built it when I was kid. Here's a video of that model rocket launched. ruclips.net/video/Jdk6upJI_1Y/видео.html
we’re these all nuclear or were there conventional warheads in the stockpile too? I love watching these field artillery rocket videos. Basically the original MLRS except it’s one massive rocket
It says in the video the rocket can have either a conventional or nuclear payload. Plus that looked like a conventional explosion at the end, not a nuke.

One of the coolest missile systems ever developed by the US.
DAMN. That is the coolest US ARMY MAN video there ever could be!!!
yup as I watched this it reminded me of when I played with the little plastic green Army soldiers haha it felt a bit nostalgic

I worked on them in Korea 1969. we had the nukes. did test firings along the DMZ to show the North we had the goods. Some wild times.
Thank you for your service.
From S.Korea
camp page, korea 1974-5, hqs battery 1/142nd, 3rd missile command. those things didn't go whoosh, they went BOOM then disappeared!
Worked with them at ft. Benning in 1960

I was looking for the comedian but can't turn down a war documentary
Somehow they got the Honest John wrong in the 1965 docudrama “The War Game”.

Could not have been a convenient platform. Looks like it would take at least 20 minutes to prepare.

Not clear what the advantage of an unguided rocket is versus a cannon.
Allows you to lob a large warhead without needing a heavy gun.
